I've got a couple of Nortt songs on mp3 I downloaded late last year, not bad what I've heard (Gudsforladt album) was really good.

If you want a nice little taster of Xasthur, they have a split out which is rather fabulous. I also recommend Xasthurs 'Funeral of Being' album as a cornerstone of the whole thing.

United by Heathen Blood is excellent.

Xasthur's worth checking out then?  I've been thinking about checking out some of Malefic's work but never got around to it.  I figure since you suggested it in this thread it's more of a BM/doom hybrid than straight-up BM.

I've always considered Acid Bath sludge rather than doom, but they are amazing.

Seriously Dax, what the fuck are you doing? Go back to taking all kinds of drugs and making amazing metal kthx.

A few more to add to the list.

Trouble-Everything. (Doom pioneers, just as essential as Candlemass, but somehow forgotten by a lot of doom fans)
Skepticism-Lead and Aether (best funeral doom ever)
Skepticism-Farmakon
Winter- Eternal Frost (One of the first death-doom bands)
Morgion-Cloaked by Ages, Crowned in Earth (American folksy death-doom)
Khanate-another O'Malley band
Esoteric-Subconscious Dissolution into the Continuum
Solitude Aeternus-Anything...trad doom, but still great
Virgin Black-Elegant...and Dying (very original gothic doom with male operatic vocals, piano, and cello)

And I basically second everything already mentioned. Even Type 0. They aren't necessarily doom, but they are very doomy, and as Khar pointed out, very amusing.
And I've always thought of Nortt as funeral doom with a black metal image. I dunno.

On a related note, while not actually doom, there are some great atmospheric sludge/post-metal bands out there like Pelican, Cult of Luna, and Callisto that have a definite doom influence.

Cult of Luna are for yes. They've gone a bit post-rock on their newer albums but they're still great.

I love this thread.

Xasthur is definitely worth checking out and it's a good suggestion for certain. Great band, very doomish in a BM way.

I see now you already suggested Trouble.  Thumbs up! Not like they can't be suggested more than once, as good as they are.
But seriously, Felix, your list was so exhaustive it was hard to think of other essentials that weren't already there.

I love this thread too!!!!

Also, Boris and Sleep are a lot more stoner then doom.

Black Sabbath is pretty 'stoner', so is Candlemass, Saint Vitus, Obsessed, Weedeater, Eyehategod, Goatsnake, Roachpowder, Obiat, etc. but they are all, including Boris and Sleep close enough to doom to be constituted as so I'd reckon.

Thats not the same Velvet cacoon who were the Eco Terrorists with the "Disselharp" is it :) I rememember they caused quite the stir a few years ago. I always thought they were more ambient then doom...

The same ones. :P They have released raw BM records, some which have a doomish flavor to them, folkish stuff, and ambient stuff as well.

Yeah, but they're not "pure doom" like PL early albums or MDB, they have a lot more sludge and drone influences. Plus, Sleep sings about weed insted of wanting to die (and Black Sabbath sings about both).

Early PL and MDB play death / doom, basically influenced by Winter. Not "pure" (I'm asusme you mean traditional) doom. Sabbath, Pentagram and early Cathedral are probably the best eaxamples of traditional doom I can think off.

PL and MDB aren't 'pure doom' either. :D haha..if you speak to doom enthusiasts many if not most would consider bands that emulate Black Sabbath to be "pure doom" and anything else, like PL, MDB, or as you suggested earlier Katatonia to be off-shoots of the 'doom genre'. And it really doesn't matter what you sing about lyrically, there are plenty of doom bands that sing about all sorts of things, whether it's weed, witches, space, medieval tyrants, truckers, etc. and not about "wanting to die" and they are still firmly within the doom genre. Doom is like the genre that it is part of - 'metal' - in that there are even sub-genres to the doom genre itself. Sludge, funeral doom, drone and stoner rock are often considered sub-genres of doom because they are so closely related to "pure doom".

You both are right, what I ment to say is that bands like Sleep, Boris, Electric Wizard, Cult of Luna and such are usually said to be stoner/sludge, although it's obvious that they have a lot of doom influences. Stoner and doom overlap in a lot of ways and it's kind of stupid to try and seperate the two, I'm sorry I brought it up.

The whole "songs about wanting to die" thing is a private joke of mine and a few friends.

Not so much PL, but when I think of major influences for MDB, I can't help but come back to the fact that, in large part, MDB are a metal version of Swans. 'Transcending (Into the Exquisite)' pretty much IS a Swans track...coming off that point, any open minded doomster should probably really enjoy Swans.

There is a band I've heard a little bit of called Bongzilla that is a pretty good doom/stoner metal band.

Also, I'm not sure if Theatre Of Tragedy exactly falls into this category, and from a few recent songs I've heard I think they might possibly suck now..but their older stuff is DEFINITELY worth checking out.

I can enjoy a few songs off of Karmacode, but really, LC's older stuff is much better (I particularly like Unleashed Memories). The new stuff is almost like a "where the heck did this come from?!" smacking you upside the head.

Hey guys, I was just wondering if anybody knew of any other music around like Belle and Sebastian's "Night Walk".

It's really good music when I want to have an afternoon nap or for when I'm studying, and it just kinda makes me sit back and go "Wow...Everything is right with the world".

I have alot of George Winston, however you can't just listen to the same piano pieces all of the time!

So, any ideas?

(Oh, another good one is "Sunshine And Clouds And Everything Proud" By CYHSY)

Recommend Me Some Indie Pop

I've been listening to waaaayyyy too much drone and metal recently and I want something more in the vein of new indie pop right now.  I'm familiar with Broken Social Scene, Stars, the Cardigans and a few others.  I'd like something with pop-minded musical arrangemens but nothing obnoxiously twee or lyrically saccharine.  Recommend away and I'll put BitTorrent to work!  Thanks in advance.

Ok, serious time.

I don't know if I'd include a lot of what Camus put in as indie pop, definately not Animal Collective anyway.  But here's my list:

A.C. Newman
The New Pornographers
The Shins
The Unicorns
Architecture in Helsinki
Belle & Sebastian
All Girl Summer Fun Band
The Boy Least Likely To
Fiona Apple
Feist
I'm From Barcellona
Islands
The Pippettes
The Polyphonic Spree
Sloan
The Softies
Stars
Zumpano
Le Tigre
Liz Phair (Exile In Guyville)
The Notwist
The Flaming Lips

Most of those are pretty blatantly pop. though you mentioned Broken Social Scene, so you may want more rock oriented stuff

But uh, given the choice... I'd just keep listening to metal.

I just downloaded more albums by My Dying Bride, Sunn O))), Xasthur, Opeth, Arch Enemy, Immortal, Agalloch, Boris and Mastodon .

I like metal a lot, but I really do need a new direction for a little while .  I recently rediscovered the Shins, specifically their debut Oh, Inverted World.  I've also been digging the Flaming Lips in general this week.

Has anyone heard Asobi Seksu's latest record btw?  It's amazing.

I'll recomend some older stuff:
My Bloody Valentine- circa 1987, Before they perfected and defined an entire genre of music MBV were a pretty good but run-of-the-mill indie pop band. Check out the Strawberry Wine EP

Saint Etienne (indie-pop dance I suppose)

Heavenly (Khar always comments about this band. Apparently there is another Heavenly. I'm pretty sure you'll be able to tell the difference though)

The Field Mice
The Pastels
Talulah Gosh

All these guys are definitely poppier than BSS. Possibly less edgy than the Cardigans. Still enjoyable though and in no matter challenging.

I presume you've heard of and listened to Yo La Tengo and Neutral Milk Hotel? If you haven't you should check out those two bands before downloading anything else mentioned on this thread.

And that Asobi Seksu album is pretty darn good. As it happens, I was indie-pop obsessed about a year ago and now that new Agalloch album has me listening to metal for the first time in a long while.

Edit: I totally forgot. It isn't indie. Its also from the 70's. The Best of Italo Disco vol. II from the label XYZ. Everyone should download this. Trust me.

jcknbl pointed out some good Sarah records stuff (Heavenly, Field Mice, and so on), and I'll add to that.? Definitely listen to some Heavenly, though, they are fantastic.? He also mentioned Talulah Gosh, which was an earlier band containing a lot of the people from Heavenly, also centered around the singer Amelia Fletcher.? Heavenly broke up when the drummer, Matt Fletcher, Amelia's brother, committed suicide.? After a while, they more-or-less reformed as Marine Research.? Sounds from the Gulf Stream by MR is probably one of my favorite records of all time.? After Marine Research broke up, Amelia Fletcher started a band called Tender Trap, which is still together.

Other Sarah bands worth listening to are: St. Christopher, Brighter and Blueboy (listed in ascending order of litheness).? The Orchids are another famous Sarah band, but I always thought they were a little boring.

For North American stuff, check out Cub!? Much more of a punk influence than something like the Field Mice (although they go well with Heavenly).? Along those lines, also check out Tiger Trap and Gaze.

Then there was Kindercore records.? Kindercore isn't around anymore because its founder were comically bad at running a business, but they managed to put out a lot of fantastic records from:? Masters of the Hemisphere, Dressy Bessy, Of Montreal, and so on.

For more recent stuff, I'd recommend the following:
The Lucksmiths
Math and Physics Club
The Snow Fairies
Colin Clary
Locas in Love
Paula Kelley
Bearsuit
Darren Hanlon
The Gazetteers

Okay I'll shut up now.

I love BM but I can't stand NSers and murderers, so that kind of cuts a couple vital bands out of what I'm willing to listen to, haha.  This is going to come off as totally sacreligious, because it is, but these days I prefer North American BM because of its cleaner production and almost-assured apolitical stance.

While we're at it, could somebody recommend me some early, seminal BM not steeped in Nazi ideology?  I've got Bathory, Immortal and Emperor (although Faust did knife a gay man for hitting on him, so I'm on the fence). I'm not touching Mayhem or anything Euronymous-influenced with a 10-foot pole, same goes for Graveland or anything on Deathlike Silence Records (with the possible exception of Burzum).  Thanks in advance.

If you'll make exceptions for Burzum, you might as well make exceptions for any band that has an ideology that you don't necessarily agree with or obviously don't subscribe to. That said, it's ashame if you're crossing NS bands off your list IMO due to their radical and usually ridiculous viewpoints. There are dozens of excellent bands within that sub-genre that deserve to be heard for musical reasons alone. I can seperate myself from their message and just listen to the music, and it's not like I'm supporting them by going out and buying their entire discography in most cases or getting their logo tattooed on my back.

That said, you should check out some of these bands:

Barathrum
Bifrost
Desaster
Bethlehem (first 3)
Thy Infernal

(ack..must go. I'll post more later.)
