Most are crap.? The only one I really listen to is Streetlight Manifesto.

Not bad... but Darkest Hour is not quite crap, at least in my opinion.
(But Aiden is!  God, I cannot stand that group.)

Khar, you are not dismissing Jawbreaker, you are dismissing Fireman. Please listen to one of their (universally lauded) previous albums before you call them generic pop-punk. I don't know why anyone is bothering to argue with you, if that's your only perception of Jawbreaker.

i wish victory was still a good label.

Victory was never a good label. It's had one or two good bands over the years I'll give you that, but come on, One Life Crew? The only change is that these days Victory's nothing but crap without the occasional Deadguy record to break things up. Sadly unlike Revelation, which used to be awesome but is now utter drivel.

one life crew ruled.

This is my absolute favorite Victory Records-related news item ever.

That was truly wonderful.

P.S; I love Between The Buried and Me and Darkest Hour but other than that most of the bands on Victory Records (I'd like to single out Hawthorne Heights and Aiden in particular) sure could stand to suck a lot less.

There's actually a music store around my part of the Earth which has a section just for "Post-Rock," so I though that'd be the place to find "Spiderland." They didn't have it  :-( I felt like going up to the counter and lecturing them.

Nope. There's still time for someone to recommend Spiderland again, there will probably be a discussion of some other political thing (especially if someone brings up Rock the Vote or something), there will be another recommendation, and people will still be arguing about Jawbreaker, cos that is the way of forums!

They probably play orc.

Chaos, surely.

Is that Dicks album in print these days? All I've ever managed to track down is the retrospective Alternative Tentacles put out, which is amazing but I never saw why they didn't just make it a discography. They really ought to be up there with the greats of 80s hardcore, but for some reason they've always been regarded as secondary.

Just listen to Skyclad and you are absolved.

It's my cure for everything.

Do, however, limit yourself to Skyclad with Martin Walkyier.

do you like 60s/70s singer-songwriters? (try saying that four times very quickly...)

why not try bob dylan, phil ochs, neil young, gram parsons, van morrison, tim buckley or john cale?

yeah, sure. i hardly have any Dylan stuff.... its only 4? 5? gigs of my music collection. And i'm not even wearing my Dylan shirt today, so i'm hardly a fan
er, one of my Dylan shirts
and i lost my large Dylan's sheriff badge
And i only own one book on him (a collection of academic writing) though i've read a few more
i think my point is that if there was a fight for biggest Dylan fan on this board I might be in the running

er
so those are all great guys and great bands and Van Morrison's 'Astral Weeks' makes me weep openly, and if anyone else needs non-indie pop recomendations I can make a whole list of guys like that
but its kinda something i know about

I doubt you'll like my music, but ah well.

No Doubt-ska/punk/newwave/pop/rock (and their latest album has influences of reggae and dancehall)
Red Hot Chili Peppers-hardcore funk/nu metal/punk funk/newwave
Sublime-ska/punk/reggae/hiphop/gangsta rap/surf/folk
Garbage-electric pop with an oftentimes harder sound..
Blondie-newwave/punk with oftentimes pop/rock disco influenced songs
Incubus-alternative/nu metal
Dance Hall Crashers-third wave/ska pop
Horrorpops-pop punk/rockbabilly/surf

I'm really into Metric right now.... Poster of a Girl & Live It Out are good... Garbage songs like Run Baby Run, Why Do You Love Me?, Supervixen.... No Doubt-Spiderwebs, Total Hate, Sunday Morning..

Red Hot Chili Peppers-Fight Like A Brave, On Mercury, Give It Away, Around the World
Sublime-Saw Red feat. Gwen Stefani, What I Got, Doin' Time, Santeria (oftentimes heralded as the "Nirvana of ska")

Blondie-Sunday Girl, Maria

Toots and the Maytals-Monkey Man. feat Gwen Stefani, Reggae Got Soul (its rumored toots and the maytals were the first band to ever use the word "reggae")

Oh and I'm really into Queen right now too, I'm sure everyone knows who they are =P

One of the conditions of my last relationship was that I didn't like RHCP

An Aussie sketch comedy show ran a skit about how they always play the same songs. I saw a rerun from 2 years ago, and its even more relevant now!
They do have some good songs, but most of the bands on your list are hard to avoid... and with Incubus I've tried. Note: Don't recomend me nu-metal, because it is not music. Its not even anti-music. Its just wrong.

To answer the original question, since some of this musicry is too over my head to be able to form a reasonable response: I actually just recently made this transition. A freind of mine who i carpooled with for about six months listens predominately to hardcore and metal, and over time he managed to get me into those genres by slowly easing me from the lighter, more melodically driven stuff i liked or could stand to some of his more ridiculous favorites.

I remember at the beginning he was playing for me things like Against Me!, Bear vs shark, and Black Flag. Every once in a while he'd play something by Dillinger Escape Plan or Converge just to mess with me. Then he discovered i liked Explosions In The Sky, so he showed me Pelican and Isis. At some point, i suddenly took a liking to Minor Threat, and he spent a lil while showing me various 80's hardcore and 90's power violence bands. Some elapsed time later, an i'm liking The Locust and An Albatross. Even more elapsed time later, i went to my first Converge concert. Was teh GVIM. Most fun part is avoiding the madmen(& women) running around flinging their arms about wildly. They gotta keep the crowd in line.

Zo, if that helps. Right now my tastes are largely in the realm of post-rock, with an appreciation for pop(indie or otherwise) and hardcore/metal.

Short of having a freind with opposing musical tastes to spend a lot of time with, i'd just download like mad. Give everything a listen. Keep stuff you hate in your library, so you can check back later. Or make fun of it.

I recently discovered A Tribe Called Quest. That may help you with th hip-hop. Thas about as far as i am into that realm.

I gunna havta check out some o you people's lists, though. Clearly i got a lot to learn. : P

Thaz it fer moi.

And just for shits, check out King Crimson's In The Court of the Crimson King and/or The Power To Believe. Then start checking out Yes's pre-1980s material ("Owner of a Lonely Heart" can kiss my ass, but albums such as Close to the Edge, The Yes Album and their s/t 1969 debut, among others, are nothing short of pure aural awesome). Frank Zappa is also rather good, but despite how great he could be on one album, he could be rather shitty on another. I'd say allmusic.com is actually pretty accurate in their ratings of his albums.

I'm going to be a horrible nerd and wonder if Stephen King's Crimson King was inspired by the band. Knowning him i'm guessing 'yes'. Or Yes.

If everyone else here insists on suggesting Slint's Spiderland to anyone and everyone asking for recomendations, then I'll have to insist on suggesting the Ramones' first album to anyone and everyone. In fact, check out bothe albums.

Thanks to the magic of the internet, i've got more Ramones then i know what to do with, including great weird shit like them doing My Back Pages. Giant files with evverything an artist has ever done = fun.

I've got a friend who knows of metal and MOR and Zappa, but i don't have THE TRUE METAL SPIRIT or whatever. And he's been promising me Iron Maiden for ages

The Hold Steady name drop the Dillinger 4/D4 alot. Are they worth it? I'll do anything the Hold Steady tells me to, so i might buy an album

If you're a fan of power-pop and you have yet to hear either Milk 'n Cookies or The Pillows, then stop wasting your time here and search those bands out! (The Pillows might be kinds tricky, seeing as they're from Japan. Check out some torrent sites, and be forewarned that everything before Please Mr. Lostman has a certain balls-lessness that was solved once the guitarist found himself a distortion pedal.)

I am not a metalhead by any stretch of the imagination, but getting into Iron Maiden was pretty much the best thing I ever did, musically speaking. Mostly because when I mentioned to my friends that I didn't really know much Maiden, they would beat me and make me recite all the lyrics for Rime of the Ancient Mariner hanging upside down.

Which was totally worth it.
