The Ask Jeph thread

A long while ago (around #300), you said you had an idea of where the strip was heading.  More recently, you've indicated that this isn't quite the case any more.

So, my question:
Which major developments had you imagined way back when, and which ones just sprouted closer to the moment?  You've said you had The Talk and Hannelore planned well in advance (as I assume you had the Marten-Dora thing planned); what about Marten's firing?  The band?  Sven rehabilitating?  The new Coffee of Doom Employee, whenever she shows up?

Thanks!

If Dave Grohl were an AnthroPC, could he defeat Pintsize in a sumo match? And (as someone who watches too much anime for my own good) I want to know if Pintsize would be voiced by a person (and if so, by whom) or a voice synthesizer? This is assuming QC would be put into audible format.

How are Marten and Steve friends?  Steve seems to be his only acquaintance prior meeting Faye in this entire city, and I don't believe they share(d) the same work place.  Mutual friends of bitchy ex?

Although you've made it clear that Marten isn't completely based upon you, is that the case with the other cast members, Tequila Monster included?

Also (even when the question is a tad late)...Do you like soccer?...I'm asking because of the IndieTits strip about the World Cup, and the German National Team badge on Faye's shirt (nitpicky and a wee bit obsessive, i know).

If a fan asked you to give them a cameo, would you?  If so, would they die horribly (in the comic)?

If a fan were to ask you to draw one of the characters naked, how would you respond? (Please note, this is curiosity.  I have porn if I want to see that stuff)

Are there any unacceptable ways for a fan to introduce themselves to you?

Have you ever had to suppress the urge to tell a fan to "Get a fucking life!"?  Or do you just yell it at them if you feel the need?

I'm curious about two things:

1. Does the future hold crazy international trips to or more insane-o crossovers with other comics in Questionable Content?
2. Have you considered or are you planning on any new comic concepts other than Questionable Content or IndieTits?
3. If I repeated any questions in this post, would I be shunned for it or would you look it over as understandable?

It may seem as if I'm a total kiss-ass, but Jeph, you're a brilliant artist.
Very inspiring, indeed.
I turned a lot of my friends on to QC, and they're just as obsessed as I am.
Thanks for entertaining my otherwise boring life.
It means a lot.

P.S. "Stalker Boy" from 710 should come back to the coffee shop and harass Faye some more. She needs some lovin'!

Eek, more questions come to mind...

What artists did you use as a source of material inspiration?

So if advertisements and merch are your sole source of income, what takes up most of your time?  Beating off horny female fans?

Where's the beef?

I think Jeph's answered what inspires him already. If I remember, it included White Ninja.
And I can pretty much assume that T-shirt packing takes up the greatest majority of his time, since it was all he wrote about in his newsposts for a week or two.

I'll pass on the beef.  Out of curiousity, is Jeph still paying attention to this?  It's been since July, I think, that he's responded to it.  If he is ignoring it now, I want to just grieve and get over it. :-D

Before I ask my question, I would like to offer my condolences on your severed artery and wish you a speedy recovery. The question i ask is to be taken in humor and is not meant to be disrespectful in any way.

I cant help notice the parallel between your knife accident and Faye's cooking accident. Did you put that into Faye's character because you (or some you know well) had that kind of accident, or was it a simple coincidence/divine intervention that you made a character who cut themselves on the hand with a knife, then you cut yourself on the hand with a knife too?

My bet is that it's in the "comfortable" range.

This is an odd question. Which of the characters do you think can sing?

Faye and Dora. Nobody else.

Do you dislike The Who? Reading through the archives i got the impression you didnt like them, but i may just be overprotective of my favorite band.

Pete Townshend seems like kind of a jerk, but he writes some good tunes.

A long while ago (around #300), you said you had an idea of where the strip was heading. ?More recently, you've indicated that this isn't quite the case any more.

So, my question:
Which major developments had you imagined way back when, and which ones just sprouted closer to the moment? ?You've said you had The Talk and Hannelore planned well in advance (as I assume you had the Marten-Dora thing planned); what about Marten's firing? ?The band? ?Sven rehabilitating? ?The new Coffee of Doom Employee, whenever she shows up?

Thanks!

Everything past Marten and Dora getting together has been largely improvised with an eye to long-term developments. If that makes any sense.

No. Josh Homme could though. I will never give Pintsize a voice if I can help it.

How are Marten and Steve friends? ?Steve seems to be his only acquaintance prior meeting Faye in this entire city, and I don't believe they share(d) the same work place. ?Mutual friends of bitchy ex?

College buddies? Met in a gay bathhouse? I dunno.

If you absolutely had to choose... ?Indian, Thai, Mexican or Italian? ?Food, that is. ?Though I suppose hookers would be good to know as well.

I like Thai more, but I could probably eat Mexican more often before I got sick of it.

Whatever happened to Marten's Yelling about Music blog?

Haven't had time.

Nobody in the comic is "based" on me any more than any other character. They're all extensions of my personality I guess, since I made 'em up.

I like watching the World Cup. Beyond that I don't really keep up.

If a fan asked you to give them a cameo, would you?? If so, would they die horribly (in the comic)?

If a fan were to ask you to draw one of the characters naked, how would you respond? (Please note, this is curiosity.? I have porn if I want to see that stuff)

Are there any unacceptable ways for a fan to introduce themselves to you?

Have you ever had to suppress the urge to tell a fan to "Get a fucking life!"?? Or do you just yell it at them if you feel the need?

1) Probably not.

2) Only for millions of dollars.

3) With a knife.

4) Outside of the forums? Nope. People are generally nice in person!

1. Probably.
2. Constantly.
3. Whatevs. It's better than the same 10 questions every interviewer asks me for their articles.

Eek, more questions come to mind...

What artists did you use as a source of material inspiration?

So if advertisements and merch are your sole source of income, what takes up most of your time?? Beating off horny female fans?

Where's the beef?

1. Everything. Literally everything.
2. Packing t-shirts and drawing.
3. In my freezer.

My question, as long as it hasn't been asked yet.
When, can, how will you include more Mieville (or cats in general) in future comics?

Maybe! Cats are fun to draw.

uh in the first (technically second issue) of my comic book one of the main characters is wearing a coffee of doom shirt,i did this as homage but um just wondering...are you gonna sue me?

Not unless you start sellin' the shirts yourself. In which case I will burn your house down with you trapped in it.

Before I ask my question, I would like to offer my condolences on your severed artery and wish you a speedy recovery. The question i ask is to be taken in humor and is not meant to be disrespectful in any way.

I'm gonna chalk it up to coincidence. Most everybody's had to get stitches in their hand at some point or another.

Hmm...I wonder why AIM isn't working for you... I don't have AOL either, but mine works fine...

Yes, Lego Star Wars 2 is fun, though my time is taken up by cleaning, homeschool, Okami, and Tales of the abyss. And sometimes the sims 2.

Here's a question for you, Jeph. What types of games do you like? Or do you even play them?
Also, what do you think about Metallica? I just discovered Master of Puppets (yes, I'm behind the times for a 17 year old. Hush.), and it's their only song I like (due to damn emotional issues...damn the second x-chromosome).

Hey, I don't know if you've answer this but i'm new to the forums (not to the comic) and i've been wondering why you changed comic #537?  It used to have the brown eyed girl joke and when i checked back the next day you changed it.

Apparently, the "Brown Eyed Girl" joke had already appeared in Too Much Coffee Man, so Jeph changed it to "Love In An Elevator" (he claimed to be contacted by the author of TMCM, if i'm not mistaken)

Okay got two questions for ya Jeph:

1) How is your hand doing? healing well i hope?

2) I know you've repeatedly said that you liked how your drawings were coming out in the more recent times, but i was recently looking back at some of the older drawings (circa 300-350) and i notice that (in my opinion) the characters and scenery look a lot more real and better in my eyes. Why the move from that style of drawing to the current one?

In a news post from one of your comics (can't remember the number) You said you received a lot of E-mails thanking you for introducing Broken Social Scene to them.

So I guess I have two questions about that which is 1) How do you feel when you get such an E-mail?
And 2) Which band would you now say (from both '05 and '06 of the RL list) would be the one people E-mail you to thank you for introducing them to that band?

You totally had the "OMG shut up dad" face going on so I knew what was up.

i was doing some backreading today (and loving the entire comic?) and i noticed a few references that you play WoW (for those who dont know, it is an acronym for the highly addictive World of Warcraft) I was wondering if you still played, and if so, on which servers?

I stopped playing WoW when I realized it was more of a part-time job than a pastime.

Jeph.
Wasn't Faye going to a therapist now, are we going to see more of that? I have trouble judging passage of QC time so maybe she just hasn't had another appointment yet?

Are we ever going to get the knock down nude mud wrestling promised?? :-D
(JK, please never draw any of the characters naked, well except pintsize of course)

Faye'll see her therapist again, eventually. QC's glacial continuity demands a big wait, though.

If I ever draw QC characters naked, I will be able to retire at 28 and live life comfortably on the French riviera.

It WOULD be interesting, however, to see Dora's tatoo finished at some point. I recall you flashing a few images of the lake of fire recently. Will it ever be completed or one of those many tattoo projects that get started and never is completed?

More to the point, when would we ever get the chance to see a finished version? Dora isn't topless-from-the-back-view very often.

Have you ever listened to Soul Coughing and/or Mike Doughty?  I've been waiting for you to drop a reference since I started reading the comic and it just hasn't happened.  I mean, love it or hate it, I just figured it'd be an easy target...

^^ Yeah he acts like that way too much for my liking....... One time I tried the ol' punch in the arm and he ended up punching me back except really hard. The shirt made my algebra teacher well I wouldn't say orgasm but she loved it. So much in fac tthat I received teh greatest honor in her class................ a Naval Academy pencil with her name writter on it and a "Congratualtions for exelling at 8th grade AP Algebra" sticker she made herself. SCORE!

for #1... Only part time? I looked at the application for a famous MC/BWL/AQ40 raid guild and I swear it was more stringent in terms of what was required to get the post, hours required, and rules and regulations than several corporate jobs i applied to over the last year O.O

#2: well you have done a couple of dora changing while talking to her cat (another opportunity to show melville too!) or there are plenty of ways... you could even do the mudwrestling idea up above! :p

"Nobody in the comic is "based" on me any more than any other character. They're all extensions of my personality I guess, since I made 'em up."
It was on page eight, mate.

No worries though we forgive you :)
