Wait, does that mean that the next strip will be at the very least tomorrow? What a strangely placed time-jump. I almost wonder if it was done by accident, if this was posted a week or two early.

It becomes "tomorrow" tomorrow, which basically just means it's midnight in-comic. Which makes sense because of what time the midnight rally is at.

Oh right. Not sure at all what to take from today's except...apparently Marcie went to high school with Walky? Also whose dream is this?

I think that this is just the first step. We're learning Sal and Marcie's shared history and why it is that, firstly, Marcie ends up speech-impaired, secondly, why Sal feels so protective towards her and, finally, why Sal hates authority so much.

If there's one thing I learned unequivocally at school it is that dealing with bullying is far too difficult a chore for most teachers to bother with. It's simpler to urge the victim to 'fight back' or 'ignore it' and, if it carries too long, refer them to a child psychologist for being a victim (you can tell that I'm still bitter about this nearly three decades later, can't you?).

I've got a feeling that this 'Leyland' creep is probably going to turn out to have a social shield too and that the Walkerton parents will support him and penalise Sal for embarrassing them by directing an accusation at a member of a socially prominent family.

I'm guessing this is a Sal flashback, if anyone's specific flashback.

I think this is earlier than high school. Sal was in the boarding school for "most of her teens" and was sent after the convenience store stuff. At first glance they looked more like children than teens to me in this strip.

Elementary school, judging by their appearance and sizes. And why wouldn't Marcie and Walky go to the same school? Billie is there in the shot as well, they all grew up together and Marcie and Sal have been best friends since childhood.

Pretty sure they aren't literally holding a gun up to their daughter's head to send her to conversion therapy, just saying.

Also, pretty sure they aren't date raping anyone.

(I'm not going to conclusively say that the principal is better than Blaine, yet, though.)

Is the first Ruth's parents? If so, fair point. As to the date rape, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he's covered up rapes for kids like Leland who got a few years older and "made a mistake," as he'd probably phrase it.

I'm talking about Toedad (Ross MacIntyre, Becky's sperm donor ("father" or "dad" is too kind)) in the first case.

Although, possible point, on rape coverups, especially given that this is apparently a commentary on the Brock Turner case.

Unintentionally good timing considering his early release. Also it's still strange seeing Marcie talk.

No, people always knew he was going to get out after three months. That was the original sentence, six months jail, early parole in three for good behavior. It's not hard to be on 'good behavior' if people are bending over backwards to excuse whatever horrible things  you've done to try to sweep it all under the rug. Which is exactly what is happening with Leland. He comes from a 'good' (rich and/or influential) family, so nothing he does is going to get him in trouble because his folks can pay off or intimidate people in authority. Sal on the other hand is going to get several books thrown at her for doing the same thing Leland did yesterday, and be forever branded as a troublemaker.

In yesterday's strip, the line about Sal "claims" Leland did something hits hard for me. I definitely remember hearing that when speaking up about being bullied, specifically though my most notable situation actually involved a teacher.

It wasn't the first time I learned the system isn't fair but it was the first time I had to back down and pretend to believe that I provoked the situation and was in the wrong for, basically, survival.

In today's I both felt a bit of delight for Sal fighting back and trying to deliver karma, but also a lot of fear for what might result from it.

The past few strips bring to mind the first time i was raped. It was by a "good boy" with "lots of promise", i.e. the star quarterback in a year our school expected to go to state. Long story short, no charges were filed.

For a moment of satisfaction of hurting Leland, Sal is going to have to deal with trouble at school and home, and probably in the larger community in the likely case Leland or his family decides to make her life hell over this. Because that's the world we live in. If you stand up against rich bullies, you are the one who pays the price, not them.

You just have to make sure your method of dealing with the situation is a permanent one, and one whose consequences you are prepared to face.

I strongly suspect that, after getting herself all riled up and ready to go, poor Sal is feeling let down by Amazi-Girl's sudden realisation that there are things that are far more important to her than any desire to fight her.

If Amazi-Girl is sufficiently loud and clear about why she wants to add a few scars to Ryan, I strongly suspect that Sal is going to realise that her view of her adversary might not be as correct as she imagined.

And so we have seen with today's comic. They pretty much went from 'let's beat each other up' to 'let's go get the guy who hurt Joyce' in a couple of sentences. ah, Super hero team ups.

You see, I know what you are, Ryan. You’re a filthy predator that uses whatever means he wants to get the satisfaction he wants from naive, good girls. You hide your true nature under the shadow of your father’s position and you use it as a lure.

Understand that you’re not dealing with the College administration; you’re not dealing with the cops; you’re not even dealing with an angry family member. You’re dealing with me. It’s amazing how persistent things can be, Ryan. If someone knows their way around websites, things from your past just keep coming back. On blogs, news sites, recruitment sites and even the email inboxes of college administrators and HR directors.

If I ever see your face again, Ryan… If I even hear of you being around… Then I will dedicate the rest of my life to making the rest of your life… a living hell.

Now… Get out of my town!

Ah yes. Passing the problem off to some other unsuspecting community without addressing the core problem and giving him access to an entirely new pool of targets who don't know what he's about. That will go over well.

Over on the comic's website, some readers are speculating that Willis may be about to play a wildcard and have Ryan seriously escalate because he simply has never been defied like this ever before and his brain can't handle it.

What if he's armed, after all? A fight that involves some kind of firearm in the crowded atrium of the lecture hall could get ugly very quickly.

You raise a valid point.  But I can see if that were the case where the Senators own Security would get involed - Secret Service maybe - which could make things worse.

Or maybe it's just time for Ryan to be iin for that beat down he avoided last time.

No matter how it falls, it looks like Ryan is about to serious get it. If he follows through with that attack he's posturing he'll have to deal with Amber, the security, maybe even Sal. Though she seems unlikely unless the rest can't stop him.

Even if there's punctuation in between, Dawson still called Ryan "dudebro".

Which, when you think of it, is in many ways punishment enough!

He probably thinks it is a compliment.

I still don't know when "bro" became an insult. Or how "dude" before it makes it worse somehow, since "dude" on its own is neutral.

It's mostly an insult due to the type of guys who refer to each other as bro.

Let's put it this way, Walky is a (much much much milder form of) dudebro, too. "Dudebro" boils down to... a man who has internalized toxic masculinity, and does things to prove that they are sufficiently masculine. Which, that in turn leads to misogyny and homophobia.
