Metalcore = Hardcore metal?

No, it isn't. Hardcore basically starting with people taking punk and making it harder and faster. That's a massive simplification but you get the idea. The two have borrowed a lot from each other over the years to the point where it can be hard to tell the difference with some of the subgenres but they're still mostly pretty distinct.

I have noticed that plenty of hardcore bands have metal tendencies (i.e. Rise Against, guitar harmonies) without sounding anything like...I dunno, Metallica.

as for the x, it represents the 24th letter in the alphabet. oh, and to separate two words, instead of having to use an underscore. that's about it.
