some great listings here.

there is no way I can narrow it down to only two songs, the more you think about "2" songs, the more songs will pop into your head.

the first one that pops into my head as -life altering- is "I Know You" by Henry Rollins (Nine Inch Nails "A Warm Place" is the music, Rollins just supplied the perfect voice for it).

as for a song I feel everyone needs to hear at least once?  the cover of "One" by Johnny Cash.

Neva Dinova--Tripped

The Drive-By Truckers-- When The Pin Hits The Shell (or pretty much that whole album, Decoration Day, its great)

And because I'm a cheater...

Jeff Buckley--Hallelujah

It's hard to think of just 2.

Yeah, you should definitely check out their other stuff if you get a chance. It's all equally as catchy and awesome. Plus some of the songs on FLCL were edited/re-recorded for the show. Also, if you can find it, check out the side project Nine Miles and their album "Solomonic Polar Bear". Its the best Japanese ska/reggae I've ever heard.

This will change shortly no doubt, but first songs to come to mind are;

Iris-Goo Goo Dolls (which I'm sure everyone's heard anyway)

and

Mac The Knife-Figment (as far as I know you can listen to a live recording on their site in the Music section, http://www.figmentband.com )

"The Laws Have Changed" by The New Pornographers. Superbly melodic, amazing tune.

"Blackbird" by the Beatles. Yeah, you laugh. Some people have actually never heard this song, which I consider to be almost a crime.

And a better RL Burnside song is "Stole My Check."

Lazy motherfucker stole my check....

Elliot Smith - Waltz #2 (Amazing, simply amazing)

The Smashing Pumpkins - 1979 (You can´t die before listening to it!)

Agreed, sir. On both counts.

This thread is even harder than top albums/bands/whatever... you've raised the steaks Jamoky!

I'm sure everyone has already heard both of these songs, and I'm not repeating any that have already been done.
"Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometimes" - Beck
I'm a big fan of Beck's work - he covers a lot of ground without losing depth. This song is simple, almost classic in its lyrical styling, but evocative. Oh, and it comes from a great movie.
"Paranoid Android" - Radiohead
I don't think there's been enough Radiohead in this thread, so I'll add this song. It was originally three different themes, but they put them all together and the result is one of their most diverse and intricate songs. I think it showcases not only their talent, but also the diversity of their styles.

Via Chicago - Wilco

The first line is what makes me love this song so much.

And since I have trouble coming up with two songs, I'll just place a fairly obvious song title that I HOPED everyone has heard. :)

Although the concentration of truly AWESOME songs that have been suggested here is dangerously high, I feel I should maybe add something a little outside...

Samuel Barber - Adagio for Strings (one of the most evocative pieces ever written imho, everyone should recognize it)

Dimmu Borgir-Puritania

It stomps, it crushes, it destroys, it fuses classical music with industrial techno and heavy metal.  Emerging from the static it marches straight from hell and starts eating things. It's got every cliche, every stomping military march-beat, a sample of one of Hitlers speeches in the background, the greatest use of sweep-pads ever in music, and it ends with a crackling radio voice saying "Earth successfully erased" in a heavy norwegian accent. Wonderful. Like nuclear war set to music.

Finntroll-Slaget Vid Blodsalv

Death! Evil! Black Metal! Accordions! Finntroll were once described as the soundtrack to a barn-dance in hell. They're that and so much more. This song  is so wildly energetic and insanely powerful that it just blows you away. Reeling in like a drunken viking horde and looting everything in site, the song builds up to a peak before blasting off the most insanely spirit-soaring keyboard section ever over a primal war-cry that carries the song back on again to even more dizzying heights. It's a bar brawl of a song, a mad screaming drunken dance tune, filled to the flim with a sense of cheerful malice. This band isn't just going to kill the christian scum, they're going to make a party out of it, and the word 'quaffing' is definitely going to be involved. It's the musical equivalent of the Gremlins. Choosing a single track from this amazing band was very hard indeed, but it's the war cry thingy at 1:20 that really makes this song stand out from the crowd. Other really good finntroll tracks include Trollhammaran, Fiskarens Fiende, Jaktens Tid, Midnattens Widunder, the acoustic Forsvinn Du Som Lyser, Der Hornkronte Konungen and Svartberg.

'Oxygen' is a recent find thanks to someone on my lj flist.. it is very good.  I need to put it on a mix soon, so I don't have to bring up my playlist just to hear it anymore.

The 'Bright Eyes' was my fav. in '01... I actually karaoke'd (sang horribly from memory) it for a boy I didn't like yet, but was on the verge of liking... that moment could've ruined it... not sure if it's a good or bad thing.

As for the second, hmm. I guess it should be a Pixies song. Let's make it 'Velouria'.

That's funny...I have memories of singing that song with an emo boy I really like in the middle of my local indie club, to the point where you could hear it above the music.  Again, nothing's happened as yet, but I have my fingers crossed.  If it doesn't, I shall blame it on that song, and not my shameful drunken rendition of it...or all the other reasons people never hook up...

The Cure: The Lovecats
Cursive: The Rhyme Scheme

when I was a kid I think my moms taste in oldies really influenced me too. the first time I ever heard music that I thought was moving was when I was 7 or 8 listening to buddy holly or diana ross with her. I'm sure that had to have rubbed off on me in some way

YES! Lovecats is the best Cure song in ever. I listen to that every time I... do... stuff. That song is my theme song almost virtually. Anyways:

My two would have to be:
Trilogy - Emerson, Lake, and Palmer
(If you can find a better classic prog rockout than this, I will most certainly love you forever. The piano at the begining is the definition of keyboard mastery and then Emerson kicks it into electric, and still plays better than almost any other person has ever played.)

Please, Mr. B - The Sugarplastic
(This song is three things. Firstly, it can relax me even when i am majorly pissed off. It doesn't make me irritable, or more angry, or get me ready to vent. It just calms me. Second, it is the Topangan theme song. The second verse is about Topanga. Thirdly, it is beautiful, slow, and nirvana-inducing to the point of complete serenity.)

The Echoing Green -- She's Gone Tragic
depressing lyrics set to very cheery, techno, this song somehow never fails to put me in a good mood, and it's just enjoyable

Gackt - Last Song
personal reasons-- essentially, it's a song about losing someone and keeping a good attitude about it, and current events just made it relevant for me

or, to keep both songs in English, substitute Athenaeum -- Lifeline for "Last Song"

"Everyone's your friend
in New York City
And everything looks beautiful
When you're young and pretty"

Hell yes. And I most definately agree to "Paranoid Android" as well. It is likely my fave radiohead song. That or Subterranean Homesick Alien. Just cause of the way Tom Yorke says "Lost it completely". So much awesome. And "P.S. You Rock My World" holds some of the world's best life philosophy set to music.

Anyhow. I'm putting two more.

Carousel - Mr. Bungle
Has ever a song been co-ordinated as well as this? And with horns, and Mike Patton singing and about an evil circus? Nothing can compete.

God's Away On Business - Tom Waits
Evil incarnate.

hm.. Guess I'll throw in two of my own, both being of the kind that I listen to when I wish I could just dissapear. (Instead I end up forgetting things, which is almost as good I guess)

Yoko Kanno - Space Lion
A song most would recognize from the Cowboy Bebop OSTs, it really gives the feeling of life and if I didn't know better I'd say that it was heavily influenced by Jan Garbarek

Sarah Brightman - Eden
A song that makes me just as apathetic as Space Lion, albeit in a completely different way.

Hmm...  gonna have to go with

Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works vol. II - Lichen

and

Iron & Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days - Each Coming Night

Honestly, I'd tell people to go listen to the entirety of Aphex Twin's ambient works...  the more I listen to it, the better it gets... it's just a work of pure genius.  Using the simplest of compositions and sounds, he conveys a broader range of mood, motion, and color in his sound than most artists could hope to in a whole career.  It's the audial equivalent to a painter drawing a simple circle that summarizes the emotional range of human existance.

Keasby Nights is easily one of the top ten third wave ska songs ever.

Also, I think it is by now realized that everyone should have heard "P.S. You Rock My World" at least once. Get to it, the old woman is honking her horn, and the happy man's taking a walk.
