i've been on this cd-buying spasm lately.

ani difranco - knuckle down
love it, love it, love it. i think she gets better with each passing album. i still say dilate is my favorite, but this one is definitely amazing.

belle and sebastian - if you're feeling sinister and sing jonathan david
again, love love love love! i've only listened to them once each, but i enjoyed them.

bright eyes - letting off happiness, i'm wide awake, it's morning and digital ash in a digital urn
i haven't actually listened to letting off happiness yet. regarding the others, both are good, but i definitely prefer i'm wide awake... i feel like i need a specific reason to listen to digital ash as opposed to just listening to it.

mirah - advisory commitee
can i just say that she's got the cutest voice this side of the besties? i bought it for my mom, i thought she'd enjoy it, but she has yet to hear it...maybe over break, provided i feel like giving it to her.

(i'll just burn her a copy. this one's totally mine.)

rufus wainwright - poses
why i never bought this one when it came out escapes me. and now i'm addicted. *scrambles back the store to buy the other rufus cds*

'tis unhealthy.

Ooh, ooh! We got a bunch of new CDs in Montreal a few weeks ago. Here are the ones I can remember:
Fiery Furnaces - EP
Death From Above 1979 - You're a Woman, I'm a Machine
Beck - Mutations
Bjork - Debut (I think? I forget)
The Frames - Burn the Maps
The Magnetic Fields - I

And that is all I can remember but I think we got some more, too. Montreal generally has very good music stores.

EDIT: And something by Broken Social Scene that my brother hasn't given me yet...

A couple days ago I picked up:

Killing Joke - Pandemonium
MC 900 Ft Jesus - Welcome to My Dream

The Killing Joke is good, as all the KJ albums I've heard are.  The MC 900 Ft Jesus album is not the one with "If I Only Had a Brain" on it, if anyone was going to ask.

i was in a bit ov an old-school jazz/swing mood this weekend, so...

Glenn Miller : a String ov Pearls
= pure awesome.  there's not much else i can say about it.  if you don't undertsand the sheer awesomeness ov glenn miller, you probably never will.

Miles Davis
some random compilation without a title, and with very little informtaion.  it annoys me the way this tends to be done with jazz, swing, and other similar musicians.  but it's mostly songs i didn't already have, and it was cheap.

Miles Davis : Birds ov Paradise
basickally the same situation as the above.  good stuff.

I finally bought the new arcade fire album (funeral). It is pretty good but overrated in my opinion. I guess it would be hard not to be though with the rediculous amount of hype around it. So I am kind of dissapointed it is not a juggernaut of awesomeness.

Maybe I just don't like music anymore. I haven't been able to fall in love with any of the albums I've bought in a long time.

Six Organs of Admittance-Compathia
Found this used and thought I'd check it out. Really calm late night folk though the last track has some incredibly loud electric guitar on it. Nice overall but maybe not quite worth all the hype this guys gotten.

Steel Pole Bathtub-Scars From Falling Down
This album knows what it wants to do, beat you over the head. Its basically grunge but with too much sludge and feeback for your average listener. Very monotone, though the lyrics are alright and it certainly manages to accomplish its aims.

I felt the need to resurrect a near-dead thread and take stock of the many, many albums (and singles) I acquired today...

Albums:
Fiascherspooner - Odyssey
Daft Punk - Human After All
The Rogers Sisters - Three Fingers
Ambulance Ltd - LP
The Mountain Goats - The Sunset Tree
Four Tet - Everything Ecstatic
I Am Kloot - Gods and Monsters
Moby - Hotel
The Glitterati - self titled
The National - Alligator
King Creosote - Rocket DIY
and, er...
Ocean Colour Scene - A Hyperactive Workout for the flying squad.

Singles:
Razorlight - Somewhere Else
Ian Broudie - Smoke rings
Do Me Bad Things - what's hideous
Electralane - Bells/Keep Losing Heart
Rilo Kiley - Portions for Foxes
Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger
Hard Fi - Tied up too tight
Kid Carpet - tired and lonesome
Clor - Love and Pain
Dead Fly Buchowski - Russian Doll
and...
Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc.

The really really cool thing about this is that they were all free...haven't had a chance to listen to them all yet, but if my insomnia prevails, then I should be able to feedback tomorrow...

Fly Pan Am-N'Ecoutez Pas LP
This reminds me of when I bought Can's Tago Mago and My Bloody Valentine's Loveless on the same day. The inate strangeness this record exuded caused me to stay up until 3AM writing really odd poetry. The album goes all over the place though it is anchored by steady Motorik drum and bass rhythms and quite a few samples of crowd chatter which seem to pop up randomly. Really I just can't digest it all and I need to listen to it a whole bunch more times.

Bedhead-What Fun Life Was LP
This record sounds like it was recorded in a windowless dimly lit room on a day when the band didn't care what time it was or what the weather was  because they were too down. yet, somehow it still rocks. The band manage to build up massive grandoise sweeps of guitar that nonetheless sound shaky and brittle like they could fall face down on the concrete at any moment. The singers melancholy gravel pit voice only acts as a mood setter most of the time as the words are drowned out or mumbled with only a few phrases left intellidgible, all of them of a depressing nature. Rock bottom rock for when slocore is just too slow.

Charalambides-IN CR EA SE DLP
Only listened to the first half of this so far. It's a pretty good drift but vocalist Cristina Carter doesn't sing quiet enough but when she does it sounds really good, her voice blending into the music in a way I haven't heard before probably something to do with the situation of the recording.

Good grief...Just listened to the Maximo Park cd (which turned out to be an album), and it sounds like a slightly less jerky Futureheads, but like The Futureheads all the same, with a small dose of libertines, and not at all unique. I'm not one to demand total originality, but it's pretty poor show to completely ape a band who are so  now it actually hurts, and do it badly. Grrr.

On the upside, Ambulance Ltd's album is really good, sort of woozy, melancholic indie pop, a bit like My Bloody Valentine in places, but better.

Dead Fly Buchowski are a bit to noise-without-structure,
The new Razorlight song is annoying as fuck,
and I already knew I liked Rilo Kiley.

Kaiser Chiefs - Employment
Various Artists - Then Came Rock 'n' Roll (double vinyl)

The first is wonderfully enjoyable, and necessary as I'm seeing them later this month (hometown show! Woo!)

The latter I got for £2 in Oxfam and is chock full of great 50s rock n roll songs  by the likes of Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and the great Little Richard. Gawd bless.

Now I need some Elliott Smith and Books, and the new Modey Lemon is out next month...

Billy Sheehan - Cosmic Troubador (signed by Billy and with a pick!)
Holy shit is this album awesome. All the reasons why i'm a bass player is in this CD. Just excellent musicianship all over this album.

Eric Sardinas - Black Pearls
I haven't had a chance to listen to this one yet. But juding by his live show, it has to be a nice blend of blues and rock.

Both bought at the Steve Vai show i went to tonight.

Dead Poetic - Four Wall Blackmail
Dead Poetic - New Medicines
Crossfade - Self-titled

i was going to get a spineshank album but i would have to order it and that would take like 2 weeks so i got: The Butterfly Effect - Begins Here.

i doubt any of you have heard The Butterfly Effect since they are an australian band and to my knowledge haven't done anything international, but you can get a sample of their music on their site, i seriously suggest checking them out.
