Or you could just listen to any number of existing virtuoso technical metal bands. Some of which even have a decent notion of songwriting.

I dunno that they fall into the virtuoso/tech. metal category really, but I love The Mantle.
Kai:
I was more of categorizing Dream Theatre and Agalloch into prog metal (despite that Dream THeatre aren't very good at prog. Like, at all).
Virtuoso? My favorite is Buckethead, really. You get the avant with the metal (on most albums, some are more ambient n shiz) and it rocks the fuck out.
