Hideo Kojima LOVES his Snake character, and the character has a LOT of fans.
Snake is probably going to be a major selling point, and create more hype and excitement than any Belmont ever could.

Hideo Kojima loves his character Solid Snake. And he loves Nintendo and the Smash Brothers series. Snake making it into Smash Brothers must be a dream come true for the guy, and to me that is reason enough to have him in there.

Plus, you're gay for Snake.

Personally, I don't see what's wrong with having Snake in there. I mean, you've got Samus with her crazy futuristic weaponry. And also, Kojima was the one who came up with the idea of having Snake in a Smash Brothers game, not Konami. Konami obviously had to give permission, but considering they should be bending over backwards to make Kojima happy, I'm sure they were not too resistant to the idea.

If we're talking support trophies, how about one of the Metal Gears?  Rex or Ray would be awesome.
Actually, I think most of the bosses would work in one way or another.

bryanthelion:
I still dont like it. He really doesnt fit in with the other characters.

It should've been the castlevania character. That'd made awesome sense.

Considering the disgusting hype Brawl has gotten, I don't think it really needed Snake for a major selling point. It's Smash Bros. THAT is a major selling point.

Futuristic weaponry is one thing, but Snake doesn't really seem to fit the vibe of the game. Considering it's a fighting game, I don't see what the idea of a plot has to do with why a character should be there. Simon just fits the vibe of the game better.

Storm Rider:
But again, it wasn't Konami's idea, it was Kojima's, so of course he's going to put his own character in there. For all we know, maybe a Belmont is in there too.
