"Baltazar & Bleminda" appears on must-read book lists -- It's by José Saramago, a Portuguese writer and recipient of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Literature. Emily is -very- well read!
Wait -- it seems to be a typo for "Baltasar and Blimunda"...

I like the "Bioware trash" shirt that lady is wearing, with the plaid. Is it a subtle reference to his new home? A random style choice? An reference to an obscure  band from Halifax that makes subtle social commentary on the issue of "brain drain" from the maritimes to the central and western provinces? I want to know!

I take it your using AdBlock. Turn it off for a second and realize how the nerdy parts of the web are filled with ads for the Bioware apparel store.

... Or maybe Jeph and I just get similar results on our secret internet advertising profiles.

COMIC

Either "Coffee so strong I had to file for a restraining order" or it's the first time Emily has coffee. Either way, that's pretty close to my reaction on my first Red Bull.

Emily is naturally very energetic, she might not have coffee to keep herself awake. With that in mind, she might have taken up different beverages for idle periods.

And a fond welcome back to Hanners with less lip!

Since Emily is of Japanese descent, she may well have only had tea at home. Though come to think of it, when she and her parents had a meal together, they seem to be eating Western-style food with knives & forks.

Well, it looks like Emily's training has progressed to the point where Dora can have a low degree of confidence that she won't accidentally poison a customer. Unlike Faye, there is a high degree of confidence that she won't deliberately poison a customer!

My new Minecraft persona is going to be "Bleminda". What? It's taken already??
That name is not found on ANY servers on Warcraft.
Unfortunately there are 199 with the name Baltazar.

Either "Coffee so strong I had to file for a restraining order" or it's the first time Emily has coffee.
Well, the basement does need the arachnids removed before the roasting training can progress and Emily is the one most likely to move them to new accommodations without loss of limb. Human or Spider.
Down side would be that she may end up naming each and every one of them or train them to weave in colloquial Klingon..

Jippie!

I´m happy. Hanners new design looked weirder than in the old strips. Maybe because of the upper lip or maybe the lips were thinner than before. Especially yesterday.
Funny thing is, this is only with Hanners. Emily looks very good with lips. Different, but good.

For the last panel: I love it when Jeph play with Photoshop (or Manga Studio). The triple overlay is great. Looks like Emily is about to go to Warp 7 any second.  :-D

Emily is moving at the speed of coffee, last observed in fiction when Philip J. Fry drank 100 coffee cups. During that state, as seen on that Futurama episode, it's not so much that your speed increases but rather the time slows dramatically, which not only allows for everything you do to be done faster in the eyes of people not inflicted with the "made of coffee" state but also to be infinitely aware of your surroundings (hence the statement "I CAN SEE FOREVER" that Emily utters).

I suppose it could have been worse, Emily could have channeled the dark speech of some eldritch being.  It's been done before.

Just makes me think of the scene in Over The Hedge or whatever the animated movie where the hyperactive squirrel character ended up drinking enough coffee and suddenly the rest of the world was moving in slow motion.

There are so many little things this comic says about Dora and Hannelore that I don't particularly like.

Yes. I am overthinking this again. But you probably are too. That's why we're here, right?

Hannelore never felt comfortable enough to tell Dora about how hard her first few days were. Faye addressed this well; "It'll never get easier. You either get better or get fired" At the time.[1]. But none of the other employees felt comfortable telling her? The supposedly micromanaging Dora never figured it out? We're starting to border on willful ignorance.

Blah blah blah overanalysing blah.

However, the other thing that makes me more uncomfortable is that so far Emily seemed to be doing a lot better on her first day then any of the other recent hires[2] and they didn't get trashed so hard by management. Dora's immediate response to how hard she crashed on coffee was "So she sucks at this?". Why? Did it follow on from the customer service story? That wouldn't have been the worst customer service Coffee of Doom had that hour, let alone day, let alone week! And again, Faye was comparatively lenient. Emily was doing fine until Hannelore suggested she drink the shot. Like, we can't even say this was bad decision making on Emily's part!

Any argument replying to this with the words "Someone who can't handle coffee shouldn't work in a coffee shop" will immediately met with; "And yet the recovering alcoholic worked in with bourbon under the counter?" Unless Emily voluntarily starts abusing caffeine highs, this whole strip just hits me wrong. Maybe if we'd seen Emily fuck up harder than her supposed customer service incident?

On something I did like: Dora's lips worked. Hannelore's lack of lips worked. The dichotomy was subtle but really helped make the two characters distinctive from each other. I agree with this art decision.

[1] Well relative to the Pugnacious Peach, I s'pose. Though admittedly good advice to those suffering from depression?

[2] With the notable exception of Dale

This is an impression of Dora that I got from the earliest CoD-based strips, specifically when she was dragging her feet over hiring Penny... or anyone else (I seem to recall that Faye basically had to force her to take action). Coffee of Doom is her independence and a central part of her sense of self-identity. She isn't happy with anyone else being involved in any way. She certainly isn't happy with anyone being in a decision-making position there. She tolerated Faye and Raven but I really got the impression that there were days when she wasn't happy when she had to share the place with anyone else.

Basically, Coffee of Doom is Dora, to a certain extent; there are days and situations where no-one else is ever going to be unequivocally... welcome there, lest she may lose her complete control of this aspect of herself.

To be fair, neither Cosette nor Hanners spent at least three hours of their first day out of commission. For Emily to react that way on her first day does not bode well from a business sense.

But Dora isn't immediately letting Emily go, either. A lot of employers would, in this situation. Dora is giving Emily another day, training with someone who will have a completely different style of management than Hanners will. It should be interesting.

Another thought, Cosette and Hanners both made mistakes and such on their first day, but the mistakes were not huge. They also each showed that they at least had the social acumen to interact with people in a coffee shop. Emily does not seem to have that. Who knows, maybe Emily's fascinating new approach will bring in customers... More likely she will put customers off and other employees will constantly have to drop what they are doing to handle Emily.

We will see.

So Emily has a reaction that is completely out of her control and Dora gets pissed at her? If she drinks coffee again knowing this happens I could see getting frustrated but what the fuck, Dora?

Notice what she also said about Hannelore (to her face, by the way). As I've already posted above, CoD is both Dora's baby and a central part of her self-esteem and identity. I really think that she doesn't like sharing it with anyone. So, there is always a little subconscious bitterness and resentment at new faces taking a little bit of that one thing that is uniquely and absolutely Dora's place, even in such a benign way.

The girl has a dump-truck full of issues, quite frankly.

I'm thinking that Dora's reaction is less about Emily and more about Dora's tendency to assume the worst. She expects everything to blow up in her face all the time, so on hearing that Emily had a reaction to caffine and was high strung here reaction was 'Well, this idea sucked again.'  I'm... somewhat familiar with the feeling that no matter what you do, it's going to fail and how you can over-react to the least of setbacks, or automatically jump to the worst conclusion. Trust me, if that last one was an Olympic event... I would probably fail at it and break my leg in the process.

The fourth entry on this list explains the salamander thing. I've never watched Voyager and had no idea what to expect when googling "salamander episode never speak of this"  :psyduck:

I had no idea either, but I never could stand to watch much of Voyager.
I thought I'd seen all the episodes of Voyager, but I don't remember that one.

I don't think I'm going to run to watch it, either.

The salamander episode was a bad episode even by the standards of Voyager. You're lucky to have missed it.

Now, if only Voyager had done "A Year of Hell" as a season-long arc as originally intended, instead of just a two-part episode with an it-never-happened reset at the end... but that's a conversation for another thread.

So next week we'll see Penelope training Emily. Watching that unfold will probably be a lot like watching a horrible auto accident - you don't want to look, but can't turn away. Only hopefully funnier - Jeph could make a week's worth of strips out of that, each ending with poor Penny pulling more of her hair out. The girl may end up bald by next Friday (or Thursday, if Jeph decides to take the Christmas off).

Someone may lose their job in the fallout, though. Penny may quit out of sheer frustration ("If this is what training new employees is gonna be like, I'm outta here!!!"), or Emily may be fired based on Penny's report to Dora.

I still think Emily will fit in.  She's the kind of personality that suits CoD once she gets over her overenthusiasm and the fact she's never had an Espresso before.

Pretty much anything directly science or engineering related the new Treks somehow gets it all wrong.
The writers don't talk to or just ignore science for the story THEY want to tell and to hell with continuity or consistency.

I think thats why Bab5 or even Captain Power was much better story wise.
