Intelligent toasters might also hate your guts and purposefully burn down the bar.
Then the toaster better either A. be ambulatory, or B. have a death wish.

Or C.- Have a hardened AI drive and be willing to move to a different chassis after the toaster one gets destroyed.

Whatever happened, nice foreshadowing on Jeph's part with the Titanic/iceberg image.

My brain helpfully supplied a mental image of a harpoon being fired through the window of a steamed up carriage.

I appreciate "let us enjoy it in fiction", but I also don't think it's good to set a precedent of "to be happy, a trans woman must be X, Y, and Z", you know?

Without being ridiculous - and I do ask this as a question, not a statement posed as one - but by this measure, wouldn't any happy relationship a transperson was involved in automatically set a precedent that you 'must be x, y and z' to be happy, regardless of what 'x, y and z' were?

Thank you for your perspective (and awesome username), Persephiroth! Welcome to the forum.

Also I just noticed that Clinton is one of those strange people that delete their texts. Either that or he's never texted or been texted by Claire before.

Wait, what?  There are people who don't delete their texts?   :-o

That's .. huh.  I'd have said 'crazy' but I guess all it warrants is 'inconvenient and poor judgment.'

Why on earth would you keep old texts around?

Did a bit of sleuthing in an effort to determine which bar Clinton burned down. Turns out there is no corresponding real-life bar in Northampton.

The bus that goes from Northampton to Amherst is route Blue 43. There are three major stops for it in Northampton. None of them has a bar that close to it. The closest bar to any of the bus stops is the Dirty Truth, the RL analogue of the Horrible Revelation - but it's almost two blocks away and Clinton definitely wasn't there. Nor does there appear to be a nautical-themed bar in RL Northampton.

I figure that most should be deleted, but I don't bother.  If nothing else, they're a useful memory aid to a previous conversation (I don't always trust my own recall).  I think that if I *did* start deleting texts, that'd be indicative of cutting a person out of my life.

Assuming the night turned into an impromptu date between Clinton and the bar lady, or at least something close to that, and considering Clinton's last date, things are certainly escalating.

Let's hope his next date doesn't end with a nuclear disaster somewhere...

Response to Persephiroth

Hannelore lives with OCD.

Jeph introduced Hannelore in #515, she declared her OCD in 520, and she presents to the rest of the characters as 'high functioning', most of the time.
It wasn't until #959 that Jeph showed us what tribulations Hannelore goes through to be herself.
He said in that day's news post that he'd scripted that story in advance, but didn't show it to us until his drawing skill was up to it.

Claire is a trans woman.

Jeph introduced Claire in #2203.
Claire came out to Marten, and us the home viewers in #2323
Caire presented to us, and the rest of the QC characters, 'passing'.

If Jeph intends on doing a "here's what Claire has to go through to be herself" comic, then he'll do it when he feels he can do a proper job of it.

Yes, though I think it is an odd habit. In the same way, some people don't clean out the "trash bin" on their computers either. Personally, I delete my all my texts as I go, keeping them only as long as they are needed.

I suspect that the fire will become a "noodle incident", but I wonder why the bartenders clothes got burned off while Clinton's didn't. Presumably the fire started behind the bar?

As the comic says, it did start behind the bar, but she's also depicted as wearing clothes.

However, she's wearing clothes that aren't particularly well suited to the climate - seeing as she lived upstairs, she probably never felt the need to dress warmly, not having to go outside. So, blanket to cover her.

Strip is up earlier than expected.  Still don't know how the fire started, but it wasn't due to any friction between Clinton and the bar lady.

Surprise!  Welcome to the New QC!  Next week, Bar Lady (wait, does she have a name yet?) moves in with Clinton, and the real comic begins.

Save for the occasional cameo appearance, Marten is never seen again.

It's a college dormitory so I don't think that would be permitted.  Perhaps she and Bubbles should get an apartment.  They both have the same temperament.

Well, that's quite a bit different. Trash is trash. Duplicate files, incomplete files, superseded files, etc. Texts are communication records, and you never know when prior communications will be important.

At first it seemed like her punctuated syntax was to make a point, but it continues to be odd. It seems likely that English is a second language for the bartender. I wonder where she's from?

Well, this post turned out to be more relevant than we realised. Ten points to Griffindore.

And I just wanted to repeat what someone mentioned previously... the blanket is most likely there as a part of treatment for shock. Not because her clothes burned off (don't think she'd be just standing around if that had happened). Not because she lost her coat (Clinton isn't wearing one either).

Regarding the texts thing... it may seem like an odd habit to leave old texts lying around (nitpick: it's a lack of habit really). But, unlike the PC recycling bin, I don't think the phone will run out of memory due to accumulated texts any time soon.

See, I think it's an odd habit to delete texts (not counting deleting specific texts for w/e reason). I get doing it when you had to in the pre-smartphone era, but if you don't have to, why would you? Texts are a long running conversation, why would you erase the messages as they come?

OK, last two words of the comic.

Did Queequeg misinterpret Clinton's statement as an offer/request?

Yeah, I know, she's just acknowledging his sympathetic expression, but it read a little oddly for a moment.  Just long enough for me to have that thought.

Huh. That's really interesting how different phone habits can be. In the past 5 years, I don't think I've ever once considered deleting a text. Sure, a decade ago there were space limits, but storage is now effectively infinite as far as texts go, so I can't really think of a reason to bother with doing it. My perplexity at deleting them matches your own at not doing so :)

Conversely, I'm very aggressive about archiving emails, but mostly because I use it as a todo list.

Hey! I just had a thought - What if she OWNED the Bar?!

If she lived above the bar, and worked there, and felt comfortable giving out free drinks... she probably did.

That said, it seems pretty presumptuous of Clinton to offer to walk her home.  I know the crowd looked pretty skeevy, but there must be at least one of them she's come to trust more than some high-strung teetotal rando.

I wouldn't have said presumptuous. I mean, I wouldn't refrain from offering on the assumption that someone else must have offered. It's just the decent thing to do.

Security?

Anyone who steals my phone and reads my texts will only achieve getting bored to death and giving me extra time to recover or disable it. Do you really send sensitive information via txt?

I wouldn't assume that deleted texts can't be recovered by a sufficiently motivated person. That would be somewhat naive.

Did someone order toast? With a regular toaster as I would suppose intelligent toasters won't burn down bars.
I don't want any toast.
He doesn't want any toast.
No one around here wants any toast.
Not now, not ever.
No toast.
My friend here wants some toast.
And I'll have 4 fried chickens and a coke!

I immediately stopped deleting my text messages when I came into the 21st century with a phone that doesn't have limited SMS capacity. Honestly, what's the point? It's tedious to delete the messages as they come, and it's served me well more than once to be able to scroll back through a conversation for details, or an amusing photo or some such, instead of asking for it again.

WRT the comic, no way are they moving in together. Clinton is still at school, living in the dorms, with a roommate. However, I wouldn't shy away from the betting odds that she somehow ends up staying with another member of the cast. If she ends up living with Clinton, that's just going to be completely trite. A newly-spun rehashing of the entire Marten/Faye storyline in its original days.

My question is why would you keep texts?

Texts are a long running conversation,

Not necessarily.  And following that logic, do you make and keep recordings of all spoken conversations you have?

Quote
why would you erase the messages as they come?

Because they have served their purpose and are now rubbish.  Why would I want a six-month-past reminder of a dental appointment?  Why would I keep a message from someone saying where they are waiting for me or that they are running late?  I suppose that if I ever said or heard something genuinely important by text I might consider keeping it (probably by transferring it to some more suitable medium), but in nearly 20 years of mobile phone use that has never arisen.

I don´t think the bar belongs belonged to mighty eyebrows girl. Her attitude is more like that of a clerk who doesn´t give a shit about his job beause she hates it anyway. But that leaves the question why she was living upstairs. Maybe she was living there anyway and only started working at the bar because that´s incredibly convenient.

I don´t delete my texts either. But I used the old Android of my 16-year old daughter when my iPhone was damaged. And I found more than 3GB of old WhatsApp data in the memory. Mostly pictures and short videos. WA doesn´t automaticaly delete those unless you tell it to. So if you run out of memory (and I did) you should check the memory used by your messenger apps and maybe change the settings.

Yeah, it sounds as if there was a short circuit in the beer pumps that ignited a pool of spilt spirits. With all those accelerants lying around, a fire behind the bar would turn into an inferno in pretty short order.

So, now Barlady is jobless and homeless. Indeed, it is quite possible that she's lost absolutely everything that she owns except the clothes on her back and they probably aren't going to be in the best shape. If she is the owner/operator and the bar turns out to have been not up-to-code, then she may not get much, if anything, from her insurer. She is right to be in shock; she's starting utter destitution in the face. I'm wondering how she'll react when the shock wears off and reality hits home?

So, what next? I figure that Clinton will try to help her. Likely, he'll beg Marten and Claire to put her up on the couch fora night or two. Long term, she is going to need a lot of help to get back on her feet.

Some jobs come with a room. Barlady might also have doubled as 24-hour on-call cleaner, watch person and delivery receiver.

And on the conversational topic

I clear out my Texts usually once a week.  No point in hanging on to them beyond that if there's notthing you need to 'Call Back' on.

Anyone who steals my phone and reads my texts will only achieve getting bored to death and giving me extra time to recover or disable it. Do you really send sensitive information via txt?

Anyone who steals my phone will have to be able to crack the crypto first.  Additionally, I treat any form of communication w/o end-to-end encryption to be about as private as a postcard.

Delurking again...

I'm kinda surprised people delete their texts. I keep them on the phone, mostly because I see no point in bothering to delete them, but I also *like* to have a history of conversations with a person. Most texts are inconsequential, but I still sometimes return to an older exchange, if nothing else - to remember when it occurred or to check a certain detail.

Granted, I'm the guy who, at the time I was a frequent IRC user, would keep the log of every single conversation I had. I just *like* to keep a record of my communication. Pretty much the only thing I delete are spam e-mails, but I tend to keep the regular ones.

Honestly, I don't see any benefit from deleting an older message...

Maybe it's that I didn't start texting until a few years ago (like, three, maybe?).  Maybe it's that I *still* don't text much.  Both of those lead to I have never had problems with storage capacity.

I didn't even know I *could* delete old texts until this conversation.

Over on the Subreddit, someone has suggested that Barlady's name will be Irene 'Ira' Browse. Her mother's name was Mona Browse.
