She had a name before - the tags are canon -

... Unless, (as seems to be the case from today), they are not...
What hilarious timing. I'm not sure I would consider the tags canon, because they're not in the comic. Either way, I wish she'd asked what his name was before she fired them.

From my experience, Willis doesn't really do 'romcom' cliches in Dumbing of Age but, who knows?

You think?

The very first 'relationship', with Dorothy's shift to Walky, seems as rom-com as it gets.
Similarly the apparent "tension" between Danny and Ethan.
The collision of Becky and Dina...

Abusive Fathers/Parents aside... The whole thing is a rom-com!  :)

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I'm convinced that Becky and Galasso's will have a role to play here. I'm thinking that Robin is going to be standing out there until morning and, when Galasso and his wife come to open up, Mrs G will take pity on her and insist that she's given a job. She'll become one of Galasso's weirder minions - the table-waiting woman who will tell everyone that she's waiting to be re-elected to Congress with "My Lesbian" at her side. Becky becomes her close friend in approximately the same vein as the friends she had Shortpacked!. One of the roles Becky will have is to keep Robin slightly connected to reality.

Sometimes, the path to redemption requires a long journey through the wilderness to discover wisdom. For a personality like Robin's that journey naturally takes on the characteristics of farce.

In Rachael's defence, she's probably been holding in her hatred for Ruth for a very long time, aware of Ruth's position of power and the trouble that it could cause for her if she spoke up. However, I don't think that in any way takes away her moral obligation to give Ruth precisely one chance to prove she isn't telling the lies that she must to keep her position.

Besides, I've got a feeling that this tirade is hurting Amber too.

P.S.:
I've got to share this picture; Willis has put up a new character model for Joyce.

Seems to be a lot of hatred towards Rachel 'over there' (and a modicum over here too!)

And whereas I *get* the ire, I don't get the (what seems to be) double standard re: Ruth/Robin and Rachel/Robin haters.

Seems to me the same people who Decry Robin as abusive and hate her for it don't mind that Ruth did similar things (more openly and violently) - Whereas Robin is just blind to her own wishy-washiness.

And When Robin at least *tried* to redeem herself (no matter how clumsily) those same people decried her for being irredeemable!

Can't have it both ways, surely?

A LOT of the comments seem to hinge on the fact that Rachel is *abusing* (I totally disagree with that BTW) someone who has just been released from Hospital etc etc...

To me, that ignores the fact that if this is how Ruth has *been* (up until, what, last week/fortnight 'comic time'?) then would those same people have supported Ruth had she NOT "attempted suicide"? I have no doubt that many victims of bullying and abuse, which Ruth herself committed, would often wish someone like that *were* dead.

So why the sudden outpouring of hatred for Rachel for calling her on her shit?
Does the fact that she attempted (apparently) to kill herself make the historic abuse go away?
Should it alter the anger and hatred those abused BY her should feel?

Rachel is simply voicing what (I would imagine MOST) suffers of abuse, victimisation, bullying etc feel... That the people who "Promise they'll never do it again" -  ALWAYS do it again.

Does this mean bullies and abusers are beyond redemption? Well... I suppose not.
But try telling that to someone who has heard that same "I'll Change!" promise over and over again.

Were Rachels words out of hand? Maybe. Byt should she be roundly "Fuck You!"'d for daring to rail against her abuser because, for once, her (and other's) abuser has had it the same way she has given it to others? HELL no.

And, as we are still discussing a 'cartoon strip'...

Wait, how is Robin irredeemable?

From the comments thread on the comic page, the consensus is because it's she's GOP congresswoman. I think that some people are treating her as a Trump surrogate for their anger.

It's pretty clear that Amber is close to a melt-down. Sal and Blaine could tell 'Ryan' that when Amber has a melt-down, bad things happen to the people who are the source of her fear.

Hence, the Dreaded Red Background!

(And now.. for a scene change, and a three month long arc where Danny and Ethan discuss the new Transformers movie, with Mike adding the occasional punnage/act of carefully planned 'random' violence)

I'm concerned if Amber is near the same kind of meltdowns as before. Rachel's words indirectly got to her as well and she was in the middle of processing that and Dorothy "breaking up" with Amazigirl.

Although the knife could be a direct reminder of the time with Sal. I'm not entirely sure how she'll react to that but I also admire the amount of composure she has to try and give instructions and reassurance to Dorothy when they're both scared.

She has had considerable self-defense training. One of the main things a good self-defense course teaches you is situational awareness and maintaining a clear head in a crises. Dorothy, on the other hand, has lead a fairly sheltered life as far as I can tell.

The amount of damage to Ryan... and, most importantly, the amount of damage to Amber, psychologically... now depends on how quickly Dorothy or someone else (Sal, maybe?) can reach Amber through her panic-induced psychosis. Amber's sense of self worth is already so weak that beating Ryan into a coma or worse will leave her crushed for the rest of her life under the weight of self-hate and guilt of the kind that's already crippling her.

As someone with my own rage issues, violent impulses, and impulse control problems, I feel for Amber here. I've been there.  I hope someone manages to stop her before she goes too far. Otherwise she likely won't stop until it's too late.

She's in Indiana, which has a robust stand your ground law, and it's against someone who has threatened bodily harm to both her and two third persons, in a manner that is a forcible felony, and on her literal doorstep, satisfying basically every condition of deadly force being justified under the SYG law (and only one is required). She is female, which is a disadvantage, against a politically connected presumed cis white man, but she's conventionally attractive and white herself.

She might be OK here, depending on how good the campus/city police and prosecutor are. (I wouldn't have hope for them being good enough if it were, say, Sal or Asma, though, doing this.)

And, not only that, but I suspect she's better off legally if he dies from the injuries she inflicted, as people in the comments have suggested. Otherwise, it becomes a he-said-she-said scenario. (Mentally is another story...)

Don't get me wrong, I'd totally want "Ryan" dead even if he was a real person, more so, even. If I had Amber's training when I was sexually assaulted, the guy would not have lived to hurt more girls after me like he did. Hell, I am mostly recovered from the trauma of it now, after years of therapy, but I still can't say with confidence that I wouldn't hurt him if I saw him again now that I have the skills to do so.

However, I like Amber and I don't want her to do something that she'll have to suffer unrecoverable consequences for. Amber has a moral code that I do not and I think killing this douchebag would break that and, as a result, break her. She already hates herself too much as it is, which I also can totally identify with.

That said, the world would be a better place with out Rapey McScarface and I only wish there really was a hell for him to burn in.

I don't condemn her for what she's done. But she disarmed him, started beating him, then stabbing him. That goes beyond self defense. And this is not the first time she's stabbed someone as an act of aggression. I'm sure if she had a good lawyer she could argue the case for Stand Your Ground. Who's going to be paying for that though? Certainly not her father. Not the school who just had another violent attack on campus that could have turned deadly. One that Amazi-girl was involved in, by the way. If it comes out that Amber is Amazi-girl here, I could very well see a DA deciding to throw a book at her to remove a dangerous vigilante from the streets.

Note there were no 'air quotes' there. Amber is not some random person who got caught up in the moment out of fear. This is someone with serious untreated mental health issues going around looking for excuses to beat people up. Something like this happening was inevitable. She wasn't going to stop or get help unless she or someone else gets seriously hurt and the whole Amazi-Girl thing exploded. Also, now Dorothy sees who she's been protecting. The growing horror as she continues to attack Ryan shows that she's horrified at what Amber is capable of. Up until now it was sunshine and stopping purse snatchers.

Also, look Amber's face in the final panel of yesterday's comic. She's been waiting for something like this to happen. She's been waiting for someone to give her the excuse to cut loose and unleash all her anger and frustration on. That was a complete 'I'm not locked in here with you. You're locked in here with ME!' moment. I know that feeling. Way more times than I've been comfortable with I've been in that place, where I wanted more than anything else for someone to pull a weapon on me so I could unleash all of my anger and frustration on someone who 'deserved it'. So that I could murder someone with my bare hands without concern for my own safety or future. Fortunately, I have had the self control and wisdom to get away from people when I feel like that until I calm down. Amber puts on a costume and goes looking for someone to attack her. She is not well, and if she doesn't suffer the consequences of this, she's only going to get worse.

I agree she needs some consequences, I don't want those consequences to be catastrophic and irreparable. Which is why I don't want her to kill him, even though I'd like him to be dead. She needs help. If her father hadn't been a complete piece of shit she would have gotten it sooner, before all the trauma and rage had grown and metastasized to its current state. My only hope for this is that she doesn't do something she can't come back from.

If he's not dead, I'll be shocked. That seemed like a punch to assist the disarm, then a very efficient slitting of his throat. I could be wrong, but...bye, whatever the fuck your name was.

Willis can change his mind. Time will tell.
That goes beyond self defense.
...does it, though? We see one punch and one stab. If she got the knife for him and he still seemed like a threat and stabbed him once, I don't see how that's not cut and dry self-defense.

Of course, an overzealous DA combined with the (from what I can tell) super rich dad means that might not matter, so she'd probably still get arrested, and the trial would last far beyond the length of the comic. So...who knows?

It's a combat situation and it's Amber, NOT Amazi-Girl cutting loose here. If she's not either seriously injured during the melee or, as I suspect, she unloads completely on Ryan, I'd damned surprised if he survives this.
