Her garment looks like a dress to me; too fitted (and maybe too plain) for a nighty.

I think I know where this arc is going. I suspect that the next few strips will be a text conversation between Claire and Clinton with Marten advising Claire on what to say and Bar Lady advising Clinton on what to say. This means that we end up with something of a four-way conversation that, as it's being filtered through the text messaging system, actually turns out to be less confusing than those things are normally.

I'm sort of expecting that the penultimate panel will be Marten and Claire asleep in bed together with the next and last panel being Clinton and Bar Lady in bed together, both staring at each other and wearing startled expressions (sort of: "Wait, what? How the hell did this happen?!?").

Her garment looks like a dress to me; too fitted (and maybe too plain) for a nighty.

I don't know; I've seen women's night-shirts that look a lot like that.

I think that Claire has showered, told Marten that she can't face the rest of the day and that she's going to bed early. Then, instead, she sat down next to him and went back to bemoaning the situation with Clinton. It's times like this that Martin's typical passivity and patience is of great use in this relationship!

It's hard to gauge the length from how she's sitting, but given the height difference between them, could it possibly be a t-shirt of Marten's?

Bit too fitted under the chest for that, I'd say.  But I note that although it seems like a continuation of their last shown conversation, and Marten is wearing the same clothes as then, Claire has changed her clothes - which makes it a little harder to reconcile.

Also, I somehow suspect that that particular trope (a woman wearing her boyfriend's shirts) is one that Claire would not particularly want to invoke.

Don't know what I like better - Marten leveling his diplomacy-skills again, or Claire in that gorgeous red dress.

The last panel has some serious "Squeeeeeeeeeee!"

I thought it was a nightie too. It's dark outside the bar in the Clinton comics and it feels like time has passed. Really the best tell would be the material type which is hard to portray in a drawing.

Wouldn't her last suggestion (matching tattoos) make them look even more like creepy twins?

And I kinda like Claire even more when she's got her hair down.

It really looks like a nightshirt to me -- my wife has several nightshirts, and Claire's garment could easily be one of them (except that shade of red would clash horribly with my wife's hair).

And yes, I like Claire's hair a lot in this strip.

She could have the apology tattooed on her! And take a picture of it! With her PHONE! And text Clinton the picture! Great idea, Marten!

And she could have the picture of the text of the picture of the apology tattoo put onto a shirt and delivered to Clinton! With instructions as to how to put the shirt on!

Okay, serious moment for a second. This might be the pessimist in me, but looking at today's comic and the overall feel of the comic over the past few weeks, I kinda get the feeling that we might be edging towards the first big fight between Marten and Claire. I dunno, in my mind there is just something about this storyline that is going to spark an argument between them. I'm not saying it would be a massive blowout between the two, but still the first fight between them.

Of course there's going to be a fight at some point.  Not much point of making them characters in a story if there won't be drama.  That could take months, maybe years in meatspace time.

Damn it, Clin-ton!  Stop looking at your phone and have a real conversation with someone.  :-D

EDIT:  On a historical note, it was while declaring himself as fit as a bull moose that Teddy Roosevelt spewed hate jizz in every direction.

EDIT2:  And that's still more mature than the crap you hear in this election.

Barry, it appears, is a man of surprising depths and insight with some interesting (if true) bar stories.

Clin-ton, maybe a little "'Scuse me just a minute while I put your advice into practice real quick."  Make him feel included, y'know. He sort of has a little stake in this, now. A miniscule, uh, very small one.

I wonder, though, does holding the phone in his robot hand give Clin-ton better or worse phone reception? How about Wi-fi?

Frankly, this resolution sits just fine with me. To be perfectly honest, the entire fight has felt like a very ham-handed attempt to mix in more drama and character development, so I'm happy to see it brought to a relatively quick and painless conclusion.

Probably better than with a flesh hand, since capacitive displays work by sensing the polarization of the charge in your finger, and metal is easier to polarize than water.

Isn't the outcome of Claire (aka Jerkbutt) apologising for doing wrong and Clinton apologising for his over-the-top reaction to it precisely how you called it? Don't understand what outcome you were expecting.

FWIW, most of the new generation of prosthetics is run on encrypted wireless.  To get full articulation you have to read the nerve impulses going to the limb, (and in some of the better ones, there is even e-stim to put sensory feedback signals on the nerves back). This is done with electrical inductance.  But an implant sensor/transmitter with a receiver in the prosthesis is way more reliable and easier to use than those damn wired electrodes, and doesn't require as much battery power = can wear it longer between charges.

Unfortunately, some of these devices have been hacked.  If it's got the wrong firmware for the receiver, somebody could make Clinton spill his drink.  That's much nicer than what somebody could do to people using certain kinds of pacemaker....

Today we learn that Barry has an infallible talent in ruining 'moments'. :-P

Oddly enough, I think that the really interesting story is how he lost his left eye. I'm pretty sure that's the reason why his eyes never quite synch up, by the way - one is a glass prosthetic. The way he closed his left eye in today's strip makes me think that it's that one.

It tells you everything that you need to know about Clinton and Claire's relationship that he saved Claire's contact details under 'Jerkbutt'. Something tells me that the development of their emotional relationship stopped when Clinton was about thirteen and has never budged again!

I figured he just had one of those rubber stylus tips built into the end of one of his fingers. (And each of the two Microsoft Surface pen tips, and the iPencil or whatever the hell the ghost of Jobs is calling it, in other fingertips.)

Are we even sure that Robo-hand's exo-shell is metal? There are evidently touch sensors running through the fingertips; wouldn't that imply a plastic material with metal fibres running through it?

Too lazy to archive-binge, but at the lake house it seems to be implied that the hand has quite a bit of exposed metal.

Sure, but I'd always assumed that they're designed to detect a specific capacitive signature, which is why the styluses you can buy have rubber tips.

They do look for something that's about the same size as a finger (so a narrow piece of metal wouldn't work), but a piece of metal  that's the size of a finger would work fine. In fact, just for the hell of it I just tested it with a 1/2" aluminum rod and my cell phone. I'd post a video to prove it, but I'm not sure how to make my cell phone take a video of itself.

I wonder if he can interface his hand with his Smartphone via a WiFi connection if required

Sure, but I'd always assumed that they're designed to detect a specific capacitive signature, which is why the styluses you can buy have rubber tips.

They mostly have rubber tips so people don't scratch their displays. In school I used to operate my smartphone with my closed stainless steel fountain pen. It worked really well.

Based purely on her hair length, we can reasonably assume that she began her transition at least four years ago. (Assuming a growth rate of about half an inch per month.) If I recall, Jeph has said that he's not going to reveal how much (If any) surgery she's had, but I don't think it's implausible that she could have had some work done in that time. Unless I'm going mad, I do remember it being mentioned that she's taking (Or took,) some level of hormone something-or-another. Looking at Clinton, if he had long hair and had been taking estrogen for 4+ years, I think he'd be able to represent himself as a cis woman as well.

Your point about media portrayal is still fair, I just think it's justified in Claire's case.
(This is irrelevant, but I *did* notice that, from her first appearance in comic 2203, she's gotten *Significantly* more adorable. (At least, physically and in my personal opinion.) Chalk this up to Jeph not knowing how to draw her yet.

Since she's a grad student, unless she has a lot of money from other sources, surgeries are quite unlikely. They're hella expensive (something that upsets me irl). In MA, insurances are required to cover SRS nd breast implants, but they can often weasel out of it by loopholes. So she may have had some done, it isn't entirely impossible. Not that I want to dwell on the surgeries much--too much focus is placed on that with trans folks.

I dunno. I just think that I'd enjoy the portrayal of Marten and Claire's relationship if they had to experience some of the actual hardships of dating a transwoman. The stigma against it, dealing with morning facial hair--the first time a partner sees you without makeup. For a slice of life comic, it seems unrealistic to not include some of it, though that's really Jeph's purview.

Bear in mind that many writers tend to keep themselves reined in on certain topics, not because they do not want to or do not respect those who might be connected but because they feel that they might not be able do the topic the justice it deserves. It might be one thing to introduce a character who is trans, but to capture the sense of the daily struggle they go through without making it look like something from an after school special can be quite difficult. I can't speak for Jeph with regards to his story, so who knows.

... but I'm not sure how to make my cell phone take a video of itself.
Oh, that's easy; you just use your other cellphone.

Or a mirror.
Also Clinton's hand is intended to have a sim-flesh covering.

In olden times, we used to have a primitive device called a camera. You couldn't use them read online comics or like the latest Facebook meme, but they took pretty good photos and videos.

Most of my cameras don't do video.  Only stills.  One even only takes single sheets of film at a time.

Oh, yeah, I have a camera. It's right next to my rotary phone and my 8-track player.

And now you are living in a world where your camera is your rotary phone and your 8-track player.

Sort of.
