Hi, I haven't actually seen the movie (and I don't really think I'd like it because I'm just not into action movies), but I read quite a bit of the discussion about it, and I found this really interesting article:

Have a look if you like!

Echoes some other things I've seen some people say.

Have to respectfully disagree with some of it, though I can sympathize with most of it.

Also did I mention it's just a damned good movie at base anyway?

I will say now that I've seen it, I saw a lot less of the Patriarchy vs Matriarchy/bad vs good than a lot of people were suggesting in it. It was there, yes. And certainly Immortan Joe was a horrible person and a clear example of the worst parts of patriarchy. But the women of the Green Place were not some saints either. They were the better option sure. But...
(click to show/hide)

As far as the women go... Yeah they were clearly conventionally attractive and scantily dressed. I can see that for most of the film they didn't exactly have a chance to change, or clothes to change into seeing as how they were on the run for about 90% of the movie. They all did have moments of strength. But I can also say.. I don't remember any of their names. I vaguely remember one of their names being mentioned... I'm not even sure any of the others were. But then I can only remember 4 people's name in the whole movie so... That's probably not saying a whole lot.

It was a good movie. I kind of see why people would call it a feminist movie. But that really depends on how you define feminism too. Those who think that the existence of women in a starring role means it was destroying 'men's action films' are absolutely absurd though, and feeling threatened over the tiniest of things.

What kind of bugged me was that their names seemed less like names and more descriptions, so I didn't remember any of them either.

On other viewings the 'Wives' do have *some* individual personality, but names were not really a thing.

Toast the Knowing, Splendid Angharad, some others.

Also it's the Bullet Farm, silly Neko.

But that is very much in keeping with the naming conventions within The Citadel, Gas Town and The Bullet Farm. How would it parse from a feminist perspective if the wives were given current pre-apocalyptic names while everyone else get these post-apocalyptic bike gang names?

Those names are very much in line with names from the Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome. Odd names that are basically descriptions are a part of the movie universe.

From what it sounds like, this should happen between The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome. It's the same universe and same title character.

Weird, before it came out I'd always heard it being referred to as a reboot. But now I regret seeing it without seeing the others, I don't like watching movies out of order.

It's picking up the story, not a retelling, if that's what you mean by reboot. And yeah, I thought the same, but I think that was because the story wasn't plastered everywhere.

I recommend the older ones. I loved them as a kid. And actually I saw Mad Max after the other two and was OK with that. It's very different from the other two, but it's good because it does give a reason for why Max is the way he is in the other films.

Yeah, I thought it was a retelling that mostly skipped the origin story. I'll check out the older ones at some point.

As far as I can tell it's just another chapter in Max's story and it isn't really relevant where it happens, timeline wise. We know it's sometime after his origin stuff because there's a few references to his failure to save people from his past but I like that you don't need to have seen any of the other films to get into this one.

Honestly I thought the flashbacks to his failure was how they were choosing to do the origin story, rather than spending a whole movie on it. Didn't realize it was referencing another movie.

"Is this or is it that"

Response: "Eh"

There's a lot of little nods to the old movies, but I'd strongly suggest not getting fixated on chronology or anything like that.

The old films barely had it, and it's the wrong question anyway.

Think of it like the Classic 'Dollars' western trilogy that starred Clint Eastwood as The Man With No Name. These are just stories with Max in them.

Yeah the chronology is extremely unimportant. Mad Max isn't a series with an overarching storyline, it's a bunch of different stories about a guy named Max who lives in the future and terrible things keep happening to/around him.

It's been a while, but I seem to remember that Max has his Challenger in the first move, but not the second or third. In Fury Road, he has it at the start of the movie, but gets captured in the opening sequence by the Warboys and loses the car. Which would seem to indicated the whole 'Fits between Mad Max and Thunderdome' storyline.

Mad Max - Ford Falcon Pursuit Special
Mad Max 2 - Ford Falcon Pursuit Special
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome - Camel Drawn ATV
Mad Max Fury Road - Ford Falcon Coupe

Also, all films follow the original film and Wikipedia states Thunderdome follows 2 therefore there is a presumption of linearity

Wikipedia exists to impose order where it is neither useful nor important.

The metaphor I'm going to use is pretentious, but it's like having a masterful painting in front of you, and insisting on trying to understand it by examining the molecular structure of the paint.

I mean maybe you'll get something out of it, okay, but probably not what you're looking for.

Still, I've said what I feel I need to on the matter, no need to keep repeating myself so I'll stop.
