Or just her interest in Raidah not being happy. This won't end well for anyone.

Well, looks like Sarah's got herself a mission. Seduction based on a revenge agenda is never a good thing. Frankly, this can't end well!

I feel very sorry for Jacob. He's very much been dumped in the middle of an avalanche of drama that is not his own. Now he's caught between two intelligent and forceful young women who both clearly intend to use him as a weapon against each other. All he wanted was a stress-free second date!

Meanwhile, poor Joyce is likely to be left trying to carry the party hostess duties alone (or at least alone with Becky, who is jealous and defensive). Nope, nothing could go wrong there!

I know this is spiteful and not nice, but I do not want Jacob and Raidah to be happy together. Raidah behaved so meanly and has been portrayed as a pretty shallow and manipulative person, and Jacob seems like a really nice guy... Also, I'd much rather see Sarah be happy... To be fair, Sarah's 'renewed interest' really seems to be less in Jacob than in Raidah not 'getting' him either, which will probably not make her happy, no matter how this turns out.

I don't want Jacob and Raidah to be together because I want Jacob to be happy and Raidah is an absolute shit.

(I'd like Sarah to be happy too, but as long as her happiness is tied to someone else dating or not dating someone else then she never will be.)

To be fair I think Sarah was interested in Jacob. She's just so determined to sabotage all of her relationships that she pushes most people away.

It's too late for Sarah to pretend that this never happened. The whole party heard her ranting and there is no way now to claim that it never happened! Hopefully, social embarrassment will stop her from doing anything stupid ("Oh no! Everyone will know what this is about! "). Meanwhile, I've got a feeling that Raidah's 'personality' will do Sarah's dirty work for her!

I still hope that Sarah will tell Jacob her side of the story in spite of her embarrassment and not just withdraw into her shell completely.

Optimistically, what Raidah is saying in today's comic is that Sarah is toxic to her. Being around Sarah makes her behave in a way she doesn't like and do things that she would normally never consider doing.

Pessimistically, she's trying to slander Sarah to get Jacob's sympathy and aid.

I've got a feeling that, at the end of this, neither woman will end up looking particularly good.

Realistically, both are varied levels of true. I expect she was mostly intending to make Sarah look like the guilty party, but that doesn't mean she's not aware of how hateful she's been toward and around Sarah. In the lie, there is truth.

Sometimes I find that CloudFlare has a glitch which means that it fails to refresh after making a post; it is easy to try again until it works, which can result in multiple posts - and not everyone has the forum set to display what they've just posted, so they don't automatically get a reality check.

Interesting that she pointed out the thing Sarah did that was actually bad, instead of the thing she's actually mad at Sarah for. I wonder if that means she knows deep down Sarah was right to do that.

Also I deleted chaos's multiples.

I think it's more a case of Radiah trying to justify the unjustifiable - her failure to accept that Sarah did the right thing before it was too late.

Blast! Now Willis is making me want to hug Joyce too!

I think that this is the moment when Wally really comes to appreciate just how alien Joyce's belief system makes her to the broadly-accepted definition of 'normal' for a college student.

It is 9:30, I'm bored, and I checked back. Somehow, I had missed that Billie was adding liquor to Walky's drink in the last frame.

I stand by my initial statement, and add that the alcohol could add to the enjoyment of ridiculous justifications

Poor Dina; I'm sure Sarah wouldn't mind if she came and sat with her in the bathroom for a while, if she needs to have time to let her brain catch up! I have heard of that before - autistics saying that there are 'too many faces' or 'too many voices'. Their condition makes it difficult to process the social information humans get from voice tone and facial expression. Basically, Dina is suffering from a biological version of a buffer overflow.

As for Danny? I think that he needs to realise that Walky has a near-flawless gaydar/bidar.

[edit]
The float-text for the strip is "True stories abound". I wonder if David Willis knows a man or woman with such a condition?

[edit 2]
"Boy-fling" is going into my lexicon as a useful relationship descriptor. FWIW, I interpret Padma as having been Marten's girl-fling, if you need an example.

Dinaaaa...

*Sadface emojii*

In other news, I don't know that Walky was intending his comment to bring up Danny's budding bisexuality or that he was giving his honest opinion. We haven't seen much in the way of him showing interest in anyone but Dorothy, he could be fully bi, for all I know, given my only experience with him is the few filler strips of Shortpacked he appeared in. I mean, Jacob's drawn to be an attractive dude, why couldn't Walky just be pointing out his actual attributes in a half-joking manner?

Problem-solving the Dina way: When overwhelmed by sensory input, muffle said senses. Ethan isn't getting his hoodie back any time soon! He won't mind, though; I've got the feeling that he's one of the world's nice guys.

What's wrong with her

Nothing? I think she is autistic. She doesn't easily understand body language or facial cues, so tends to take everything she's told at face value and doesn't give off those cues herself, so she comes off to others as 'weird'. It also explains why she gets overwhelmed by large amounts of stimulus, like all the people at a party.

What's wrong with her

David Willis has never specified that she has a specific mental condition. However, those in the know believe that Dina is autistic.

If so, then, like a lot of autistics, she has difficulty dealing with crowds and specifically lots of people. Mostly this is due to her brain finding it difficult to process all the information about mood and other social cues coming from people's faces, body postures and tones of voice. Autistics tend to find this very difficult and, in a interacting crowd like this and the conflict with her own desire to interact socially, Dina is probably suffering a bit of a communications lobe overload at the moment. Covering her head so she doesn't have to deal with so much sensory information probably seems like a decent short-term fix. It also means that Ethan is going to have to deal without having his hoodie for a while but so be it.

Well, autism is a general category... I guess is the best way to describe it? Not everyone who is autistic reacts to stimulus the same way. I have a friend who is autistic and when he gets overstimulated, like say being around a lot of people who are being loud like at a party, he will start to get hyperactive. I've heard of people who react like Dina is. Even Sherlock, from the series of the same name, seems to fall under that umbrella. Which would explain in part both his difficulty in relating to and interacting with people, and his habit of noticing things that slip other people's attention.

So, will Walky:

a) Have a night of ecstasy with Dorothy and a purgatorial hangover in the morning or

b) Get his drunk ass benched by his disgusted GF, who prefers sober yet fun (such as Joyce, mostly unintentionally)?

Either way, I think that he will regret trying to handle the hard stuff as easily as Billie can! For him, the shift to 'mistakes were made' has already happened!

Meanwhile, Dina has shown that 'uncanny valley' is such a routine part of Joyce's life that she barely notices anymore! And still, Amber has yet to make her appearance.

Aha! Caught!

Benched, maybe, but Dorothy seems more amused in that last panel than disgusted.

In other news, regarding my quest to complete Shortpacked, CLAIRE appeared in a strip! I was sure it was her on sight, but the only confirmation I could get was that he definitely namechecked Jeph in the post beneath. it wasn't to give credit, though, at least not directly.

He occasionally used Coffee of Doom as a setting in Shortpacked. The tag links underneath those comics contain the tag "Plagiarism of Doom" or something like that. There's another one with Faye in it, that Jeph recognized by putting Amber in a QC comic saying the same line.

Aha!

Are you suggesting I read through it again and look for these things

That IS the strip I was talking about. Didn't notice Faye the first time around, but then, she has no lines and I don't notice background characters so much. Claire would have slipped by too, most likely, if not for her connection to the punch line.

It's so weird to see DoA characters in other comics...even though they were there first. Also, heh:

What's wrong with her
What's wrong with her
It's assumed by many, including me, that she has Aspergers Syndrome.  Which is part of the Autism spectrum.

This is classic Aspy behaviour:

http://www.dumbingofage.com/2012/comic/book-2/05-saturdays-all-right-for-slighting/weird/

I actually didn't realize that was unusual, until I read the symptoms of Aspergers.

I said to my childhood best friend that I think I might have mild Aspergers and he said he never said anything because he assumed I knew.

My dr. said if my friends thought that, then it's probably true.

I'd really like to know what Sarah's glare was trying to communicate to Sal today. I suspect that the two of them were finding an unflattering reflection of their own behaviour in the other and blaming the other for it.

[Edit]
Additional thought not worth a separate post. Why is Sal wearing her gloves when in her dorm room? Two obvious options come to mind:
  • What she's said to Sarah could mean that she's going out to stay with a friend (collecting her toothbrush for her overnight bag);
  • She's so reflexively 'cool' and 'edgy' that some sartorial aspects of it have become subconscious and even unintentionally self-parodaic.
However, there's a third option: What if she's trying to hide something? We know that she became the person she is now essentially due to jealousy issues directed at her brother. Maybe she has some relics of those feelings that she doesn't want to make public like self-harm scars?
