At this stage it is probably worth remembering that Carla didn't inform anyone; that was an assumption that Billie made in ignorance. Actually, this strip shows that it was Rachel Jackson.

Anyway, as you think that this was handled badly and that Carla is wrong to have considered this a good outcome, I'd be very interested to know how you would have handled the fact that Ruth had locked herself in her room and had become totally uncommunicative for at least a day.

Not blaring Ruth's mental illness and her relationship for everyone to hear, would have been a good start. Impressing upon Billie how bad the situation had become and let her address it also would have been good. Not saying Carla should be condemned for her action, just that her chosen method was ham-fisted and potentially self-defeating. Carla not only outed Ruth's sexuality, she outed her mental illness. Both of those are huge violations.

By not picking Billie up forcibly and literally dragging the conversation out into the hallway. That's when Carla made the whole situation public knowledge and made sure it could no longer be dealt with quietly. If she has kept the conversation in Billie and Sal's room, the whole firing could have been avoided.

I'm of two minds on this.

Yes, Carla's methods guaranteed that both Billie and Ruth were outed to the entire hall in at least three ways, and that's bad. And, although Carla didn't know, it potentially puts Ruth in a worse situation in the long run.

The counterpoint is that, had Carla not dragged it into the public eye... Mary's psychological torture would have still held power (and Carla was very much a target of that as well, remember), and Billie and Ruth would have continued their suicide pact without professional help. And, should that have been allowed to fester?

A third option would've been to go directly to the RM or to call 911, but that still would have risked Ruth getting fired. It at least may have kept Billie and Ruth from being outed as much as they were though...

The counterpoint is not a guarantee. There are ways she could have addressed the situation quietly while still encouraging professional help. Letting Billie know how bad it was and letting her make the decision on how to deal with it would have been better. It's not an either/or situation.

Even if Billie did not want or feel it was needed to help, dragging the situation into public was not the right answer. It really only made things worse. Mary is mostly a non-issue as she has been defanged by Carla and Ruth personally, and her threats to expose Billie and Ruth really won't work because they are no longer living together and it would come down to her word against Ruth's.  Mary's damage  had already been done. Events afterwards were just her trying to hold onto what little power she thought she had.

If Carla really thought Ruth was a danger to herself and Billie refused to help on her own, then the next step should have been going to the Resident Manager privately. Carla could say she stopped in to talk to Ruth, and something serious was wrong, that she said she wanted to die. No mention needed to be made at all about Billie or their relationship. Ruth would have been checked in on and likely would have still been made to get help. But she may have not lost her job. At the very least it would not have happened right away and arrangements could have been made once Ruth was out of immediate danger. Billie wouldn't have been forced to get the help she needs, but that can be dealt with separately.

Carla paniced I think, and Carla being Carla simply acted in what she thought was the best way to deal with it without thinking things through

We tend to do things like that when we're in a state of panic - it's simply human nature, and I don't think Carla could think much beyond the thought of doing SOMETHING when faced with a situation she couldn't comprehend or 'Deal' with normally.

I'm sure she does but when you don't make the best choices when you panic. Once she had the lightbulb moment about how deep Ruth was into depression, Carla wanted to act and help now, but she acted faster than she thought.

Carla also seems to have been fortunate enough to have a supporting home life, so she might not have considered that Ruth's home environment wasn't like hers. Carla might have also fell into the trap of thinking homophobia isn't much of a thing anymore so didn't see the parallel with her situation.

Just a random thought that occurred to me. Has anyone here seen the James Garner comedy westerns Support Your Local Sheriff and Support Your Local Gunfighter? At the end of both films, Jack Elam delivers hilarious monologues about what happens to the various characters after the end of the film. It's also been done in a few other films and TV shows too.

I just find myself wanting Willis to end Dumbing of Age at the end of Joyce's Freshman Year with some big incident (maybe Jocelyn coming out). There is something of an uproar and, as people shout to be heard, someone... maybe Mike... wanders away from the crowds, breaks the Fourth Wall and telling the readers over a few strips the destinies of the various characters. "Now how this story ends is like this..."

I have my own ideas but I'd be fascinated to learn what other forumites would like to hear him say.

I think that Sarah has problems; not as serious as Ruth's or even Billie's but she has problems and this continual and near-reflexive blurting out of downbeat assessments or accusing barbs is a symptom.

Today we are reminded that Sarah has serious problems of her own and, right now, being mean is probably the only thing that stops her having a total breakdown.

It does seem to be Joyce fate to be the catalyst to others' realisations of this sort, doesn't it?

She's mute, but not deaf. It's been mentioned a couple times in the comic (such as when Malaya made a fool of herself when she didn't realize Marcie wasn't deaf).

No, Marcie isn't deaf.  It's been implied in the comic that she experienced some kind of trauma when she was younger and can't/doesn't talk.

My predictions for this scene are:

1) The reinforcements Marcie summoned in panel 1 are going to arrive just as Sal and Amazi-Girl are laying into each-other (probably only verbally but it is very likely to get physical soon);

2) Because neither of them will 'keep it down' they get ejected from the venue;

3) The two end up, shellshocked and feeling both persecuted and hard-done-by, sitting on a wall or possibly the edge of the fountain. Having nothing else to do, they compare hard-luck stories, both trying to out-victim the other;

4(a) Amazi-Girl is horrified at just what a messed-up life leads to a 14-year-old being a petty criminal; she is even more horrified that the convenience store robbery was such an insignificant moment for Sal that she barely remembers it (and usually only when her wound starts aching);

4(b) Sal is horrified at just how significant the event was for Amazi-Girl and has a hard time coping with the realisation that such a minor event for her had such dire mental health consequences for someone else.

You see, Sal did the wrong thing in escalating. The cool thing to do was to suddenly include Amazi-Girl in the conversation, talking over her shoulder at her without directly looking at her to make it clear that her 'invisibility' thing isn't working. It would leave being the trouble-maker to Amazi-girl rather than, in front of dozens of people, being the one making the first violent act.

Today's final panel in today's strip (8/30) is... odd. Trying to guess what Amazi-Girl will do next is difficult; I'm not even sure if she knows herself. I honestly think that there is a chance that she may just walk away rather than fight Sal on her adversary's terms.

My guess is that she's going to do what Sal did during their first altercation. She's going to walk away rather than give Sal the satisfaction.

In some ways it give Amazi-Girl an 'out' from handling the fact that she doesn't want to be the weapon of anyone's lynch mob and probably having to end up fighting to protect Sal from the Party Faithful.

(click to show/hide)

Either way, I can see her and Sal having to fight their way out of there side-by-side and ending up sitting on a rooftop together somewhere (after having first dangled a hog-tied Ryan from a lamp-post for the police with a note pinned to his shirt reading 'rapist') having a very, very awkward conversation.

The gift Joyce left streaked across his face for the rest of his life is proof positive, IMO.

I mean are we sure he's there? Maybe Amazi-Girl is just seeing her biggest failure. Joyce has imagined him before and he was tagged then.

I at least find no small amount of satisfaction in seeing that the scar remains. A few more would be nice.

No, this is actually him. When Joyce imagined him, she imagined him as she remembered him: with the cut on his face still bleeding. This one has had some time for the scar to partially heal. Just in time for some new ones.
