Well, I doubt you're the only person who thinks that they're laughable, but your phrasing implies that they weren't always this. I'd have to say that my experience leads me to believe that this IS a solitary viewpoint. Care to expound on the matter?

Did you just insinuate that Zappa's metal?

No. I mean he's snobbish about them both.
I can understand saying 'you must study to enter the land of Zappa' but not going that nuts with the land of metal

Okay, Spiderland is now officially an old joke, unfunny, not lol-worthy, defunct, an ex-meme.

I think that their first album was really excellent (as generic of a statement as that is...).  The way they infused "math"-y metal with "emo"-ish influences was done really well, or at least very much to my liking, and I think the way they executed it was somewhat original. Starting with the Silent Circus (I believe that's their their second album), their stuff just started becoming boring experiments in technicality, and all of their softer breakdowns just started becoming really cheesy, poorly executed, and somewhat reminded me of any given sensitive Creed song.  It got worse from there on later albums, and now I'm pretty sure they're just a joke.

So basically, used to like them, then they became the Mars Volta of metal (over indulgent, boring, and frustrating, because they could probably do better)

I need some new Classic Rock (or similar music)

Hey,

Could anybody suggest me some new CD's?  I just started school and have exhausted my music collection.  My favorite classic rock bands are Boston, the Doobies, Creedence, Electric Light Orchestra, George Harrison, some Grand Funk Railroad, pretty much classic rock bands with great rock instrumentals (or instrumental parts).

Can anybody help me out?

Also, are there any decent Electric Light Orchestra-type bands out there?  I don't care what era, I'll listen to just about anything (other than country, my roomate plays that constantly and gives me a migrane.  Top 40 country I can't stand).

Thanks in advance,

I'm helping to put together a soundtrack for a shack party coming up in a few weeks, and a theme has been chosen. Rave music! That or the most danceable electronic music you can find, singing is A! OK! So recommend me some of the classic stuff.

The Spiderland thing is getting old, quick.

As for a good track, get the full ten minute version of 'Born Slippy' by Underworld. Ten minutes' worth of the best song rave spawned.

aight, first and foremost under the label of 'rave music', you need psytrance and lots of it

Man With No Name - (best album: Earth Moving The Sun)
Infected Mushroom - (The Gathering)
1200 Mics - any album
Gataka
Hallucinogen
Juno Reactor
Protoculture
Sesto Sento
Commercial Hippies
S.U.N. Project
Psytekk (the most recent stuff has the most accessible/dancy tunes on, I love it)
Astral Projection
Aphid Moon
pretty much anything off Iboga or Phonokol labels is a safe bet
also try and find the song 'final fantasy' by DNA (edit: or click right here)

if people don't mind a bit of cheese, a bit of classic 80s style synthpop might be good too, try the albums:

Rational Youth - Cold War Night Life
Elegant Machinery - A Decade Of Thoughts (pretty sure it's a best-of but it's a good un)
Lavantgarde - Inside Out
The Nine - Dreamland has a few decent tunes on it (tracks 6, 9 & 10 are personal favourites)
then anything by Anything Box, Cause & Effect, De/Vision, N.Ever.Endless, Neuropa, Tycho Brahe

or some more Futurepop-y tunes along the lines of Seize - Unbreakable; Epsilon Minus - 80s Boy; Apoptygma Berzerk - Eclipse; Code 64 - Leaving Earth; Covenant - Bullet; VNV Nation - Epicentre; Syrian - 'Vision' or 'She Is The Dark'; Nevarakka - Desire; Neuroticfish - The Bomb

sorry for typing a fuckin' essay, I'm drunk and gay for synthpop. post/pm if you want anything uploaded

Wow, that's a wealth of material I need to check out. Thanks amok. In response, any singles off those albums I should definately use? I might not have time to listen to all of that. By singles I mean the most danceable tracks, as I'm catering to an audience of not-very-diverse tastes. Thanks.

Aight, I'll go back through and do single tracks :D shoulda thought of that really. Haha.

Everyone thinks of the Penny Arcade guy when I pimp Tycho Brahe :( he was a really cool astronomer too! Band unrelated to both. Fortunately, since one is dead and the other's artistic merit is questionable :D

psytrance:

Man With No Name - Vavoom; Seratonin Sunrise
Infected Mushroom - Cities Of The Future
1200 Mics - Ecstacy; Mescaline; Acid For Nothing (9-minute trance remix of 'Money For Nothing' by Dire Straits, what :D)
Gataka - Blast From The Past
Hallucinogen - LSD
Juno Reactor - Navras (made famous by the rave scene in the Matrix)
Protoculture - Silicon Sunrise
Sesto Sento - Dive To Drive
Commercial Hippies - If You Can't Stand The Heat
S.U.N. Project - don't know many by name, get anything really
Psytekk - Space Syndrome
Astral Projection - Dancing Galaxy
Aphid Moon - K-9
pretty much anything off Iboga or Phonokol labels is a safe bet
also try and find the song 'final fantasy' by DNA (edit: or click right here)

synthpop:

Rational Youth - City Of Light
Elegant Machinery - To Live
Lavantgarde - Not Enough
The Nine - Breeze; I Won't (Album Version)
Tycho Brahe - Sanctity
De/Vision - Subtronic
N.Ever.Endless - Never Endless
Anything Box - Soul On Fire
Neuropa - New Faith

or some more Futurepop-y tunes along the lines of Seize - Unbreakable; Epsilon Minus - 80s Boy; Apoptygma Berzerk - Eclipse; Code 64 - Leaving Earth; Covenant - Bullet; VNV Nation - Epicentre; Syrian - 'Vision' or 'She Is The Dark'; Nevarakka - Desire; Neuroticfish - The Bomb

For 8 bit stuff, one of your stopping places should be 8bitpeoples.? I haven't listened to much of their stuff, so I'm don't know all the dance the dancey stuff, but PICOPICODISCO by USK is preety damn awesome.

Ummmmmmmm... if you want rave music, shouldn't you have some, Happy Hardcore or Eurobeat or something similarly silly? I'm not down with the scene, so I don't know anything to reccomend, but it just seems to be a necessity.  You may also find Ishkur's Guide to EDM to be handy.

Ha, whatever. I grabbed a copy of Sheik Yerbouti after listening to one song in a class that's not even on that album. I think it rocks. I don't get people who are pretentious about music... and especially his music. Basically, it's good if you have a sense of humor.

If you have Born To Run, you won't need any album for a while

I know i'm reaching Slint levels with this, but once you've listened to alot of classic rock get into The Hold Steady, who do interesting things with classic rock (give it better lyrics basically)

back to real classic rock.... Kansas, Eric Clapton, 'Derek and the Dominos' (which is the band Eric put together that did the album iwth 'Layla' on it, which was written to seduce George Harrison's wife... and succeeded), The Eagles, Steve Miller, Warren Zevon, Aerosmith....

Introducing people with a Greatest Hits really isn't a bad idea, especially if the artist in question is as prolific as those two are. It's nice going "Okay, I like these songs the best, and they are from this later period of work" so then you can get albums from that time and maybe work backward or something if you really like them too.

For Iggy Pop solo albums, Lust for Life and The Idiot are the essentials. I'd also recommend Soldier, even though that does not compare to the first two. One that often slips through the cracks which I would highly recommend is the Kill City Soundtrack. Officially listed as an album by Iggy Pop and James Williamson (the guitarist of Raw Power-era Stooges), it was Iggy in between the Stooges, his solo career and rehab, but it finds him experimenting with keyboards, weird melodies, and other new styles that would come in his late 70s solo albums.

It's a sad state of affairs that rave makes me think "candy raver" not "summer of love." But in any case, you absolutely cannot have a "rave party" without copious quantities of music by Underworld, The Prodigy and Orbital.

just put on the "homework" record by daft punk really loud and on repeat. it may not be rave but its very fun and will make people happy. and in the end, isn't that what we all want?

also, seeing as this is the music thread bit of the forum, isn't it ok for people to ask for recommendations on various types of music? though, i can understand that it gets annoying when someone starts slagging off bands and then their fans defend them to the death and it keeps going on and on in circles-the jawbreaker debate for example. but i think its nice to help people out if they want to get into something different. oh well, whatever.

Why does it have to be rave? There's plenty of indie-dance stuff that's great for dancing to even if it's not rave. 'Step On' by the Happy Mondays, the 12-inch version of 'Fool's Gold' by Stone Roses, 'Loaded' by Primal Scream...

And if you don't have all ten minutes of 'Born Slippy,' you suck!

Not to nitpick, tommy, but Hawthorne Heights aren't on Victory anymore. Actually, they're suing them!

I'd hope one can file a suit against a label for "making us sound like complete shit, even though to be honest, we are".
