LAY DOWN YOUR SOUL TO THE GODS ROCK AND ROCK

Borondir:
I really wouldn't call Agalloch prog by any stretch of the imagination, they don't really have technical playing, strange chord progressions, and rhythmic complexity. What they do have is amazingly emotional, dark, and atmospheric blending of folk, neoclassical and metal.
KharBevNor:
But they are progressive for metal, as in they do different things and they have odd influences.
Why should prog, meaning progression, all sound the same? Agalloch are definitely prog in my mind, in the same way Pink Floyd were never technically amazing, but they were bloody prog.
Aneurhythmia:
Yeah, I'd be inclined to say that if a band fuses neoclassical, folk, and metal and does concept material with themes integrated across an album, "progressive" isn't totally off the mark.
Borondir:
Argh, I'm surrendering to silly genre definitions. They are progressive in the sense that they are creating unique, new, and imaginative music. They are not "prog" in the sense that they do not fit a fairly established template by which some rock bands explore musical technicality.
