Need advice.
TheSilverWolf:
I'm trying to listen to more Indie music so that I knowwhat my girlfriend is talking about. I've tried the Yahoo Radio indie rock station, but I don't know. Any CD recomendations for a metal head trying something new?
Filk:
Mogwai, Deerhoof, Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene and Sonic Youth are the bands i (metalhead) like from the genre.
You can also try Flaming Lips, which a lot of metalheads seem to like when trying indie, but i really cant stand (be prepared for a huge dose of whiny male vocals).
TheSilverWolf:
I can't stamd Flaming Lips. Way too whiny. Spoon is okay, and I'll try the others.
schimmy:
"The Decemberists" and "Modest Mouse" are the first indie bands I listened to, and I consider them to be among my favourite bands.
The Decemberists are sort of folk rock, if you want to check them out, personally I'd recommend their album "Picaresque", or if you're feeling ambitious, "The Tain" EP is good, though it's rather lengthy so I wouldn't recommend it until you've heard Picaresque.
Modest Mouse are hard to describe, they're sort of punky music and vocals, but the lyrics are more poetic than the average punk band. Their most recent album "Good News for People Who Like Bad News" is widely considered to be their most accessible, but personally I think that "The Lonesome Crowded West" is a better album.
corwinzor:
There are a few metal/indie "crossover" bands... like Pelican and Isis who are heavy but have sort of an atmospheric "post-rock" sound. There is also a pretty awesome band called Mouth of the Architect, you should try to find their album 'Time and Withering' if you can, they play long heavy songs with tons of delay pedal. Also, everyone knows about Lightning Bolt, they are heavy and fast as hell without being a metal band--I know lots of people that are into metal and indie that really dig their stuff. There's also this Japanese band called Boris that just came out with a new album, they are on Southern Lord records and have a lot of aspects of metal but they really play all over the spectrum. I'm sure there's tons of crossover-type bands I'm forgetting, too.
