Edit: Silly whiny teenage children deserve everything they get, they have brought it upon themselves. They are genuinely rediculous. I know kids who are abused. They're not slly whiny teenage children. They got problems. And think most of those bands are crap.

that's fine if you think they're crap, i don't think so.  i'll admit i don't really have any major problems with my life except being heartbroken and such, but i'm not super emo like i think you think i am.  by that i mean stereotypically emo.

You posted 'I feel so alone' on a messageboard.
That's a pretty big cry for attention.

You should have been much more clear on that.
Actually, no, you shouldn't.
Because this thread wouldn't have happened, and it's SO entertaining.

original poster:

im glad you are sticking to your guns and defending your tastes in music. i happen to despise most of what you love, but its cool if you like it, and its also cool if you wish to explore other genres. but there is one problem. not a single one of those bands you listed is in any way emo, and every single time you use that term, it is insulting. sure, you may be angsty, but you are in no way a genre of music that was pretty much strangled to death in the mid nineties.

check out http://www.fourfa.com or look it up on wikipedia.

as well, there is no way that you could decide whether or not you like bands like mogwai, bss, or the arcade fire from random 30 second samples. you may want to try a little harder. who knows, maybe even go so far as to look them up on myspace.

and please, if not for ours, then for your own sake, stop refering to yourself as a genre of music.

Now, I would like to start off with this one statement: STOP ABUSING THE WORD "EMO". I could give you a long history of the term, and the genre, "emo", making references  to Rites of Spring and the like. That would be boring, and I've stopped long ago trying to change the majority of scenester trend-followers into educated scenester trend-followers. But stop throwing the word around like you know what it means.

Secondly, none of the music you listed is emo, emocore, screamo, or any other weird emo derivitive I am not familiar with (xXpost-punk hardcore emo electronicaXx does not count, sir). Most of the bands you listed are pop, pop-punk, or punk-rock. This is all fine and dandy, but it is certainly not emo. In subsequent posts, you said you only used the word "emo" to define the music you listen to. This is not the case.

I will stop now, as I believe by this point I am repeating myself. It is late, and I am no good at ranting. Goodnight, sir.

EDIT: Shitfuck, the guy above me beat me to it! And sounded less like an asshole! Kudos to you, guy above me!

Where did the Emo/Indie sticky go?  It might have helped this thread.

As for imapiratearg, good for you for listening to what you like to listen to.  I personally think most of its a load of shit, but hey, you would probably think the same about my music.  However, if you'd spent anytime browsing these forums before making your post, you would have realized that most people here don't take too kindly to people who have similar musical and cultural tastes to you.  You may have realized that you would be inviting insult by making such a post, and perhaps would have thought better of it.  Oh, and don't use age as an excuse (I'm 15).

That said, it still amuses me that you think The Arcade Fire is too instrumental and sounds like classical.  Hell, I think Broken Social Scene is way more instrumental than The Arcade Fire.  And if you think The Arcade Fire is too instrumental, then what the hell did you think of Mogwai?

I listened to Celine Dion when I was 16... Aren't you still a teen too?

Also: This guy has better taste in music than I did when I was that young. Of course, I was hopelessly uncool until college. I mean, I played dungeons and dragons and loved Celine Dion. I was also a straight guy in choir. DOOMED. DOOOMED.

This is too good to be true.
It has to be a gag account.

I seriously thought the people who stole the word emo were dying out.
You still see them, but they're all stale and crusty and nobody talks about them anymore.

Dude/dudette, what bands do you listen to?
And is your hair all floppy at the front and spiky at the back, like the most overrated artist ever who drew the image in your avatar?

onto bands i listen to, this is what i have on my myspace:

I'm a closet Dashboard Confessional fan. Does that count for something?

Anyway, I'm gonna be nice and actually recommend something this guy might like: you should check out Straylight Run. They're pretty 'emo' if you're using your definition of the term, and make some pretty sounding noises sometimes.

I have no problems with whiny, angsty teens. I think that's nornal.

Once you get to college however, if you don't stop your bitching I will tend to throw the term "right-faced cunt" at emo kids who haven't grown up.

So embrace your emoness while you can, because once you're 18 your bitchig better stop mighty quickly.

I like System of a Down which makes me a minority on this forum but I don't feel the need to start a topic about it.

Plus a lesson for all people: NEVER listen to Brand New. It's bad for your health. They are one of the worst bands I have ever had the displeasure of hearing. Come on the lead singer starts crying at the end of the song. Man I don't mind if a song means a lot to the person singing it and it makes them feel very emotional but don't put the crying on the actual CD. Jeez get a grip.

The solution to that is not to put the pics on Deviantart. I would probably be proud if someone used one of my pics as an avatar, however, to my knowledge, it hasn't ever happened.

Sturge, towards the early hours of the morning after a few days of not sleeping, shit happens.

Is that list of bands a list of every band he has heard and didn't not like? That seems much more likely. The list to me screams 'This band, that I haven't heard much material by, if any material at all seems like it'll get me scene points if I name drop it'.

Rizzo guy, if you can ever afford it, totally do come to england. It would be glorious.
Oooh! Can I point something out? Rizzo likes quite a few of those bands listed by the silly teenage child. Even the really bad ones. But Rizzo is still cool.
Because he isn't a silly whiny teenage child.

ONE MORE THING.
If my behaviour in this thread has given anybody the impression that it's okay to double, triple or quadruple post, insult and belittle people one this forum, IT IS NOT.
I'm just a bit of an ass and frequently break forum rules and guidelines.
Do not behave like me, you will not get away with it. I shouldn't be getting away with it. Infact, people often tell me off if you look carefully.

Would it be ok if Cat Power did it?

I can't listen to emo. Too loud. Hurts my skin. And fast and stuff.
Like old school rock and roll and new punk is cool. But not emo. Its about being sad, but its too fast and lame. I prefer my depression ultra-literate, Bob Dylan, or Tom Waits. I was depressed before it was emo, dammit
Also Nick Cave could shoot emo in the face

So basically, i like Bright Eyes, my pain is deeper then yours, and i'm not sure what i'm saying just to piss people off anymore

At least he's not a metalhead. Why is a comic about indie rock infested with metal fans? I'm not kidding about this bit

Nah
I mean i listen to Bright Eyes and all sorts of sad music that nobody calls emo
so when they show music videos here i try to watch a few emo videos so i can make a fair judgement
but most just sound fast and lame
Panic at the Disco (which i almost wrote as 'Panic at the Sisco', which would be a Star Trek emo band) sound almost cool
but its easier to just hate on emo and not listen to it
i mean that unsarcastically
and i had to listen to the latest Dashboard Confessional album. twice.

For those of you who DON'T read the Sydney street press (all of you, i'd guess) here's what i said. I hated it:

Quote
Chris Carraba, your days as the soundtrack to clichéd teen angst are numbered. The producers of the OC have figured they can pay indie bands half the money for music twice as good and get cred in the process. You can stop whining non-specific, nonsensical lines about failed relationships. You can stop trying to be ‘cool’ by bringing in Bob Dylan producer Daniel Lanois or making your songs sound a bit like Coldplay (who were never cool). You’re not even the best at whining- that honor belongs to Conor Oberst, who can write a decent melody. You’re a grown man. Get a family and go away.
This is an album designed to be listened to over and over, with lyrics to be scribbled on notebooks and sung together at the famously intimate Dashboard live shows. The songs all sound the same- weak, 4th generation rock that propels pathetic choruses about losing your first boyfriend and crying in your room. Its pretty dire stuff, though the amount of pain Carraba can force into a syllable is kinda interesting. He’s got a voice that moves from ‘tortured’ to ‘wistful’ without missing a beat (not that the beats are worth hitting).
I’d like to replace every copy of this CD with The Cure’s Disintegration and show the emo kids what teen angst should sound like.

So when you're referring to emo, you are referring to the shitty misnomered "emo" that is really just whiny rock instead of emocore. Gotcha.

Psst. I haven't ever heard anybody label Panic At the Disco as emo. Just shit.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

i realize a lot of those bands i listed aren't "emo", a lot are hardcore punk, ska punk, and pop punk.  yes.  i never said all i listen to is "emo" music.

i tried listening to Straylight Run once and i didn't really like it.  but like, i also listen to Chiodos, Circa Survive, and The Receiving End of Sirens, so i'd probably like it now.

Yah
I mean... i guess i'd like real emo if i found it, but then all my friends would make fun of me
i'd rather track down everything Craig Finn has ever sung on ever, and listen to sad but slightly upbeat songs about books written by people in Glasgow

Straylight Run aren't emo either.
And isn't that the band who's hot front chick is the sister of a dude from taking back sunday was was boning a guy from brand new who then boned another dude from taking back sunday making them write shitty spiteful songs about eachother?

I'm quite suprised I have never met a silly whiny teenage child who listens to cursive. Who are pretty much the best band in the world.

At least he's not a metalhead. Why is a comic about indie rock infested with metal fans? I'm not kidding about this bit

Because QC contains approximately 900% more positive and/or amusing references to metal than any non-genre specific webcomic, most of which are crap anyway.

Yes! I'm sure I remember this...
She's Michelle Nolan...
And her brother is...chris nolan? from taking back Sunday. And she was dating Jesse Lacey from Brand New. But cheated on him with...
No...
Wait...
She was dating Adam Lazara from taking back sunday!
And the girl who was dating Jesse Lacey cheated on him with Chris Nolan from Taking Back Sunday, and then Nolan wrote 'best friends means I pull the trigger' and Jesse Lacey wrote 'Seventy times 7'!!!!

...
Why do I know this?

Edit: The songs were written at about the same time I believe.  The reason they have the same lyric is because it's from an argument they had on the phone.
Which proves that whiny teenage children compulsively write songs about everything.

This sounds awesome and hilarious.
All I've got are the Fiery Furnaces and Franz Ferdinand writing songs that may or may not be about each other, except for the ones that obviously are.
Which isn't as funny

No, I think it's the band that the old second vocals guy from Taking Back Sunday founded and recruited his sister for when he realized Taking Back Sunday sucked.

Or something like that. Some guy I talked to online would go on incessently about the gossip in emo circles.

Wait, I was wrong. His name is JOHN NOLAN.
Not chris.

And Adam Lazara cheating on Michelle Nolan, so they broke up. And this is why John left taking back sunday.

And the song John Nolan wrote was 'There's no I in Team'.

And John Nolan and Jesse Lacey made up (and probably made out) and now they just talk shit about taking back sunday.

WOW! Drama.
