Someone tell me some modern bands I'd like.
FeralCats:

That's a bonus? How?

well it sucks that he had to die, obviously. but i think, as a musician, if i had to die young...i think i'd wanna do it on stage.
plus you get random trivia props points for knowing that.
McTaggart:
The Flaming Lips?
The Hammered:
SONIC YOUTH
All right, I mostly like their really early stuff, but they're still around, and supposedly still good (I haven't gotten around to buying Sonic Nurse yet, though I intend to very soon).
Also, Lightning Bolt's pretty good, as long as you don't demand too much melody or prettiness or general accessibility (which it sounds like you don't). Aside from that, I'm with you about mostly listening to bands which have long since broken up.
You could also check out Jeph's "recommended listening" list, but I've only bought maybe a couple of the albums he lists there, so I can't vouch for it.
P.S. Dying on-stage is probably the coolest way to die that I can think of. Bonus points if you die because of something directly related to your performance and if you collapse just after finishing a monumental, awe-inspiring set. Or if it's interrupted at the most dramatic possible moment.
a pack of wolves:
I second the Lightning Bolt, but you might want to look into a few other Load bands like the Scissor Girls or The USA Is A Monster who're morestrange and less unrelenting than the Bolt. You might also enjoy some Skin Graft records stuff like Cheer-Accident. I'd also recommend The Flying Luttenbachers for some whacked-out jazz. Oh, and Like A Kind of Matador for some prog doom.
