I tend to get, "zif we'd listen to your crappy music"

I tend to play up my love for metal a bit just to see what reactions i'll get, can be quite amusing (death metal voice) RWOAR DEATH METAL!!

but musically i tend not to go that hardcore, too much screaming

Just listened to that Panda song.

Haha, they totally stole that bit from Akira with the dolls. And put crap, listless guitar underneath it.

I do not know the Panda song.  But I feel that I am missing something....

Also, I get a lot of "What language IS this anyway?"  But bear in mind, I listen to a lot of Japanese and some Russian.

And then my friends typically sing along when it's broadway musical stuff or TMBG.

Am I wrong, or is the music from Avenue Q some brilliant stuff?

Always! I saw Ave Q last summer, it's brilliant. The actual music isn't at Sondheim levels of brilliant or anything, but damn if it isn't catchy and witty! Definitely one of the best shows out there right now.

I just downloaded that panda song out of curiousity, and I must say...pandas deserve a much better song than this.

My taste in music is resulted in a major ass kicking for myself, though I appear to be an emo kid, I am not, but that doesn't stop local punks from throughing cigs at me. My taste is pretty strange, my favorite bands are, Operation Ivy, The Cure, Audio Karate, Arcade Fire, The Germs, Orange, and Last Plea for Sanity, all are not connected so well...

One thing that I forgot to note in my original post that I really do not appreciate is when people tell me that I listen to such and such a style of music or band "just to be cool." What the hell is that? Does anyone else have to deal with this sort of reaction? I guess the thinking is that since the person I'm talking to hasn't heard the bands I like, I must think that I am cooler than they are just because I like obscure bands. I don't understand this; they're the one assuming things about me based on what sort of music I like, not me! Seriously, if you honestly think you're cooler than someone because you listen to hip indie bands instead of popular music, you're a giant asshole. But if assume that people who listen to unpopular music do so for any different ("more cool") reasons than the rest of the world, then you're ridiculous, and should probably put off buying any music until you've finished reading "I'm OK, You're OK."

Actually, I'm more inclined to say that some people who listen to popular music listen to it just to be cool.
I'm also inclined to think that half of the depressed teens out there who wear makeup and crap are like that because they think 'this is how people who listen to the kind of music I like act' so, that theory's not a very popular one.

Yeah, but you can say the same thing for any type of music. Percentage-wise the number of people who listen to it for reasons other than actual appreciation of the music will be much the same across the board, apart from swells caused by fads and fashion.

My sister calls my music stupid then turns up her Disney's Cinderella Soundtrack or Aqua or what-crap-have-you. She's 18.

I'm all "Stupid? You're listening to the fucking Cinderella soundtrack."
"CINDERELLA IS NOT STUPID."

She had murder in her eyes when she said that.

Would you mind terribley if I killed her? 18 year olds that can't tell the difference between good and bad music should be wiped off the face of the earth before they have a chance to reproduce. I'm usually not this harsh, especially towards people's musical tastes, but AQUA? *Shudder*

Haha, I dunno about my co-workers, but my coffee-house customers don't seem to like how my musical tastes show in my appearance. Since I have dyed black hair and 1/2" tunnels they automatically assume I'm some sort of unholy devil latte woman. I actually remember some woman asking me if I listened to Korn because she said I looked like her son's girlfriend. I got offended. Very offended. Korn sucks.

I tend to get the same responses as the other metal fans here.

"How the hell do you know what they're saying?"

"Its just yelling and jumping on guitars"

"Death metal? Like Disturbed and Slipknot?"

The funniest reaction was in a care ride to the mall with some newly aquanted friends of mine. We just barely had started to hang out and I had a mix CD in. It started out with the Aquabats and Catch 22, but the third song was  'My Feral Fucktoy' by Fuck...I'm Dead.

Yea, I got a weird look from every one in the car. It was great. I <3 my ska and goregrind mix.

I have a [ton of] badge on my messenger bag.  (how emo)

It says "You will hate my music." and has an emo kid holding a stereo.
People do what the badge says.

Well, I am the youngest at 23, the next youngest and coincedently my favorite coworker is 30.  Aside from her the rest are a bunch of 50+ year old dudes who are pretty nice guys but they are pretty dated as far as music and some attitudes.

From my friends - blank stares and raised eyebrows. I'm always reminded I can't talk music with them. It's extremely frustrating.

I wear endless shit from my friends about my music.

About Future Sound Of London: "Hey, man, I think you got ripped off. You bought this thinking it was *music*"
About Autechre: "How do you pronounce it? Awtokremermoofnig?"
Hell, not even a bit of honest indie got a favourable reaction (OK, it was Blueberry Boat): "You know, I don't think I'll ever understand your taste in music"

My father had nicer things to say, and he's the classical music snob from way back.

Autechre and FSOL?  Consider yourself lucky.  Accidentally including Haujobb in a mix when my Top 40 loving friends were over was not fun.  They honestly thought that something was wrong with my computer.

Add to that the fact that I'm still not over Massive Attack's Blue Lines, sometimes have dreams where Funeral is the theme song, occasionally furtively listen to Offspring's Smash when I think noone is looking, think that Cesaria Evora was touched by some higher power, wiggle rythmically to Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, and have underinformed but profound appreciations for things done to a piano by both Miles Davis and Martha Argerich . . . well let's just say that I'm a musical mess.

My policy is that whenever I find someone who likes any 10 albums I like, I feel fortunate, and start inviting them to shows.

What is up with Haujobb, anyway? People tell me its industrial. Well, no. That's not quite true. I don't actually know anyone who has ever heard of Haujobb. The internet tells me they are industrial, but I've got Ninetynine, and that album is most definetly ambient. So, like, are their other albums different, or is it industrial ambient, or what? It confuses me.

On a more relevant note, I was told "Hah, you're listening to classical music, you pussy" by some retards while I was playing Hajnal by Venetian Snares. 3 minutes later it dropped into the breakcore, and they were actually scared. It was beautiful. It was on portable speakers too, so they didn't even get the full bass effect, the pussies.
