Quote from: Scandanavian War Machine

the only reason i didnt mention mike patton was because i didnt want to hurt anyone. Because sometimes when people realize the truth, their heads explode. but since everyone seems to be fine:

MIKE PATTON!!!!

MIKE PATTON!!!! (repeated for emphasis)

Also, Nils Frykdahl (Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Idiot Flesh) is pretty incredible.  And Christian Mona (Bogus Blimp) is darn good vocalist, though I suspect he can't ACTUALLY sing.  Plus others too numerous to name.

Plus, Females; I like Regina Spektor and Bjork, but I haven't heard many others I have an affinity for.  I haven't heard most of the ones mentioned here.  Except lots of Tori Amos.  TOO MUCH Tori Amos.  She's good, yes, but too much is too much.  Oh, and the girl from the Dresden Dolls!  She is impressive as well, and I have much respect for that band.

Grace Slick and Beth Gibbons' voices just do somehting to me.

And I'm with everyone on Mike Patton. Sure he's made alot of crap over the years but no-one alive can mathc him for sheer range. take California by Bungle. Average band'd need about six vocalists to make this album.

I've always found Mike Patton to be remarkable in terms of range and the unique quality he has to his voice. Mark Lanegan does a lot for me too, anyone with something that's a little quirky's good. Joey Cardamone of the Icarus Line is cool, and Isahn of Emperor always impressed me in standing out from the pack of samey metal vocalists.

The obvious Joanna Newsom, Neko Case, Jenny Lewis as far as the female noise making goes, and I'm starting to get into Regina Spektor, although I'm fearing pursuing such avenues will lead to a giant scarlet indie letter 'I' appearing on my person. Not that this would be a bad thing.

Male:
Tom Waits - - the man's voice sounds as thought it was aged in a vat of whiskey for 10 years and then taken outside and run over. I absolutely love it.

Jeff Magnum  (Neutral Milk hotel)

Robert Smith  (the Cure)

Edward Ka-Spel (the Legendary Pink Dots, the Tear Garden)

Brian Molko   (Placebo)

Morrissey

Female:

Gyða   (Múm)

Amanda Palmer (the Dresden Dolls)

Kelli Dayton (Sneaker Pimps)
Beth Gibbons (Portishead)

Both strike a distinct emotional chord with me.  I generally dislike female vocals, but these work for some reason.

Falco (mclusky)

Drunk and manic.  Really, what's not to love about Falco's vocals?

Wayne Coyne (flaming lips). He sings terrible but it matches the music perfectly, and that's one of the things that makes a great vocal.

Martin Leuthauser from The Walkmen, for sure. He has some real power, but he can be really fragile as well. Sometimes he tries a bit too hard, but when you hear songs like "Another One Goes By", that tired, drunken howl really hits you in the gut.

I know I'm probably alone in this, but I think Isaac Brock is a great singer. What I love about him is that he has some character, and everything he spouts out in that nasally southern drawl sound like gospel in my ears, and a lot of what he says would sound pretentious if sung by most other people. A lot, and I mean A LOT of people hate his voice, but I find it fascinating. It's so raw, and has much more meaning and impact than a good number of technically skilled/accomplished singers.

I also think Mark Paffi from Bear Vs Shark has an amazing voice. I think he's the best screamer out there, mainly because it's the only screaming that I really love. When he yells, he has impact, and it doesn't get annoying (besides "Heard Iron Bug...", but let's just forget about that). Also, his "pretty" voice is nice (flawed and raw, just how I like it).

Yeah, I like wierd voices. But I still love most of the people mentioned.

Guys, especially you Tom Waits fans, come the hell on ... Mark freakin' Lanegan!

Mark Lanegan's voice is what happens when you take fifteen cartons of cigarettes, soak them in a couple gallons of bourbon, run the mixture through a filter of every addictive substance known to man, and pour it into a hundred-year-old bottle that used to hold pure distilled love but went utterly dry 78 years ago and has nothing but crusty residue left.  The man is a demigod.

I'll Yousendit a file onto this thread to show you people once I'm on a computer that holds the right songs.

I wouldn't be doing this but everyone seems to be all over Tom Waits and nobody's giving Lanegan any credit.  This is criminal.

while I admit that I have never listened to any of Mark Lagenan's work, the main thing about Tom Waits that makes his music so enthralling is how well the atmosphere created by his raspy voice and his crude insturments melds with his lyrics; I think it presents a very unique result, an auditory experience that goes beyond the boundaries of most music.  Whether or not  Mark Lagenan's voice is any more beautiful or raspy, I still have an instilled fondness for waits and the aura that he creates.

Merk Lanegan is ace. Especially when paired with Isobel Campbell, whose voice is probably the opposite extreme.
