When Claire moves out she needs to be Tai's roommate.

She's the stuck up professional.

She's the irresponsible free spirit.

And we've got a sitcom!

Crouching Emily, Hidden Condoms.

And, depending on exactly when and where we're talking, almost everything else too. There's something about human brains that not only decides the weird shimmery liquid is obviously magic, but that it's exactly the sort of magic that will cure disease and stop you from aging. Both of which it does, in a highly technical sense, but not in a sense useful to the poor person who just consumed mercury.
Putting mercury in "elixirs of immortality" was definitely a thing in ancient China. It is widely believe that the increasingly deranged and murderous behaviour of Qin Shi Huang in later life was caused by consuming such potions, and that he died from mercury poisoning.

I'm going to guess that Claire's indignation has a lot more to do with covering her own desires than it does with her opinions on the sanctity of libraries.

Yeah, I do get the feel of "The lady doth protest too much" too.

I actually don't think so. Her seriousness about her work is a pretty important character trait I think. She probably would try and dodge the issue if they were suggesting sexy times in another environment, but I don't think that's what she's doing here. She's no plans of library lewdness. If such a thing does happen it'd be a heat of the moment thing and she'd probably feel super guilty afterwards.

Claire will need to lighten up a bit if she ever ends up working at a public library.  Despite the cliché the ones I've been in aren't full of stern librarians going "Sh!!!" at the slightest noise.

Public libraries, sure.  On the other hand, that does sum up my experiences with university libraries pretty well.

Put me down as someone who thinks Claire just is that serious about libraries and/or her vocation.  IMO, she's been shown as such from her introduction, long before she was (probably) thinking about getting involved with anyone.

Further, when someone is serious and/or sensitive about something, they do not need to "lighten up."  That wouldn't be okay to say regarding Claire's (and others) gender issues; why is it acceptable in this context?

"Dang, you just need to chill, stop saying 'I'm offended' and insisting on trigger warnings.  Everyone else is cool with it and you're being such a drag."

I think sometimes Claire is a bit too wound up about some things.  Give it time, the gang'll loosen her up a bit.

After all, if they can get both Marigold and Hannelore to loosen up, Claire should be easy.

That's great for her personal life and I want to see it happen.

It suddenly occurs to me that 'Carnal Playground' may be the name of a band. Either way, that flyer seems bespoke-designed to raise Claire's ire even further!

I suspect that Jeph is writing this arc to remind just how adversarial Claire can get and, maybe, to teach Claire howto iidentify teasing.

This morning, it occurred to me that some people might think that my comments on Strip 2869 are a bit inconsistent, so I thought I should clarify them a bit.

I don't expect Claire to have been planning to jump Marten somewhere in the stacks (although I bet the temptation is there). Rghfrgl is right to say that Claire really does regard the library as something somewhat sacred. However, I also think that she has had erotic fantasies with the library as the setting. This fact makes her feel a little guilty and defensive. That's why she's protesting so loudly and nagging at Tai: She's more shouting at herself for having fantasies about sorting the shelves naked or something. Does Tai realise this? I'm not sure; the flyer has more the feel of: "I'm the manager and you can't stop me! Nyah-nyah!"

If I'm right, then I'm sure Jeph will take diabolical delight during this arc of having Claire continually let these little naughty thoughts slip out, flustering her still further.

There's something about human brains that not only decides the weird shimmery liquid is obviously magic, but that it's exactly the sort of magic that will cure disease and stop you from aging. Both of which it does, in a highly technical sense, but not in a sense useful to the poor person who just consumed mercury.

It's a part of the human brain that clearly still works potently in some people...

Jeph is introducing the concept via his plotline, so of course it's appropriate.  I would be surprised if Jeph doesn't include this idea as part of the plotline, for that matter.

No. It is not an appropriate thing to ask. Unless you are the one in the relationship with a trans person, or any person for that matter, it is not appropriate to ask what is under their clothes. And yes, it is the word of Jeph and the Mods that asking about Claire's genitals is not an appropriate subject.

Even when they have sex it's probably not going to be brought up. I mean, I'm sure they'll have a conversation, but the audience won't be privy to it.

Global Moderator Comment If Claire brings the subject up then we will have a different discussion. Until then, there are at least three great reasons to respect her privacy even though she doesn't exist. One is that it's good practice for dealing with trans* people who do exist. Another is that real trans* people are hurt by such discussions. It took me a while to understand this but after multiple people's feedback climaxing in a Zoexplanation the conclusion is firm. Finally we are on private property and our host has said in black and white that Claire's privates are off limits. Yes, despite our TMI relationship with the characters in general. See also the specific rules about trans* discussions in the notes for new members.

The concept seems pretty clear, but maybe to remove any ambiguity for those who wish to test boundaries, just say that until otherwise stated, it will never be discussed here, no matter what happens in the comic?

I think that Pintsize is employing a diabolical form of reverse psychology. When Faye realises that she's got so low that only Pintsize is happy with her coping strategy, it will be like a bucket of ice water in her face. Pintsize can be subtle like that sometimes; he's quite unappreciated for that.

"Marty, help me! I've got so bad that I'm relying on Pintsize to justify my drinking!"

What's the DTs?

A damn fine Belgian ale. http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/180/1385/
Though I think Faye is more of a whiskey gal, so I'd be surprised if she picked up any beer.

Plus, the more booze she dumps in him, the less she'll drink. I think we're seeing a rare Moment of Kindness(tm) from the little guy.

Well I guess I wasn't the only one thinking that this was actually helpful.
Although Ben seems to be suggesting that it's actually a subtle way to create a spiral of destruction.
I feel like there was another time where Pintsize dared Winslow to do something and then shit went to hell partially due to that, which would support the theory that Pintsize is subtly undermining them.

(edit: phone autocorrected "Pintsize" to "Pint size" in original post)

And in odd, completely unrelated news, apparently either Faye or Marten put a picture on the wall over their sofa at some point after Marten and Claire did the cuddling trick.  Kinda dark theme, too.  Probably Faye.
