I would have to say no. Damon Che doesn't impress me as much as Andrew Becker. At least not yet. I would be glad for you to give me examples.
While I will admit that Andrew Becker is a skilled and tasteful drummer, I just don't think he can compare to Damon Che. Becker does a great job of keeping the beat and adding tasteful fills and frills to the music of Medications, but I see him as using the drums the same way most rock bands utilize drums: to create a rhythmic foundation for all the other instruments, which are more featured. While there are some very interesting drum parts in Medication's music (the really really fast high-hat part in Safe and Sorry comes to mind), the focus is on the guitar and vocals. Damon Che takes the drums from a background piece to one of the main pieces of the band, while still providing a rhythmic foundation. He also facilitates the turn-on-a dime tempo changes and off kilter rhythmic patterns that set Don Caballero apart from many other math-rock bands. The other thing is, the styles of Don Cab and Medications are different, and so call for different drumming styles. I think that Medications calls for a pretty standard rock drumming style, with perhaps a little more technical and interesting stuff thrown in occasionally. Don Cab calls for intense, complex, absurd drumming, which is what Damon Che provides.
I think Don Caballero 2 and What Burns Never Returns are the best Don Cab albums, and really showcase not only Damon Che but all the members of the band. I have not heard the newest album (World Class Listening Problem), but I have heard that it does not compare favorably to the earlier albums (with the true Don Cab lineup), and it probably does not reflect the best of Don Cab. If you haven't heard Don Caballero 2 or What Burns Never Returns, you need to give them a listen.
