HANNELORE: "Don't be shy, Bubbles! Tell me what your greatest wish is!"

BUBBLES: "I dream of a world where people, biological and synthetic alike, are free to be whatever they wish to be; a world where people are judged by who they are, not what they are. Most of all, I dream of being able to enjoy my tea in peace without Faye's continual posteriorical one-liners."

If Bubbles does have a tattoo dating back to military service days she wouldn't know what the story behind it was.

Unless the tattoo is a QR code that contains a link to a backup memory ... ?

FAYE: "Die Krokiis - Es ist die wahre angelegenheit!"

I assume that's supposed to mean smth. like: "It's the real thing/business"? It's not wrong grammatically, but it sounds weird. Sounds like 'Google-translate German', which is ... very, very 'special', and a source of amusement for native speakers.

IMO, German vocabulary doesn't have as many synonyms as the English one - and even when there's overlap between meaning, there tends to be more difference in nuance. Like "Angelegenheit" does have connotations of 'thing', or 'matter', but it's better suited for a formal context than an ad. And 'wahr' means 'true' rather than 'originally' - Germans would rather use smth. like  'echt' in that context.

P.S.: I think it's supposed to be 'Die Kroichs' rather than 'Die Krokiis' - the latter sounds like a show about a family of happy crocodiles invented by Nickelodeon

GT anything is a bit "special", nicht wahr? GT Chinese certainly is.

I had no success identifying the beer(?) that Faye is drinking.

It's supposed to be German for "The Cross", a reference to "La Croix", a brand of bottled water in the U.S.

Ah... Thank you. You got to the crux of the matter. But the German for cross (n) is Kreuz.

And I suppose water would be better for Faye than beer.

FWIW - "Kroich" is a German family name, that apparantly shares a common root with 'Krug' (jar, tankard).

Like many (many!) German family names, it's an (indirect) reference to an occupation, or possibly a noteworthy peculiarity of the person it is applied to - so it could refer to somebody whose job had to do with tankards in some way: making them, trading them or using them (a barkeep).

It could also refer to a notorious drunk.

TL;DR - It means jar, pitcher, mug or tankard, or people that deal with them in any capacity. Nothing to do with crosses.

So, 'Birchhoffer' (sp?) would probably be someone who tends to an arboretum. Gotcha.

I've got an ex who's last name was Voellmecke. Any idea what that one means?

Not sure if I butchered 'Birchhoffer'. It was the name of one of my teachers in 6th grade, and he told us it meant something akin to "house of trees".

Voellmecke is a surname stemming from the diminutive of the given name Volmer/Volmar or Volkmar.

Volkmar in turn is an Old-high-German name meaning "Famous amongst the people" - Volk=folc=people and mar/Mari= famous.

Those Old-high-German names are always something like "Bonecrusher the feared, bane of his enemies" (my own middle name, Elmar, comes from Eigilmar, which means "famous sword"), apparently nobody back then called themselves "Hubert, cleaner of linen".
