Why, from what I observed, did you get so upset that some people thought that Hanners and Marigold were going to become a couple?

Not wanting to talk for Jeph, but I got annoyed at the 'shipping because there was nothing to indicate that there could be a possible relationship there. He had a comic where Hannelore and Marigold were in the same room and everyone went "HANNIGOLD WOOOO THAT IS SO HAWT".

Well, I don't know when other people started talking about it. The first time I knew anyone else besides me considered that 'ship' is when I saw 34 of it. I don't remember when I started thinking it was interesting, but it certainly wasn't when she burst in and ended her mess. When they started hitting it off as friends, it just seemed to occur to me that, other than a possible gender barrier, they seemed to have a lot to offer each other as a couple. I dunno, I don't 'ship' in the sense that I ever feel someone is 'meant' for someone in a work of fiction, though with good fiction you get invested and hope things to happen.

Jeph - First, I'd like to say that your intial attempts at doing plaid/tartan are OK, especially with getting the vertical and horizontal lines (can't remember the technical term) to follow the flow of the body. As you're doing it now it looks more like a shirt with horizontal and vertical stripes because the lines are all the same colour throughout

As a person who paints plaids on toy soldiers I know how difficult it can be to get plaids right.  Is there a way that you can blend the two colours of the plaid together for the parts of the vertical and horizontal lines except where the lines cross?  In painting you can do this by blending paints or by using really thinned paints, but something tells me that isn't an option here.

I didn't know it was a 'thing' but after reading this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shipping_(fandom) kind of have to agree with our gallant host, there.

I did learn a new meaning of that word though, so it wasn't a complete loss.

...the vertical and horizontal lines (can't remember the technical term)...

Warp and weft (pronounced "woof").  the warp are the vertical fixed threads on the loom, the weft are the woven ones that run horizontal.  Alternating the colors in a consistant pattern in the same way for both warp and weft causes plaids - the colors are most intense where they agree, and have an in-between muting where they don't.

As any plaid user knows all too well.

I have now proven that I've been to too waaaaay too many "sheep-to-shawl" competitions...

Actually, one was probably too many!

Warp means "that which is thrown across" (Old English wearp, from weorpan, to throw, cf. German werfen, Dutch werpen).

The words woof and weft both derive ultimately from the Old English word wefan, "to weave".

Dear Jeph,

Have you heard the new Krallice album?

If so, do you think it's better or worse than their self-titled?

I've only listened it through a couple times but my initial impressions are that while it is very good, the songs are not as individually distinctive as the ones on the first record. Also I don't think they'll ever top Energy Chasms. The new growly vocals are cool though!

So Jeph, you manage to get any of your stuff recorded with OMG REAL MICZ yet?

Not to my satisfaction. The trouble with mic recording is that instead of turning on my POD, setting my software compression to its usual setting and being good to go, a tiny 1/2 inch difference in mic placement results in COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SOUND and instead of actually writing songs I spend four hours just fucking around with the microphones and obsessing about tone. I'm hoping once we move into our house (and I can run my amps full-up without disturbing neighbors) this will be less of an issue, but we'll see.

Heh. Have fun ever playing a gig then, man. I have only ever been happy with a miked amp's sound ONCE, and that was at a gig where everything else that could possibly go wrong went wrong. But damned if it didn't wind up being a great gig. Suggestion: make like Brian Eno and look at things sideways. You could try recording the songs with a tone that you're not satisfied with at the time of recording, but don't delete the recording. Do it with a couple of different mic positions and wait a few days before listening to the playback, and see if you wind up feeling differently. You might wind up with something awesome.

Downside: you can NEVER REPLICATE IT EVER because damned if you're not right about it being a pain in the ass.

Oh, I've played plenty of shows in my day and very quickly learned to trust the soundman (or at least not worry about what the PA sounds like). When you're playing live your #1 consideration has to be playing the songs right, not worrying about your sound.

Basically when recording I get really really anal about guitar midrange, often to the point of forgetting that a lot of the guitar tones I really like (Gojira, Behemoth, Mogwai) are practically nothing BUT kinda honky mids.

In my opinion; you should not obsess about microphone placement. I do both of either mic'ing the cabinet or running the pod direct in studio match mode. It DOES help when you can turn up to where you need to. But I think mostly you just need to forget about how EXACTLY it sounds and just set it up whichever and try to make your playing sound good. But maybe my ears just aren't working any more.

I've run a search and concluded that at least in this thread, this hasn't been asked.

How come 'Scary Go Round' isn't in your 'recommended' list of comics on the right side of the site? I've discovered it through Jeff Rowland's site actually; and it struck me as odd that I hadn't gotten there from QC, which is how I started reading about 80% of the 'other' webcomics I know. Its mix of drama and jokes seems similar to yours.

Hey Jeph, what are your opinions on the last Juan Maclean album?

Not as good as his first record. Only the longer, housier tracks (The Simple Life, Tonight, Happy House) really do anything for me. Also I think I'm getting a little tired of the "DFA Sound."

OK, old one this:
In #691, which of the four polysyllabic word bubbles contain the "three" jokes mentioned in the news post for that day? I mean, the dewy decimal one is an oldie amongst library-folk, and the 'O joyous day!' is clearly another, but I was wondering if you meant to reference Fight Club (film version) with Marten's last line?

Basically when recording I get really really anal about guitar midrange, often to the point of forgetting that a lot of the guitar tones I really like (Gojira, Behemoth, Mogwai) are practically nothing BUT kinda honky mids.

What do you mean, honky? Like, they're not well-rounded in some frequencies and they peak uncomfortably in the dead center of the midrange spectrum? Or upper or lower ends of the midrange section?
