I've seen that first image before, without knowing what it meant. Now I get that it's a reference to the second, but I still don't know why it's sad. I don't think I want to.

The very short version of it... In the world of Full Metal Alchemist, trying to use alchemy on living people turns out badly, always. We spend several episodes of the main characters staying with and learning from an alchemist, and getting to know him and his sweet daughter and her dog. Once everyone had been charmed by these two, alchemy was used to merge the girl and the dog and like I said... It didn't turn out well. In a lot of ways, it's a defining moment for the main characters, and represented a lot, both in their lives, and in the tone of the story. As such, for fans of the show it is a huge emotional moment. In a very real sense, that storyline is when the main characters stopped being children and had to face some very hard realities about their world and their craft. Not that they hadn't already....

One of my main issues with Brotherhood is how cack-handedly that episode is handled, but I am told the original version does it better. I've not bothered watching to find out.

It has been a while since I saw the original version. Watching Brotherhood some years after seeing the original confused me at first, until I realized it was a retelling of the same story, which I always thought was strange. But yeah, as I remember, the original FMA that story was much better done. It just kind of felt that FMA:B they tried to speed through it... Which is funny, because yes, it was not a central point to the main storyline, it was an important character arc for the brothers, especially Edward.
