Last time we went through this we were bogged down on an argument concerning whether classic rock was defined by sound or era. Reading through this thread, it seems that it is defined by era (which is to say: Classic Rock = Dad Rock), so i guess i'll have a crack at this.
The Beatles - I think this goes without saying, but i've often ran into peoplewho haven't listened to them, or only some of the singles. My favourite on (and favourite album of ever) is Abbey Road, but Sgt Pepper's is probably a better starting point.
Led Zeppelin - All of their albums (except maybe In Through the Out Door) are realy good. I am very partial to the first two albums (I and II) from their more Bluesy era, but if you like T-shirts with dragons, then IV might be more your thing.
The Beach Boys - They were quite good, but their albums often lacked consistency, a singles compliation would be ideal to start, aloong with Pet Sounds.
The Rolling Stones - Pretty much everything they released up to and including Exile on Main Street is superb. That last album is my favourite one by them.
Cream - Another band with a superbly consistent discography, very blues influenced (actually, it's just blues), Eric Clapton with an afro and a ginger for a drummer. I am partial to Disraeli Gears, but any will probably do.
The Velvet Underground - Released 4 albums (some people insist that there is a fifth, but these people are just stupid), all superb. My favourite one is the third one "The Velvet Underground", but this isn't a very popular opinion, so i'd suggest you get them in chronological order: "The Velvet Underground and Nico"---->"White Light/White Heat"---->"The Velvet Underground"---->"Loaded" adn then the outtakes compilation "VU". Possibly one of the most important bands in the history of the 20th century.
Derek and The Dominos - Another band with Eric Clapton, released one studio album and one live one. The Studio album "Layla and other assorted love songs" is Clapton's finest in? my opinion, thanks in not a small part by Duane Allman's superb slide guitar playing. Layla is the big hit, but i think i like Bell Bottom Blues best.
I was going to do some other bands but i forgot which
And for the record, fuck "Owner of a Lonely Heart." Why? 'Cause the 80's suck.
