These following Yes albums have my seal of approval:

Close to the Edge (a.k.a. one of the best goddamn albums EVER!!!!)
The Yes Album
Going For The One
Fragile
Relayer
(a.k.a. the album that got me into Yes)
s/t 1969 debut

And for the record, fuck "Owner of a Lonely Heart." Why? 'Cause the 80's suck. The albums I listed date from 1969 to 1977. And if you like any/all of them, maybe then will you be ready for the onslaught of pretense known as Tales From Topographic Oceans.

Also, Black Sabbath's first six records are pure guitar-driven kick-ass! (That's right, I just used "kick-ass" as a noun.)

Between the Buried and Me aren't metal. Not even something you can have a 'what is emo?' argument about. Not metal. Nuh. Nuh-uh-uh. Elements of metal? Yes. Metal? No.

There are a few good reasons to get greatest hits albums. One is if you are going to see a band you're unfamiliar with live (say you're going for the support act) and wish to enjoy the set: the best-of is likely to contain a goodly number of songs that might be included in their set: live albums also are good (ideally better) for this, but sometimes the live albums are out of date, and in a lot of cases, except for famous live albums, they're much scarcer. For example: say you've never heard any motorhead songs except Ace of Spades, but you're going to a festival where they'll be playing. You want to get an intro to them and learn some songs without splashing out on their whole discography: you could get the fantastic 'No Sleep Till Hammersmith', but that only has songs they wrote up till '81. You'd be better off getting 'The Best of Motorhead'. I own that same album, for the second good reason to buy best-ofs: completeness. I got it because it has all three tracks from the St. Valentines Day Massacre EP (which goes for about ?20 as a vinyl 7"...superior yes and I will one day own it) and four otherwise unreleased live tracks. Plus it was like four quid. Same goes for Hawkwind: their discographies complete fucking huge and incomprehensible, and some of the (numerous) compilations/best-ofs contain otherwise extremely hard to locate material. It's like with tribute albums. I don't have a burned copy (no money to nazis lol) of Visions...A Tribute to Burzum because I like Burzum, I have it because I love Ewigkeit and it's the only place their cover of Ea, Lord of the Depths has ever appeared, to my knowledge anyway.

Well, the greatest hits thing worked the only time I ever did it (Pitchshifter), so meh. Also, with live set/best-of match-up, it probably heavily depends on the band and how the compilations been put together. If the band selected their own favourite for the best of, it's likely to match the live set more closely. Similiarly, the more obscure a band is (ie the less bona-fide 'hits' they have) the more likely a match is as well. For example, my favourite band, Skyclad: if one takes their live album (Another Fine Mess) and their first compilation/retrospective (Old Rope), you'll see 9 out of 12 songs on the first are on the second. Which is certainly a good comprimise on basically buying their entire discography, had you been new to them at one of the shows on the tour on which AFM was recorded. Good point on the latest album thing: depends on the recency of the compilation I suppose. Also, I'm mainly thinking of bands with pretty large back catalogues (8-10 albums or more). They tend to include a smaller proportion of new material because they accumulate more and more songs they pretty much have to play or the crowd kills them.  Looking at that Motorhead best-of again, I think in the times I've seen them they've probably only played six or seven tracks not on here. It is a two CD however. There's probably a core of nine or ten songs that Motorhead plays every single time they perform, which are all on this compilation, compared to newer bands that might have only one or two 'essential' tracks (to keep it on metal, for example, 3 Inches of Blood fans will only expect two songs as definites at their shows).

By the way, eye guy, you should probably listen to Motorhead, Hawkwind and 3 Inches of Blood.

No later Springsteen than Born In The U.S.A., though.

Not true at all.  I much prefer Tunnel Of Love to Born In The U.S.A., and his next few albums were very good as well, though they usually failed to live up to his earlier work.  In the new millenium, he's created amazing material.  I've yet to hear The Rising, but I've heard magnificent things.  Devils and Dust was a fantastic folky album, and his latest, The Seeger Sessions has easily been my favorite album of the year.  It is simply stunning.

I'm pretty sure anyone who went to actual raves before they became a delapidated party cliche would be really annoyed by this thread.

Luckily that isn't me. I recomend The Best of Italo Disco Vol. II. This 80's Synth Pop trend in recomendations is going to make for a much better party too.

in my experience, people who recommend 'greatest hits' albums are clueless.

as are people who buy them.

well... it depends on the context. For alot of classic rock/50s/60s stuff a cheap Greatest Hits is enough. I don't need every single Animals album- i need We Gotta Get Out Of This Place and House of the Rising Sun, and for $10 i get that and 25 other songs so i'm good. Same with The Monkees, the Turtles, Hermann's Hermits, etc

for Dylan, i do try to recomend albums.... but the Greatest Hits can help me figure out which era of Dylan the person is most likely to like. For tom waits i just use Rain Dogs, since it transitions between his two periods

my metalhead friend says stuff like 'you cannot appreciate metal unless you study it your whole life and know everything about every band', which i think is a bit silly

I go to a lot of AHL games, and it seems that the music they play during warmups and between periods is just generic nu-metal and top-40 hip hop. Blech. I know that wouldn't get me pumped up, aside from wanting to kill whoever's blasting the shit over the PA.

Newish Motorhead. Fuck it, any Motorhead, ever.

3 Inches of Blood? I'd recommend them for almost any situation ever.

Ummm, pretty much any thrash band ever would help, I'd think. Maybe newer bands like Unearth and Lamb of God, as well.

As for the more classic stuff, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Sabbath, Anthrax.

Making generalizations about greatest hits collections doesn't makes sense. There are a lot of acts (usually pop or electronic ones) that aren't really about albums; they're about singles. For example, I'm a big fan of the stuff Holland-Dozier-Holland did for Motown but I'm not gonna go track down every Supremes, Four Tops, Martha and the Vandellas and Marvin Gaye record. I'm just gonna get one of the 8 hundred Motown comps.  Or take Hank Williams. All his recording was done before the idea of "the album" had really been popularized. If you're interested in his stuff you get a 40 Greatest Hits and unless you want to track down everything he's ever done you can probably stop there. I don't know if it'd be considered a greatest hits record but the Field Mice record that gets recomended (and they only one you'll ever be able to find since the initial recording weren't widely distributed and and a lot of their best stuff was on 7''s) is a compilation.

And then there are always artists who were musically important but whom you might not love enough to go buy every album they made. If that band didn't have a seminal album it makes sense to just buy a comp. Theres a huge list of artists for whom a complilation is a good recomendation.

But I totally don't think Dylan is one of them. Besides, isn't the guy just going to download what you recomend? If no one is spending money theres no reason not to recomend three albums.

If you like ELO, you'll love "Yes" and "Uriah Heep"

You'll probably also like "Rush"

If you like Deep Purple also check out the first couple of "Rainbow" albums, Richie Blackmoor with Ronnie James Dio, classic stuff.

I know this thread is old...but I OPENED for Count Basie in my hometown, Folsom, and there's no band I'd recommend before themn./

I also opened for the Chick Corea trio in North texas...their new recording are SUPERB. Their newest album is on Strech Record's label now, and it is neeeaaaaat.

I'd also recommend Digable Planets...more as sort of a fusion jazz than anything. It was really my intro into decent hip-hop. Some good artists that are pretty close would be Madlib, Beat Junkies, or Bahamadia.

And on teh more obscure list...R?yksopp. Particularly the track Psychedelish.
Yes my firends...that ever lovely and obscure genre known as ACID JAZZ. For that particular niche, I would also recommend "The Quiet Boys - Everybody Loves the Sunshine," and for the fan of John Coltrane and for a more...eh...smooth experience, "Pharoah Sanders - Astral Traveling" (you might want to get really stoned for that one, though) is eeeeexcellent.

...This is all, of course, overlooking the obvious Rat Pack members (if your don't know who they were, Google is your goddamn friend you lazy ass) and the classics whi9ch have been mentioned before this here post.

I also find New York Voices to be an easily accessible jazz group...they oerforn many songs that span across african-based jazz to big-bang style....and an awesome album of jazz compositions of songs written by Paul Simon....veeery aweome, IMO.

I am too drunk to coninue. Acarry on.

EDITR: As much as I like to get into punk, ska, indfie, whatever...Jazz is always my standard by whichb I judge all other tyhpes of music. Dunno if thatsb god or not. HE he

Recommending and introducing are not the same thing. I stand by my statement stating that they're a good way to get a feel for the different sort of sounds from different eras, so long as the artist in question is prolific enough. Like Mr. Eyeball Kid said, "but the Greatest Hits can help me figure out which era of Dylan the person is most likely to like."

An example is an artist like Tom Waits, who released a bunch of albums throughout many years-Blood Money is not the same as Rain Dogs which is not the same as Closing Time. I won't (generally, there are exceptions) download songs or albums unless it's from a label or artist official site, so the "why recommend one when you can just download all of them" point is moot.

I am sorry but I had trouble reading past this. It was like the "I" was a stake driven into the ground and my eyes were magnetically drawn from it, struggling to get away but only being able to get as far as "U.S.A." before being drawn back to the start again. In fact, I'm pretty sure these words are burned into my retinas just from sheer repetition.

The best umm best of cd (how's that for repetition) I've seen is Gamma Ray's "Blast from the Past". I think they did it because they got fucked over by their label or something and didn't own the rights to their back catalogue. They basically re-recorded all the good songs from their early albums and released them on a double cd pack.  It's really good to hear a track like "Heading for Tommorow" with decent production and Kai Hansen on vocals. Iced Earth did a similar thing with "Days of Purgatory" (a lot of their old demo era stuff, from when the band was called 'purgatory').

Most of the stuff off Days of Purgatory is far, far better with Barlow on vocals and better sound quality. The Days of Purgatory version of Stormrider (coincidentally) is one of my favorite songs ever.

some other cool stuff i'd recommend would be the directions in music record. its a live record celebrating miles davis and john coltrane. the band is herbie hancock, michael brecker, roy hargrove, john pattituci and brian blade.
john pattituci's record "now" is really cool too.
the keith jarret trio, with jack de jonet and gary peacock have some really great recordings
wayne shorter live at the vanguard is totally awesome and has scott la faro on bass.
basically i think that live jazz records are where its at.

Last time we went through this we were bogged down on an argument concerning whether classic rock was defined by sound or era. Reading through this thread, it seems that it is defined by era (which is to say: Classic Rock = Dad Rock), so i guess i'll have a crack at this.

The Beatles - I think this goes without saying, but i've often ran into peoplewho haven't listened to them, or only some of the singles. My favourite on (and favourite album of ever) is Abbey Road, but Sgt Pepper's is probably a better starting point.
Led Zeppelin - All of their albums (except maybe In Through the Out Door) are realy good. I am very partial to the first two albums (I and II) from their more Bluesy era, but if you like T-shirts with dragons, then IV might be more your thing.
The Beach Boys - They were quite good, but their albums often lacked consistency, a singles compliation would be ideal to start, aloong with Pet Sounds.
The Rolling Stones - Pretty much everything they released up to and including Exile on Main Street is superb. That last album is my favourite one by them.
Cream - Another band with a superbly consistent discography, very blues influenced (actually, it's just blues), Eric Clapton with an afro and a ginger for a drummer. I am partial to Disraeli Gears, but any will probably do.
The Velvet Underground - Released 4 albums (some people insist that there is a fifth, but these people are just stupid), all superb. My favourite one is the third one "The Velvet Underground", but this isn't a very popular opinion, so i'd suggest you get them in chronological order: "The Velvet Underground and Nico"---->"White Light/White Heat"---->"The Velvet Underground"---->"Loaded" adn then the outtakes compilation "VU". Possibly one of the most important bands in the history of the 20th century.
Derek and The Dominos - Another band with Eric Clapton, released one studio album and one live one. The Studio album "Layla and other assorted love songs" is Clapton's finest in? my opinion, thanks in not a small part by Duane Allman's superb slide guitar playing. Layla is the big hit, but i think i like Bell Bottom Blues best.

I was going to do some other bands but i forgot which

well you could have the power ballads, which do get you pretty pumped-i listen to boston, journey, etc at the gym, or you could also go with some really fast uptempo hardcore like ds-13, strife, artimus pyle, fucked up,etc. i guess you have to choose between stuff thats really inspirational or stuff that will get you hyped up and a little bit agressive. its like how my mix tape starts off with boston and journey and peter cetera when i'm doing the cardio to keep me going and then when i'm doing the weights its usually hardcore stuff especially stuff with chunky breakdowns like earth crisis or avail or born against.

Guys, I have to do a Jazz solo sometime next month.  And yes.  I listen to a bit of jazz, but not enough to pick out a quality solo out of the mess.

I'd have to hear your range, but "My Funny Valentine" might be a good song for an old standard with not too bad of a range.

I just got the remastered Brave Murder Day by Katatonia and it is severely good!

YOB and Jesu are both extremely excellent to my ears.

Looking at that Motorhead best-of again

Which one? I've seen two or three different Motorhead "best ofs" in stores. I picked up "The Very Best Of...", which I think was mostly pre-1983 or so.

Europe's "The Final Countdown". Grand fun, and not just because it popped up on Arrested Development

Er... i used Waits as a counter-example, since Rain Dogs runs the gamut from 'grim reapers' (Singapore) to 'grand weepers' (Downtown Train, Time).... its a perfect midpoint album.
But with stuff like Motown or Hank Williams, i'd rather pick up a cheap compilation (how can you go wrong with 40 Tempatations songs for $10?) then a non-existant 'album'

Are there any good record label compilations for stuff like metal and good hip-hop?

Now when you say you like 50s pop, what do you mean by that? Pat Boone, Buddy Holly?

If it's the latter, I would heartily recommend Kaiser George and the Hi-Risers. If this is true, I will make a much more detailed list later.

As for downloading... with stuff like bargain bin country and Motown and 'oldies' comps, the time i'd spend downloading 18 songs and getting some sort of context is worth more then the $2 or $10 it costs
Alot of the greatest hits have detailed linear notes... i've got one for Midnight Oil with a great bit by some famous Aussie novelist
also Greatest Hits help select the songs that are presumably the best/most well known

I have NEVER met anybody in person who claims to like punk AND likes Iggy Pop. Actually, every time I try to talk to somebody about Iggy Pop, they say 'He's old and shit'. I mention the Stooges and they ask 'What, you mean like, the three stooges?'. I ask what the best punk band of all time is. THREE people have given me this EXACT WORD FOR WORD answer. Granted, they live together so they'd have probably discussed it with eachother in the past.
"It's either the Sex Pistols or the Dead Kennedys. Probably the Pistols because they came first."

I nearly died.

Weird. Around these parts, pretty much every punk I ever met loves Iggy Pop, and finds the Sex Pistols dull and Dead Kennedys to be tops!

"Sabotage" by The Beastie Boys! If you do the "WOOOOOAH" as a group it would be rad.

"Money City Maniacs" by Sloan! If you clap along with the bridge and rock out during the solo it'll work.

Pretty much anything by The Waking Eyes, but "Watch Your Money," "Move On," and "Takin' The Hard Way" especially!

Something by The New Pornographers, like "Electric Version" or "Letter From An Occupant" or "The Slow Descent Into Alcoholism" or "Sing Me Spanish Techno"!

"Cheer It On" by Tokyo Police Club! If not that, "Nature Of The Experiment!"

"Habit Over Heart" by Novillero!

Some Springsteen? "Glory Days" perhaps?

Virtually anything off of the new album by Eagles Of Death Metal, Death By Sexy. I mean this suggestion the most. This is perfect.

"Sister Jack" by Spoon!

"Heard About Your Band" by Brakes!

"E-Pro" by Beck!

"You Really Got Me" by the Kinks!

"Dugout" by Ladyhawk!

"Working Fulltime" by The Constantines!

"99 Problems" by Jay-Z! I especially suggest the Grey Album version!

"Cowbell" or "Insistor" by Tapes'n'Tapes!

"Animals Jump" by Wax Mannequin, which is conveniently available for download in the LISTEN OR DIE thread, I believe!

"Entertain" or "Rollercoaster" by Sleater-Kinney!

"Prom Night At Hater High" or "New Girl" by The Long Winters!

I hope my list helps you!

Yeah.

I'm pretty sure you have to have "Sabotage" on there.
