From what I understand, Sal is jealous, because she thinks Malaya is displacing her as Marcie's friend. Though considering Malaya's role in Shortpacked, I'm wondering if she is potentially a girlfriend to Marcie, not a friend-friend...

I'm just, as a person who's been punched in the face many times, that that action scene takes away all the enjoyment I would get from the violence.

I just read every strip Malaya's been in and I still don't get why they hate each other.

Because Malaya's very existence calls upon Sal to share Marcie, the only possession that is uniquely hers that she's ever had. She isn't happy with that fact. I use that word deliberately, by the way. In my view, Sal's issues tend towards possessive behaviour and she doesn't really always think of Marcie as a person with her own desires, just her one relationship anchor in the world.

I think that this is the turning point in Sal and Marcie's relationship. All Sal had to do was be neutrally civil to Malaya but she wasn't even able to do that. No matter how grating she finds Malaya's personality, it's clear to me that Sal's real issue is that she doesn't like sharing Marcie with anyone (she similarly abrasive with Carla who is more mature than Malaya and shrugs it off). I think that Marcie was watching this confrontation long enough to realise this. I'm expecting her to tell Sal that her possessiveness is poisonous and that she's cutting her loose.

Sal has a string of issues but Malaya hit the nail on the head during this confrontation. In the end, Sal wants to be liked and admired but only on her own terms. It's all take for her and very rarely does she unbend enough to contribute positively to a relationship. She can and does do so occasionally; she even can be generous and kind to people in need. However, in general, she's desperate to put across this air of independence and toughness that she seems to have based on a 1970s TV action show and it just turns people off of her.

Sal has issues that makes friendship, especially the reciprocal part of it, enormously difficult for her. Yet she manages it on occasion; she just needs to be motivated to try harder. Maybe Marcie not wanting to interact with her anymore will force her to broaden her horizons and try to address her own problems too.

But he did say that the sexualities of the characters in his previous comics carries over (e.g. Ethan is still gay)...

Sal wins an award for her 'the lights finally came on' expression in this strip.

Meanwhile, I really think that Marcie is getting tired of Malaya and Sal's issues and having to be the adult in the room whenever her best friend and would-be girlfriend meet!

On a personal note, I seem to have been blocked from posting comments on dumbingofage.com. The site receives and stores my posts but won't display them. It would be nice if someone told me why but I'm not holding my breath.

You know... I think that, if anything, Malaya is going to hate Sal very overtly and unsubtly trying to be 'nice' to her for Marcie's sake even more than she hated her being jealous and antagonistic. Worse, it is going to have a serious 'Twilight Zone' feel to it that's going to make her paranoid about who else is going to be replaced with a pod-person!

Marcie obviously finds Malaya attractive but, IMO, she still is a confrontational jerk who is too quick to take offence or start trouble. I guess that we'll see but I have a nasty feeling that Sal's comment on bad relationship choices has the weight of prophecy. I'm hoping not; Marcie is a nice person and doesn't deserve that in her life.

I also have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised how Sal has put Marcie 's happiness in front of her hatred for Malaya. She's a better and more mature person than I thought.

Just for the record, so far Marcie has not explicitly expressed interest in a relationship with Malaya. She only said she wants to have sex with her.

That's good.  My OCD is getting better, but I still have problems touching strange people.  Hence my username here.  I do still get the whole "hedgehog's dilemma", in where I really want to get close to other people, but am afraid of getting "poked" by the "spines".  At least now, I have gotten to the point where I can get kissed on the cheek by someone I know without flailing about and nearly falling off a barstool.

Well, at least Billie, whilst an obnoxious drunk, is still semi-willing to play along. I just wonder if this was spontaneousor if Joyce had been badgering and rehearsing them relentlessly?

Poor Sarah, though! I can't help but notice that she really despises herself.

It upsets me that everyone actually IS drunk. I think Sarah should be accepted for who she is, and while I would personally like her better when I'd been drinking, it's sad that everyone feels the same.

Also, how. Fucking much vodka did Billie bring, that she, walky, AND Dorothy are all fucked up.

I don't think that Dorothy and Walky are experienced drinkers. Enough hard stuff to knock them out probably would barely make Billie's liver raise an eyebrow!

I suspect that there will be a cold period between Joyce and Dorothy. She knows Joyce's views and to spit on them in Joyce's personal space is not the act of a good friend. I just hope that the morning after is suitably horrible for her and Walky.

You'll notice that I'm not so hard on Walky; well, frankly, I kind of expect him to be thoughtless and irresponsible!

I forget what flavor of Christianity Joyce was brought up in? I was brought up Catholic, and there's no problem there with drinking. Drinking to excess is considered a flaw that can lead to sinful behavior. But having an occasional (or regular...) drink wasn't a problem. The issue more at hand probably  is one that nobody besides Becky and Sarah know about. The reason the party is being held for Joyce is to help her try to deal with her first party she went to in college, where she had her drink drugged and was nearly raped. Having a bunch of her friends getting drunk at her 'safe party' is probably not going to do her mindset any good.

That said, neither Dorothy or Walky are aware of the reason behind the party, and they are not drinkers. Plus they are on the small size. One (probably healthy) shot of whatever Billie has in her flask is probably enough to get them feeling juuuuust fiiiine.

From the About page:
Quote
And like Joyce, I was raised as a nondenominational fundamentalist (nonaligned Protestant), which means she’s not Catholic.

Also, Dorothy and Walky are aware of why she would want a safe party - Dorothy was, after all, who brought Joyce to Roz's party, and Walky was present for the discussion the next morning.

They are aware of the attack, sure. But I don't remember anyone telling them why Joyce was having a party in her room, specifically because of that issue. It seems a bit far a stretch to guess someone were to have figured that out instead of you know... 'Joyce's friend is visiting, and she's throwing a party.'

Also, how. Fucking much vodka did Billie bring, that she, walky, AND Dorothy are all fucked up.

I don't think that Dorothy and Walky are experienced drinkers. Enough hard stuff to knock them out probably would barely make Billie's liver raise an eyebrow!

Apparently, ERRYBODY's a damn lightweight! I mean, I could maybe believe it took only the one mixed drink to get Walky fucked up, and the same to get Dorothy similarly plastered, but adding in Danny, and still saying that's enough to get Billie even a bit buzzed?

The fuck is that, Mary Poppin's flask? I agree, Billie's been generous as HELL

To be fair, Billie was probably pre-gaming.

Or has multiple flasks. Though that seems less likely.  She must have been pretty generous, if she's got drunk herself and four other people at least. That must be something high octane. Though I wouldn't necessarily put it past her to fill her flask with something like Everclear... I can see Dorothy and Walky getting buzzed off one drink. But Danny and Ethan are bigger.

And drunk, right next to each other...
