They hiatus'd on my birthday.  Ah, that about wrecked my day.

Harsh. It was bad enough for most Blink fans, but on your birthday? I feel for you. Also, it's cool that we seem to have taste in music in common as well as all that stuff from the "10 random facts about you" thread.

Quote from: Gryff
I also must admit that that Kelly Clarkson song (I think we're all talking about the same one...) "Since U Been Gone", despite using txt speak, which is retarded, was poptastic. Also "Toxic" by Britney Spears.

Yeah, I like that song too. Kelly Clarkson is one of the generic poppy girls who go by their full names that I like (well, one song, I don't think I've heard any others).
Toxic I would like, but there is something about her voice I can't stand (this is probably either due to social conditioning or overplaying), I searched for a cover though, hence my discovering on Local H, who's cover of Toxic kicks much arse.

Right now, I think I've purged myself of most of my sucky-music listening (I used to listen to Nickelback ::shudder:: ), but a few vestiges remain.  For instance, I can't resist the pull of Ugly Duckling.  As basic and silly as they are, they're immensely entertaining.  Eat a Meat Shake!

I'll agree with that.  But as lyricists and rappers they're definitely not on the same level as people like Louis Logic.  I'm only mentioning them here because compared to more "serious" rap, it's just not the same.  There isn't nearly as much talent and sophistication.  They're still fun as all hell :)

I love Blink 182. Love them. I'm still in denial over the hiatus thing. Depending on how you look at it they could be considered my favorite band.

Also, everyone at school hates me for loving Green Day, which kinda surprised me because I didn't realise there was so much Green Day hate. God help me if they ever find out I like Blink.

I love Blink's early stuff. There was a charm to it before they let the other guy start singing. You know, the extremely whiney one. After that, it was kind of downhill. Before that, though, they had this great fun, off-key sound to them which I really dug.

I still love Green Day. In fact, I think they're better now than ever.

Either of you heard Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat? It really suprised me when I heard it round a friends house, tonnes of jazz and industrial influence, and a pretty funny joke track.

I'm okay with the harder, less rappy nu-metal myself, well, what I mean is I infinitely prefer it at clubs or parties to, say, The Used. At least you can headbang to it and it's got some balls, even if they are small and emaciated and have never been near a wall in their life.

I'll probably look for that one soon, if only to see where the self-titled incarnation of Slipknot got their ideas from.

Thanks for the S.O.D. recommendation, by the way.  'Tis a good album, particularly the out-and-out joke tracks like "What's That Noise?".

I think most of my "shitty" music bases have indeed been covered. I dont agree with the blink 182 stuff, never been a fan of them. *shrug*

I saw them a few weeks ago at Milton Keynes, and it was so fucking cool. Jimmy Eat World also ruled, though I'd kinda like to see them headline some where smaller at some point. The first two support bands sucked though (but it was worth sitting through them for JEW and GD). Anyway, I envy you. Everyone I know who went wants to go see them again.

Also, as well as Blink and Green Day, Jimmy Eat World are one of my favorite bands. When I think about it most of my music is probably regarded as shitty here. The problem is I'm not willing to reject everything I used to listen to before I found indie, just because to be 'indie' I'm supposed to believe everything mainstream sucks.

sometimes I listen to the odd coldplay tune.

I keep my Aqua - Aquarius CD in a special place because that album makes me so happy for no reason at all. I'm a Cartoon hero, asshole!

I sometimes like the serious-ish Blink182 songs, like I miss you, and Adam's song. I really liked the Cheshire Cat album. Lots of pretty good stuff there.

I don't listen to her, but I can appreciate Avril Lavigne. It's shclock, but it's not like she's just making up the songs for the purposes of money-making. She's just a lame-ass kid from Ontario who had a terribly uninteresting life prior tohitting it big, and as such, songs like 'skaterboi' are given life. However, 'I'm with you' is a pretty good song.

I love Bjork (though her last album was a bit of an alienator...)
I love moby. Fuck you.
I love Nine Inch Nails. Fuck you and all of your stupid friends.
I love tool. Fuck everyone.
I love sex....no fucks necessary.
...there're no rules against bad language are there?

Apparently bands are only sellouts if their music style changes after selling out.

uhm, I have an Alice DeeJay which I try to avoid touching...you have to listen to mainstream music before you can discover why it sucks, and what the alternatives are.

edit: Speaking of Jimmy Eat World, bleed American is a Great album, with the exception of that shitty authourity song...horrible.

I enjoy Keane.

I didn't realise there was such an anti-Tool/NIN sentiment around because I love them too. I also listen to a variety of industrial, ebm, black/death/doom and power metal bands who probably wouldn't be very highly regarded on here. But then I don't really consider myself "indie" any more than I consider myself affiliated to any other genre.

I rate The Colour and the Shape in the top five to ten rock records released in the 1990s.  I suppose I should defend that by saying that I could restrict that to major labels since I didn't listen to much indie when I was 5-15.  But there you have it.

I don't think there's that much of a dislike of tool or nin going around.

Most metalheads hate tool because people call it metal when it's actually art/alt-rock.
Most metalheads, goths, and even early industrial fans hate nin cause they're called industrial metal and aren't really any of those except on a few selected tracks.

and people don't like tool because they don't understand the lyrics, and people don't like nin because trent reznor sings about himself. woopdedoo.

And also, when people claim that dude from Tool is the greatest drummer ever, which happens quite a lot. Lots of people can play unusual signatures and have big prog rock drum-kits.

Myth.  Most people who don't like Tool lyrically do so because the lyrics are generally soulless.  The real reason most people get tired of Tool is that every song sounds more or less the same and each song is waaaay too long.

Quote

No, Trent Reznor is just really hit or miss lyrically.  Some of his songs are really fucking dead on, with good coherent and powerful lyrics.  This is, unfortunately, maybe 3 songs per album.  Everything else is whiny, incoherent, and rambly, and the lyrics just sound like a middle school diary.

Danny Carey isn't the best drummer evar, BUT:

He has an amazing way of setting up song sections with his fills.  He knows the feel of a song better than most drummers out there.  He knows when to be quiet, when to rock out, and when to step it up a notch.  All his fills are fiercely creative, as are his beats.  He's technical when he needs to be, and he doesn't overdo it.

He definitely isn't another prog-rock drummer with a big kit.  He's not the best drummer ever, but he's WAY up there on the list.

In terms of Art Rock, it's really, really, boring, bland art rock. Maybe I'm just a snob because I listen to The Mother's Freak Out over and over and am consistently listening to half of the fucking Resident's discography. Now that stuff is art rock.

Tool is prog for the industro-rock crowd. They're better than most of the industro-rock crowd, and maybe that's no what they meant to be, but that's what they're sold as/have become, and, let's be honest, they're nothing exceptional. I never said their drummer was bad: he's good, but calling him the best drummer in the world translates as: 'I know nothing about music'. Listen to some Jazz drummers. Listen to that dude who's name I have forgotten who does all the drum shit for Arjen Lucassen. Listen to some Arsis or anything with Hellhammer in it, especially Arcturus: Hellhammer smokes almost every other technical drummer in the world.

Or the vocals.  Problem is, the music really follows the lyrics.  Either the beat is really coherent and well developed, or it just wanders off into the middle of the road and gets hit by a passing semi.

Vertical Horizon.  They were my favorite band for a long time.  Most of the older singer/song writers like Jackson Browne, James Taylor and *gasp* Dan Folgerberg.  And for the record, I hate the Beatles.  I can't stand 98% of their songs.  My fiance and I went through their discography the other night, and found 2 songs that I wouldn't turn off if I heard them on the radio.

I listen to Christina Aguilera.

This is especially a big deal because I am one of those hard rock girls-- "Argh, the sound of metal grinding against metal!" Hell, it's bad enough I read QC and have  soft spot for indie rock. Like, seriously. I am embarrased to tell my friends that I want to see Black Rebel Motorcycle Club or Gomez. Man.

So one day, I am driving in my car, listening to my mp3 player (through the radio adapter) and I guess "Dirrty" came on. My friend, who is more metal than a frikin steel mine, looked at me really funny.

"Sorry," I said, "That must be my niece's."

I can't imagine anyone hating the beatles, because there's only ONE song out of their entire discography that I don't like. However, I can pretend to imagine maybe...not liking the early stuff cause it's just standard first-fourth-fifth style chord progressions and typical early 60s britrock. But it's hard not to fall in love with everything after 1967.

Well, Tool's drummer is indeed very good. I've learned how to play Schism, and believe me, that's not easy. But world's greatest drummer? Nah, no way. The guy is extremely good, but there are other great drummers out there as well.
However, I shall award him the title of "Most Pretentious Drummer", because most people don't actually arrange the drumming of 10 minute song in a way that the number of bass drum kicks is exactly a special number that appears in some mystical text. Or that, when written down, the tabs form a specific pattern that also has some sort of mystical connection.
If you ask me, that's downright stupid and unnecessary, but whatever floats your boat really.

And before people yell at me: I like Tool, I just think that pretentious drumming concept is taking it a bit too far.

As for your last point: I beg to differ. Not everyone can have a big prog-rock drumkit. Take me, for example. I'm a poor student. I can't even afford a double pedal, much less the kit Danny Carrey has.
