Hey Jeph!
A couple of questions for you.
1. What piece of music is Benji playing in comic #1062, and
2. Is he hybrid picking (as it looks like he is using a pick).
Thank you in advance for your answers!

Someone mentioned in the Weekly Comic Talk for last week that the music was Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquín Rodrigo (1901 - 1999).

A lot of that concerto would require picking. It's a pretty challenging piece (or at least it sounds challenging to a non-guitar player).

Jeph,

Do you have to have your own webcomic to submit a guest strip to you?

No obligation for you to even run it, obviously, but just a query.

And then headbutting it.

Hey, Jeph, looking at today's comic strip i got a tingling sense of presaging weird version of "La Vie Boheme"... Is that normal?

I mean, i had that dream about that table-dancing singing about lesbians, s/m, yogurt, inabilities of holding erections on high holydays, 10 gallon plastic pickle tubes, wine and beer and...*sigh* just read it

Have you ever considered placing a song clip or entire song on the sidebar that is meant to be played while reading the comic for background music?

That is a fucking terrible idea, no offense.

This comic has a fairly large fanbase with very varied tastes. You could never find music that everyone would enjoy. Plus, it's obnoxious forcing any music on somebody. Best Jeph can do is recommend it for those who care.

I'm still feeling pretty asstastic, but at least my fever seems to be gone now. Drawing will be marginally less painful tonight.

I've thought about embedding music but yeah, it is hella intrusive and distracting from the comic. Also it would absolutely destroy my bandwidth, which I use enough of as it is.

The bandwidth issue is understandable. And Ballard, I did not mean for the music to be imposing on folks or to cause issues with taste, but for example...take today's comic. I find it would be entertaining to have the option to listen to that song. Ah well, I'll chuck the idea back next to my desire for videophones and virtual reality porn.

Thing is, it'd probably be illegal too. The laws for streaming music online are pretty grey area, and the comic attracts too much traffic to remain insignificant and thus safe from the legal sharks.

Like I said, best thing to do is just recommend it and those who care will listen on their own.

True. Although I feel that, when the revolution comes, music industry lawyers as a whole are a bunch of predatory jerks who will be the second bunch against the wall (Every mindless twit from Madison Avenue will be first), until that happy day it's best not to do the equivalent of poking them with sticks.

This isn't the "answer FOR Jeph thread", obviously, but he's pretty much said before that his idea of who the characters are writes the comic for him. If his idea conflicts with what fans want, tough. If it's similar, it's not because we thought it'd happen or because we asked for it, it's because it was going to happen anyway.

At least that's how I understood it.

OK, so I'm not really asking anything, and I'm geeking out like a little fanboy, but i just had to find some place to say that you are the smartest, funniest most gifted cartoonist I've ever read in my entire life. You Win. Everything. Forever. I want to be you when I grow up. There is not a trace of sarcasm in any of these statements. I found the archive a week ago, and my wife almost called the police to report me missing. I swear that I have a healthy disdain for stalker fanboys, but you really wowed me. Please don't ever stop. The Hannelore line: "Will you be cowering? Can I join you?" was one of the biggest of the 152 spit-takes I have done while reading this. I'm so bummed that I had to slow down to one a day...sigh.

That's how I felt when I caught up too, and I echo his praise. I'm really impressed with your artistic improvement, and combined with your clever humor, and (loose? insightful? semi-planned?) control over storylines, it's no wonder you have many avid (addicted?) readers.  I've tried to create a comic, but seem to lack something, like maybe talent.

I'm trying to take to heart a comment you made a couple of years ago - "While using photo references takes some of the guesswork out of things like perspective and lighting, it also means you have 200 times more detail to fret over."  Yep. Slows me down horribly.  So thanks for all the tips, and the excellent tutorial!

So... Jeph... On Friday the 8th's comic, is Faye singing Nine Inch Nails "Starf*ckers Incorporated" or is she singing Carly Simon's "You're So Vain"?

Both have those lyrics, either could fit the situation very well.

I'm assuming that it's Carly Simon's "You're so vain" 'cause it's a typical karaoke song. Take it from someone who does it often. Haha :)

I was planning on making some kind of online collectible card game of sorts and I am trying to get LOTS of artists to perhaps draw or donate a piece of art that can be used as a character or creature in it. Would you be interested in helping out? (This is the question)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The purpose of the card game is to spread the appreciation of art and to help people find artists that they enjoy the artwork of.
The dimensions and requirements for it all is not really prepared yet so if you happen to be willing it would be a long time from now (if not never :-( ).

Thanks for reading,

Carly Simon's "You're So Vain"?

This song was one of the ten on the XML station specifically created for the retail store where I used to work, which looped continuously. Other choice favourites included Blue Bayou and a horrible cover of Killing Me Softly and some stuff by Michael Bolton because studies show he makes women spend money.

I swear if I ever have to hear them again people will die by rusty nails through the rectum.

Micheal Bolton makes women spend money? You mean just his recordings, right? Not that Bolton's actually there, threatening to follow women home and sing at them if they don't make enough purchases. I mean, that I could understand.

Hmm. Maybe after Raven gets over Benji (if she does) she could develop a Bolton fixation. That'd have 'em crying "Bring back the Hobo!"

Jeph-

I was just wondering if you noticed the discontinuity of Faye saying she wished she could get up in front of a room full of people (before she kissed Sven), when she had just had a karaoke battle with him the same night and sung that "You're so vain.." song at him?

I think a lot of people missed it cause of the whole Sven kissing going on, but it seems you may have miscalculated your plot a bit. Just wondering if you caught that.

This was answered in the weekly thread. Faye says "I wish I could push my boundaries like that." Hannelore overcame her fear of crowds, people and embarrasment to sing at the bar; Faye wanted to overcome her promlems with intimacy, and kiss someone without freaking out over it.

Do you know about other webcomic artists? How they feel about forum posts?

Are antroPC's (and Hanner's humanoid boyfriend-robot thing) programmed with the Three Laws of Robotics?

Isaac Asimov, for anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about, was the father of robot science fiction, and in almost all of his stories, robots are equipt with the three laws:
   1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
   2) A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
   3) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
I'm sort of doubting that Pintsize is, and Hanner's robot didn't really talk until they put Winslow into it. Winslow seems pretty docile and reluctant to wreak havoc even when he's alone with Pintsize. So, I don't know what to think. Anyone else curious?

Is 'hella' a common term on the east coast too?
