Okay, so a simple poll for this week: Who is your current favourite focus characters?

I've kept the options to the characters who are the primary focus right now. So, characters like Hannelore, Dora, Marten and Claire don't appear as they've moved to secondary or even background characters right now. Notice that Faye appears with Bubbles because the two aren't likely to appear separately anymore.

How did I vote? In no particular order:
  • Beepatrice - Possibly because I identify a bit with her when I'm out of my comfort zone at work;
  • Roko - What can I say? She's attractive and she has lots of interesting characterisation wrinkles!
  • Renee - Because I think that we're about to start on a major character arc  that could be at least as transformative as Faye's.[/li[]
Don't forget that you have three votes to cast!

Elliot: Because I want him to find love, dang it!
Renee: Her character is getting fleshed out more, and I want to see where she is going
Yay: I get the feeling that they will be getting more prominent soon - not sure why

Hi again Lemon.

Poor Roko, she does need therapy, and lots of it.

Side note: the new chassis has mellowed May out already. Volunteering to help out Beeps and May, acknowledging others as friends... Let's see if this continues once her body loses that 'new chassis' smell.

Well, at least Roko's holding it together a bit better this time. No attempted severing of her face yet.

I voted for:

Clinton - I identify with him in pretty much every way you can think of.
Elliot - He's a really nice guy to pretty much everyone; he deserves to be happy.
Yay - I want to know more about how a superintelligent AI with ultrapowerful sensory capacities interacts with the human world. Also, backstory? romantic interests? Overall, they're just a really interesting character (and I love the fashion sense).

I sort of like the faint double-image/out of focus effect Jeph is using to show the massive stress that Roko is feeling. It's a little hard to say "like" for something that shows the pain a decent character is dealing with.  I'm uncomfortably reminded of the way I felt in high-school, in a classroom with twice as many kids as it was designed for, desperately fighting the urge to run out of the room screaming (undiagnosed severe social anxiety disorder).

My votes went for:

Roko - because holy crap does she deserve much better developments to come her way, and I cannot recall another character who has ever made me so dearly want to jump into the pages and give them as big of a hug as is reasonably possible.
Elliot - because he's a kind, decent and caring person, and I identify all too well with the same anxiety around dating/relationships.
Faye & Bubbles - because relatively stable loving relationship, and ... I guess because I didn't like the rest of the list.

May, because May.
Milli, because in a way she sort of feels like a callback to the early days of the comic.
Beeps, because she has a sly side to her clumsy normal self.

This is a really hard poll right now:- Right now, I put Roko and Beepatrice because Roko has my sympathy and is still fighting her problem as hard as she can - and Beeps because she is showing the depth of character she's been hiding behind a ditsy exterior   :-D
But I could also have put May because she's showing that this ugly little seed is capable of growing and blossoming ( whether it continues or not is a matter for debate   :-\ ) - also Clinton because of the growing he has already been doing - and Elliot for taking his courage in both hands and going for it - and Renee for being the "Mom friend" when her friends need it - and Brun because she always makes me smile, if not laugh outright...

So, yeah, it seems to really depend on the situation at the time - it'll probably change again next week!

Oh, and the third one? My "other"?
Marten - yep, the old original protagonist, simply because I could always identify with him

May really has changed. She's enjoying the experience of life for the first time and, even though she's still a goblin, I think that she's at least going to be a more positive personality going forwards. I'm not sure if that will make her less annoying to know! I mean, just think about Pintsize!

I know that Roko doesn't want to be considered sick and she doesn't want everyone else to know about the problems she's having. However, these episodes are too frequent and come on too easily to the point where they're a danger to her. As kooky as Lemon can be, she is a proper therapist and might be able to help. Roko needs that help before she starts seriously damaging herself, either on a hardware or software level.

Side note: the new chassis has mellowed May out already. Volunteering to help out Beeps and May, acknowledging others as friends... Let's see if this continues once her body loses that 'new chassis' smell.

Last week I noted that May had probably been in the AI equivalent of constant pain. So, in a lot of ways, she's feeling liberated and with a new lease of life! So, yeah, she's feeling great and wants to embrace life with a new sense of positivity. Whilst that's good to see, I'm sure that combining that with her personal interests might be annoying for some!

Well, I guess that answers my question from last week. Roko didn't come back to explore other therapeutic options because she didn't think it would do any good. (To be fair, Lemon's previous attempt at counseling her wouldn't inspire much confidence in anyone). But I really hope Lemon does have something that can help Roko - a referral to a body adjustment therapist/specialist maybe?

It's also nice to see Beeps showing sense and discretion here.

I sort of like the faint double-image/out of focus effect Jeph is using to show the massive stress that Roko is feeling. I think it's a highly effective way of visualising her strain to us. So I like it a lot in that regard - not in the sense that it means Roko is suffering.

A poll for favourite character that doesn't mention Hanners is very weird to me.

I'm also confused as to why Bubbles & Faye can't be voted on individually.

Because Hanners, like Marten and Claire, is hardly ever in the strip anymore. Even Jeph calls him the former protagonist! As I explained, you don't get Bubbles OR Faye these days, only Bubbles AND Faye.

So what? Just because they only appear together, doesn't mean you can't have one of them as a favourite.

Because Hanners, like Marten and Claire, is hardly ever in the strip anymore. Even Jeph calls him the former protagonist!

Wait, who are we discussing now?

I am quite confident that we have not seen the last of Hanners. She is waaaay too popular to be abandoned.

Edit: Also, former protagonist (I assume you confused my post with jwhouk's in the middle of writing and switched to Marten there) does not mean former cast member.

2nd edit: Maybe you shouldn't choose people's favourites for them, is what I'm suggesting.

Because, if anyone had bothered to read my opening post, they would have seen that this is a poll who is the favourite of the current regular cast. Not their all-time favourites. This is clear and I cannot be held responsible if people look at the poll and see what they want to see, not what is actually there.

Yeah, I saw.

Okay, so a simple poll for this week: Who is your current favourite focus characters?

I've kept the options to the characters who are the primary focus right now. So, characters like Hannelore, Dora, Marten and Claire don't appear as they've moved to secondary or even background characters right now.

Regardless. I still think that a poll like this that excludes Hanners is weird. That was just my reaction. She still feels like a central cast member to me even if she doesn't appear as frequently as some others.

And while I'm repeating myself, Bubbles and Faye, despite being glued at the hips, remain separate individuals that can be liked by readers together or individually.

I ascribe the episodes akin to epileptic seizures [the normal small ones and not ganmal] where they try very hard to hide it from the people around them andslink off somewhere to get it over with.
It is never a good thing and having at least one person with you who you trust makes for a world of difference with the situation.
Fortunately she has two with her of which one is qualified and the other supportive.  :psyduck:

if Jeph wanted to screw over May:
Roko has to switch bodies, has to go with a way cheaper one, retroactively loses her BodyHub points, May then can't afford the Josefina

i don't think that's going to happen but for the sake of conspiracies...
.....How does that constitute a conspiracy?

well, a conspiracy-like train of thought? i dunno. i think it's possible but not likely, but maybe that's just me being optimistic for May's sake.

The potted succulents are whispering among themselves. I sense a conspiracy brewing!

that's strange. is it a foreshadow of some kind?

Regardless. I still think that a poll like this that excludes Hanners is weird. That was just my reaction. She still feels like a central cast member to me even if she doesn't appear as frequently as some others.
I respectfully disagree. She's a popular character, but she isn't part of any of the current main two-plus-one storylines (Roko's dissociation, the Elliot/Clinton/Brun/Mille romantic tangle, and May's new body). I actually think Melon doesn't belong in the poll either. She's too one-dimensional to be a major figure.

(I'm sure I'm missing storylines here, and I've omitted others--Dora and Tai's wedding, for example--because they haven't been touched in months.)
And while I'm repeating myself, Bubbles and Faye, despite being glued at the hips, remain separate individuals that can be liked by readers together or individually.
I do agree with this. Dora and Tai almost never appear apart anymore, yet they have wildly different personalities. Same with Marten and Claire, Veronica and Jim, etc. I don't think it's fair to call them "[essentially the same character]."

What do you mean?

You're a CS grad, right? How difficult would it be for you to write a smartphone-app that could infer the user's height from, say, the users' shadow upon a wall if the wall's height and relative position of the lightsource is know?

[Insert here any other method you can come up with to infer world-coordinates from measurements routinely accessible to a humdrum-ordinary real-world smartphone - There's freeware motion-capture apps that give decent results using a kinnect's sensors or a bunch of webcams. Other's can turn your smartphone into a 6DoF motion-tracker using the build-in acceleration sensors and its camera for drift-correction.  IIRC, Google routinely supplements GPS positioning data used by Google-maps by triangulating signal runtimes of known local wifi-hotspots. Your own eyes & brain do triangulation using data from the muscles orienting your peepers.]

AIs aren't computers, and most of their 'computing power' goes into maintaining their sentience.

We've been over this.

Also, if AIs have this ability to look at people and accurately determine their height, then what does the quality of their chassis have to do with it?

Comic's up.

Aha, Beeps and Lemon are acquainted with each other. That should provide some backstory :) Lemon is correct though - that tracking software is very creepy and invasive.

I wonder if Lemon knows how to uninstall it? Like, can you jailbreak a chassis and use a different operating system? I have no idea what implications that would have for a sentient being “born” in one operating system tho?

In lieu of the Robot College spin-off comic that I know we aren’t going to get (due to there only being one of Jeph and 24 hours in a day), we need at least a couple of flashbacks to the sorority house where Beeps and Lemon lived.

I suspect the anti-damage and this program were almost certainly created by human beings.

Which is... interesting, I guess.

I was just rereading "Debt" by David Graeber, since he died earlier this month, and I had this page open while I read your comment;

Quote
Modern ideas of rights and liberties are derived from what came to be known as “natural rights theory”—from the time when Jean Gerson, Rector of the University of Paris, began to lay them out around 1400, building on Roman law concepts. As Richard Tuck, the premier historian of such ideas, has long noted, it is one of the great ironies of history that this was always a body of theory embraced not by the progressives of that time, but by conservatives. “For a Gersonian, liberty was property and could be exchanged in the same way and in the same terms as any other property”—sold, swapped, loaned, or otherwise voluntarily surrendered. It followed that there could be nothing intrinsically wrong with, say, debt peonage, or even slavery. And this is exactly what natural-rights theorists came to assert. In fact, over the next centuries, these ideas came to be developed above all in Antwerp and Lisbon, cities at the very center of the emerging slave trade.
[...]
Just as lawyers have spent a thousand years trying to make sense of Roman property concepts, so have philosophers spent centuries trying to understand how it could be possible for us to have a relation of domination over ourselves. The most popular solution—to say that each of us has something called a “mind” and that this is completely separate from something else, which we can call “the body,” and that the first thing holds natural dominion over the second—flies in the face of just about everything we now know about cognitive science. It’s obviously untrue, but we continue to hold onto it anyway, for the simple reason that none of our everyday assumptions about property, law, and freedom would make any sense without it.

AI's kind of exist in a place where what is a legal-fiction for humans is literal. What is, for us, a relic of our definitions of rights and property coming from (again in Graeber's words) defining a relationship between two people where one was also property, a thing - manifests when the mind can be housed in a different body chassis, which is property.

So that's cool, interesting and terrible.

But it also makes a really interesting case the other way; It's interesting to consider that most of this forum's users' legal frameworks essentially see us as AI who can't change bodies. So human laws probably weirdly protect AIs because that's how we (wrongly) conceive of humans!
