Fuck yes!

I just got back from Bright Eyes in Saskatoon (three hour commute each way) and it was a very damn good show! Gruff Rhys, guys, is officially pure awesome. He messed up during the first song and the audience was all "YEAH IT'S OKAY YOU STILL ROCK" and he finished it and it was devastatingly beautiful like most of his set was. Also, I won't ruin it, but when he offers to play the song with the birds in it you should accept heartily.

Bright Eyes themselves were pretty good. They played "Train Under Water," "Poison Oak" and a rather spare version of "Lover I Don't Have To Love." Also, Oberst definitely played "First Day Of My Life" solo. I was sad there was no "Bowl Of Oranges" or especially no "Road To Joy" but he's got such a massive catalogue that I guess you can't have it all. It was still pretty radical though.

The venue kinda sucked ass; it was basically part of the city's exhibition grounds and thus was a big concrete room with enormous curtains separating us from backstage and a big beer garden that I hated because it meant that we were in that shitty venue so some promoter could set up a beer garden and make some additional scratch, gahhhhhhhh. And there was no merch. So going into it, there were two strikes, but they managed to hit a decent triple, if not an inside-the-park homerun.

Oh, and most of the audience members were girls, but they weren't complete idiots. The guy in front of me was kind of a different story; after all, Bright Eyes post-Morning is not an appropriate band to throw up the horns for.

I am very excited for Wilco now. Mostly because while Oberst didn't seem to really encourage a lot of audience participation, Wilco's live record indicates they'll be all up on that.

What about you guys? Hit up any of your summer concerts yet? Excited to attend some of them?

No summer concerts yet, I missed out on the Bright Eyes show here, but I don't mind that all too much.  I don't dislike him, but I'm a fan.

I plan on going to see Neko Case in early July, and as of now, due to age limits at most of the better venues, that's all I'm going to go to at the moment.  I'm out of town for pretty much all of July, and the begining of August, so I'm missing the Vancouver Folk Festival, as well as Broken Social Scene and Sam Roberts with the Stills, which I'm really not happy about.

However, I do plan on going to the Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle in the begining of September, the line up is fairly amazing, so I couldn't resist.

And damn you on being able to go see Wilco, Johnny.  They somehow decided to hit basically every major Canadian city except Vancouver.  I'm stilly slightly pissed about that.

Well, I actually have to drive out five hours to Winnipeg to see Wilco, so hell of inconvenience right there. Although I'm surprised they aren't playing as lucrative a locale as Vancouver.

I'm debating about buying tickets for the Flaming Lips/Sonic Youth, but I'm having trouble convincing myself to cough up $35 for it.  Which is particularly lame since I had no problem shelling over for Ani Difranco coming up later this month.

You can leave the show, and stumble around the streets drunk all night and not worry about getting cold. That's the benefit of summer concerts.

I went to the bright eyes show here. It sounds like it was exactly the same as your show.

There isn't much of one, except that you can maybe make very large commutes to go see some of them and also taking trips to see said concerts won't affect your life too much. Unlike, say, during the school year.

I'm going to see Pelican, Liars, both in Toronto-also looking to go see Sonic Youth in august with The Go! Team. I saw Bright Eyes earlier in the year with Feist opening-considered going again for Gruff alone......

It's worth $35 EACH to see those bands. Go you fool.
Well...not the lips. But sonic youth? Yuh.

Well, my problem is:  I'm (totally, miserably) lame enough to only be vaguely familiar with Sonic Youth.  (Yes, I know who they are, what they've done, etc etc, just haven't listened to them much.  I know I lose my right to post here just by admitting it.)  And though I'm more into the Flaming Lips, I'm not sure how much fun I'd have being the only sober person there. ;)

EDIT: I've realized that obviously the solution to this is start listening to Sonic Youth immediately.  So here I go.

Hahha ahh confliction!  I downloaded Daydream Nation to start with because it was the only thing I could find on BitTorrent.  Apparently it's not the one I should start with though?  Other Sonic Youth that I've heard is Kool Thing and stuff on the subUrbia soundtrack.

I'll try to find Sonic Nurse and/or Murray Street next.

I really like Daydream Nation, but I don't think it's a very good starting point for most people. I always reccomend Sister as it's accesible but still edgy. I don't usually reccomend Murray Street as a starter even if it is my favourite Sonic Youth album because the tracks are quite long.

Goo is for sissies.

brandie: you may want to try anther prgram called soulseek. Or if you buy the Sonic Youth DVD you get all of Goo and a good sampler of all their post-Daydream stuff.

Now for something on topic:  Summer Concert season here is barren. The most appealing thing until September (when I'm going to the New Pornographers) is a TATU concert 4 hours away.

I just saw The Lovely Feathers with The Spinto Band, and both were amazing! :-)

The Spinto Band was particularly impressive live, lots of energy. Although The Lovely Feathers might even beat them at energy. Basically, it was a ridiculously energetic show! (and there were only about 20 people there!)

Hell yeah I can't wait I also caught Bright Eyes here in Winnipeg just last night actually. I thought it was a great show MUCH better than his show in Fargo ND that I went to last year. HE also mentioned how he lost 150 Canadian Dollars betting at the Saskatoon horse race track, but than hit the trifecta (spelling) at the Belmont so he was back on top again. Great show, good venue for Bright Eyes (The Burton Cummings Theatre) and Gruff Rhys was fantastic.

Well, lesse here:

I saw the same Bright eyes concert as you, although in Victoria.  I did enjoy Rhys, although when he sampled the audience, he asked us to make the sound of a moose.  Some guy simply screamed "MOOOOSE" and was sampled.  It destroyed the ambiance of a deep song, and turned it into a joke, which I must admit, all of us, including Rhys, and Connor, enjoyed.

I am scheduled to see Broken Social Scene in July

And Leslie Feist later this month.

Also another great part of the show was that the fiddle player (who was amazing) was celebrating his 25th birthday and so we all sang happy birthday for him and he busted out a wicked fiddle solo in demonstraion of his talents, it was impressive. Where are your seats for Wilco? I'm on the 1st balcony which is too bad though I've heard that the balcony is alright, I've been lucky and managed the floor in all my previous expierences.

I've missed The Fall of Troy twice in the past 3 months, and that makes me kind of upset. Though I saw them last October, so it's not that big of a deal.

But I might see Say Anything in July, and I'm seeing Jim Gaffigan this Friday.

And Me and Him Call It Us are playing with Destroyer Destroyer sometime either this month or next...

There was recently a good festival around these parts called music waste. Most of the show's were kinda lame but I still went to a whole bunch of them. The best one was "They Shoot Horses" with Love and Mathematics and some other bands. ...Horses is incredible live for those who've never seen them.
Also I went to the Ladyhawk show for their CD release. I was kind of obliged to because they're pals of mine, but they were awesome as usual. For you folks who don’t know who Ladyhawk are you soon will; they're going to be huge I promise.
Anyways, yeah shows are good.

Hopefully I am seeing Bardo Pond at their CD release party tonight.  Bardo Pond are amazing and more.

But tomorrow night I will hopefully see Dead Meadow (FUCKING FINALLY) and motherfucking goddamn Blue Cheer.  Blue Cheer, who were exploding dogs with their amps all the way back in 1968.  Jesus Christ they're old, and Dickie Peterson is the only member still operating, but I fully expect to have the everloving shit rocked out of me.

I'd rant about Dead Meadow and how they're the best band to come out in the last 5 years but nobody here listens to them or knows who they are so my raves will get lost in the shuffle of bands nobody has heard of and be wasted.  Frankly I expect a better show out of them than Blue Cheer's decades-old and diluted live presence, but I made a bigger point out of Blue Cheer above because people might recognize the name and pay attention and the internet might love me more.

I KNOW I'm going to see Against Me!, The Soviettes and The Epoxies in November. If I miss that concert I will fucking kill something.

I'm hoping to see A Silver Mount Zion in August, but we'll see.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

dead meadow were one of the most intensely blah bands ive ever seen. totally mediocre.

lookin forward to pitchfest, comets on fire, and im sure wolf eyes for the umpteenth time, some other dudes, maybe a few other, but not sonic youth or the flaming lips because they are only playing lollapalooza in chicago. im not forking over $$ to watch those guys play a half hour.

Gah, are the Flaming Lips REALLY not going to be touring Canada? :( And if they do they better stop by Vancouver! They BETTER.

I think I'm going to the Broken Social Scene/The Stills/Sam Roberts show in July.

Not much else planned, maybe Folk Fest.

Ug, I'm so not happy to be missing that BSS show, it sounds like it'd be so good.  However, I might be going to see Wolf Parade and Frog Eyes in August, and mayhaps Bumbershoot, which is looking to be an awesome festival.

Just saw Band of Horses at the Warsaw in Williamsburg.  Bridwell was in top form, and contrary to some of the stuff I've read, the band was mostly in tune and spent relatively little time tuning.  They saved Funeral until the end of the encore, which was pretty clever on their part I thought.  The new material sounds great, although its a little softer and more emotive than the stuff on Everything All The Time.  Some cock in the audience yelled "Freebird!", apparently the same person who yelled "When is the next album coming out?"  I thought Bridwell was going to find him and strangle him for a moment, but he just made a joke out of it and played on.

All in all, great concert.  Highly recommend to anyone on one of the remaining touring dates who was considering it.
