Man, this comic is a reminder of that weird "always takes place in the year it was published despite 2010 only being a couple months ago" thing.

Yeah, I was wondering how long it would take for Trump references to start showing up after the election (I think his buffer at the time went to March).

Oh hell, Ryan. This can't be good. I seriously doubt a random intern would be sent to do something about Leslie. More likely he's here for Dorothy, Joyce or someone else. Remember that his face has been plastered on social media about his attempted rape of Joyce. The fact that he's wandering around inside with his hoodie up makes me think he's hiding.

Reading the latest has made a sad thought occur to me. It's great Dorothy and Walky are talking more but before they got together Dorothy thought she didn't have time for a relationship. Even when they got together she made it clear that it'd be temporary and school was to take precedence.

Now it's cutting into her time and grades significantly. This timed relationship might be coming to its end.

Not sure it's to solely to blame but it obviously takes up a lot of time. Dorothy puts a lot of pressure on herself and Walky is definitely something she could consider a distraction. He doesn't do it intentionally, in fact he recognises how much she does. So I'd hope Dorothy can rebalance things to keep herself happy and on top of things but that still involves looking at everything she's doing and figuring out her priorities and how that means reorganising her time.

I think that the point is that Dorothy is possibly going to think her relationships and social contacts are to blame and might start isolating herself.

I had a very similar issue to Dorothy my Freshman year of college. I mean, I never was a perfect student like her. But I came to college with way too many interests and this can-do "try anything once" spirit.

My first semester I was writing for the newspaper as an opinion writer. But a couple weeks into my 2nd semester the opinion editor got bumped up to managing editor and the new opinion editor was a massive prick, so I quit. My grades improved rather quickly after that, even with me still doing debate team, volunteering, and a few other clubs. I hadn't realized how much of my time and attention it took up.

Which got me to thinking why Dorothy, a pre-law major who wants to go into politics, is spending her time writing for the paper. That seems like a droppable interest.

I think that Willis wanted to create a Chloe Sullivan/Clark Kent dynamic between Dorothy and Amber with Dorothy becoming Amber's 'true believer' supporter to counter-balance Sal's opposition. However, I'm getting the feeling that he dumped this arc after a while.

It's times like these I wish blog posts counted as comic canon (for me). Also, it's rather comforting that Dorothy doesn't seem to think that her relationship is expendable and is instead looking for other solutions.

If you view comments as part of the comic, then sure. It makes sense. And I hooe Walky can be convinced that he's not. Then again, I often have difficulty being convinced that I'm not.

Given the nature of Indiana and of the Republican Party, today's events (5/11) were entirely predictable and foreseeable. By everyone except Robin, of course.

[edit]
Now I find myself musing on the consequences of this for Robin. I have got the impression that Robin has been basically groomed to be a Republican politician all her life by her political family (IIRC, her father was a GOP politician too).

I think I can see it in my head: Studied Politics, Philosophy & Economics in college; first job was an intern in her dad's political back-office team where she kept her head down until she was parachuted into a safe seat as a 'reliable' (i.e. entirely controllable) candidate. Basically it is quite possible that her only work skill is being a politician. She has no other experience and no other skills. I bet she lives in apartments that come with the job and relies on her political expense account and the largesse of lobbyists for her lifestyle. Now that is all gone. No, I don't think that Robin has much in the way of savings; that really doesn't seem in-character for her.

It is quite possible that Robin's parents will disown her for 'dishonouring the family name' or something similar. It is quite possible that Robin is going to learn what it is to have Becky's life from a first-person perspective: to be a disowned and homeless bisexual woman who suddenly is finding just survival a challenge.

I really want to know how Clint (for such is his name) manages to wangle so much information about Ruth's personal life out of people. I can't shake the feeling that he's a trustee or something. I've heard that having financial control or influence is a very easy way to persuade people to forget their duty of care and confidentiality.

He is also her legal guardian and she recently had an episode where they believed her to be suicidal. Yes, they are going to turn over information they feel is pertinent under the idea that he will be able to help her. Since Ruth doesn't talk about her home life, the medical professionals have had no reason to understand that he is the source of her problems, not the solution.

However, she's over 18, so he's no longer her legal guardian unless a court's declared her to be sufficiently impaired that she requires a legal guardian.

I do imagine that he is her emergency contact, however, and also probably co-signer on her student loans. I suspect that he was rather insistent that she grant the school permission to inform him of things.

She had a name before - the tags are canon - but I think this is the first time that she's been named in the strip itself in a main comic.

(There's also talk in the comments of Patreon exclusives where she's apparently played a part, though, so maybe she was named before in-comic.)

True - more correctly, the tags reflect canon as of the publication of the latest strip.

What's interesting is, Willis was using "amazi-girl" and "amber" tags separately for a couple years at least, before all but outright stating Amber's dissociative identity disorder in-comic.

Either way, (re: Today's strip) "Ryan" may well still be his name... but he lied to the 'party' reps.
(I somehow doubt this though...)

Calling it now: Robin's new campaign manager is going to be one Becky McIntyre and the whole thing will be run out of the staff break room at Galasso's. It will crash and burn, of course, but will be spectacular and glorious in how it does so.
