Steve's living in Canada now, huh? Does that mean he's broken up with Cossette or has she moved with him? Maybe Coffee of Doom really is losing all its children? Well, there is always a new intake of Freshmen at Smif...

Pretty sure he was just visiting. "How was Canada?" has a connotation of him returning from a trip, whereas if Marten had said 'is' instead of 'was' it would infer that Steve's visiting from there.

Marten asked him "How was Canada?", so presumably he was just there temporarily.

I dunno... There's a lot of luck in this scheduling, no matter how you look at it. Faye declares a party just after Steve gets back from Canada, so soon after his return, in fact, that he hasn't had a previous opportunity to give her his gift? That's a lot of plot-driven convenience there!

[edit]
Anyway, thought I'd pass on my headcanon.

Steve was looking for a new job, being at a loose end what with Cossette starting school again. It turns out that the CIA remembered his good work and, armed with a personal recommendation from Tortura, he was able to get a sweet ride as deputy shift supervisor for the security team in Halifax. Cossette, when she gets out of 'finals crunch time' mode, will probably notice he's been gone for six months apart from the occasional long weekend together.

So, how did he get back in time for the party? It's no coincidence. When he got Marten's "Emergency Party" text, he was able to talk one of the hypersonic UCAVs doing air security to give him a lift back to Northampton (14 hour drive becomes a 1-hour suborbital flight). The price? He has to get it Hannelore's autograph.

What is the big project? Well, President Trump was visiting one of his grandkids and caught them watching Macross. There followed an interesting conversation in the Oval Office during which the Secretary of Defence was not able to answer the question "Why can't we do things like that in real life?" to the satisfaction of a scowling President. A couple of years and several hundreds of billions of dollars later, NATO are building a real-life Macross City in Nova Scotia. The geeks are having nerdgasms.

BenRG, come on, man. You gotta start being grounded in reality.

First of all, there is NFW that Trump is ever going to win the Presidency. Not with Hanner's mom around.

Jeph pulling another "where was this character the whole time" made me laugh - also from relief, since I would have been sad to see Steve written out of the strip. Next week, most people will be waiting for Bubbles to arrive. While the arc seems to curve in that direction, to me it doesn't feel plausible.
I like BenRG's headcanon! It also makes it possible that he got the gift right between receiving the invitation, and hopping down to Northampton. Not that it's the only possibility. Marten is in the honeymoon phase with Claire, and might not have seen his friend very much, and Faye in turn even less so.

This is farfetched, but what if Steve recognizes Bubbles from his work?

BUBBLES: "You didn't tell me you were friends with this guy"
FAYE: "What do you know him from?"
STEVE: "THAT ABSOLUTELY DIDN'T HAPPEN HOW ABOUT SOME ICE CREAM"

In metric countries, the average intensity of sunlight is 1350 W/m^2. In countries that use Imperial units, it's only 0.17 hp/ft^2.

Faye is simply putting away the weapons before her guests arrive. It's considered polite in some cultures.

I've been avoiding it because I don't have cable TV anymore and I hate Hulu.

Incidentally, I've been shown 6 ads so far and the show hasn't started yet.

I prefer Netflix because I don't mind having to pay if I can avoid having to watch ads. The selection of stuff on Netflix has been getting crappier lately, though.

I use both, Hulu is for new TV shows and Netflix is for binging older seasons.

Then again, I use my dad's Netflix and my sister's Hulu Plus (and they both use my Amazon video)

Apparently if you pay $12 you can get no ads on all but the newest shows, and on those it's just one commercial in the beginning. Brand new feature.

Honestly it's still fewer commercials than actual TV.

Stop making me hungry, Akima. There's no pho shop around that I know of, and I don't have stuff to make it...

Maybe not the real thing, but you could try for an ersatz version, faux pho.

I'm against that. Call me a faux pho foe.

I think South Park may be heading for Overdone Syndrome, much like The Simpsons did four years ago.

I had to register just to say:

Is Faye holding a sword in the first panel?

WELCOME and holy shit it is

Huh, haven't seen that weapon for a while, I thought thought that was Dora's sword, or at least one the many things that Coffee Of Doom's basement has collected over the years.

A "buttload" is an actual measurement, next time someone tells you that they need a buttload of something, tell them 126 gallons might be a bit too much.

It's pronounced "fah."

Assuming you're being serious, it's properly pronounced "pho".

On another note, in Friday's comic, did anyone else read the first panel like "Cheers"?  Maybe Marten is trying to get a "Norm!" thing started for Steve?

Wikipedia claims, though I haven't checked citations, "pronounced variously as /fʌ/, /fə/, /fər/, or /foʊ/;[2] Vietnamese: [fəː˧˩˧] ".
