Fiery Furnaces 2005 album Bitter Tea
« on: 20 Dec 2006, 03:20 »

Wasn't quite what I was expecting from them.

Has anyone else listened to it? Pretty intense stuff if you ask me.

I liked it a lot. Not as good as Blueberry Boat, in my opinion, but I still loved it. I also liked Rehearsing My Choir.

Blueberry Boat is pretty good. I haven't listened to Rehearsing My Choir. Haha, the albums are pretty different too. Jcknbl is right. My thread blows. ;p

Bitter Tea came out this year, not 2005.

I thought I replied to this by saying that everthing released after Blueberry Boat was, if memory serves, a big middle-finger to their label who wouldn't count Rehearsing My Choir as an album. Which is alright because I hardly count it as a coaster.

God help anyone who actually listened to that shit though.

Hey, I liked it. Even "Rehearsing My Choir." I don't listen to it so much anymore, but I'm pretty sure that for the month or so that I listened to it a lot, I wasn't just being willfully perverse; I actually liked it. In fact I'm almost certain.

Also, Bitter Tea is keen, and God help anyone who says otherwise.

Bitter Tea came out this year, not 2005.

Did it really? I wonder where I got the idea it came out in 2005?

On another note. Rehearsing My Choir was that shitty? Jesus christ. I'll have to see for myself, but thus far after these past couple days of listening the Bitter Tea i'm starting like this album better then Blue Berry boat.

Rehearsing My Choir was that shitty?

It's their worst album, sure, but it's not that shitty and I don't see why people have to hate on someone's grandma like that I mean that is just low

My Bitter Tea actually is a coaster (for most things but bitter tea, which I take with a lot of milk and two sugars for the record) and looks the part. Pictures most likely to come.

I thought the consensus was "Muppet," but whatever. God, you are such a sack of craig.

Bitter Tea has grown on me... there are bits like "And when i'm about to give up hope/beknownst with my telescope" that just hit me, and "Police Sweater Blood Vow" is actually pretty effecting if you think about it... when i saw the Furnaces last time Eleanor seemed pretty sad, and the "tell me baby what time is it now" just has me imaging her looking at Franz Ferdinand tour dates and trying to figure out exactly what time it is in wherever they're playing (yeah, she and Alex broke up, i think, but i'm i think that was written when they were together. unless Matt wrote it)

personally... there's a weirdness to it, 'cause right now i'm remembering the band i was OBSSESSED with before The Hold Steady (and a bit during my obsession with them), but beyond that they literally changed my life.  i was going through a serious slump - no job, no life-  but an obsesive review i wrote about them got me an interview with them for FasterLouder, which kinda started the ball rolling on me getting back into the swing of things and becoming a real, low level music journo parasite

http://www.fasterlouder.com.au/features/5107/  its not a bad interview. Matt sounds like a bit of a wanker on the phone

i could say alot about the Furnaces. i wasn't impressed by Bitter Tea at first, but its got some good, poppier songs then Blueberry Boat...

I shy away from Rehearsing My Choir because any album I feel like I have to treat like a textbook is automatically awful in my book. Do I really want to hear your Grandma's life story, Matt Friedberger?? Do I want to have to decipher the lyrics to figure out what's happening?? No no no.

Rehearsing My Choir is my second favorite Fiery Furnaces album next to Bitter Tea. I really have no problem with granny's voice; it's a lot more expressive then the siblings', I think.

People ask me why Blueberry Boat isn't number one... I don't know, it's mostly great, but it has a few stupid tracks that sort-of sour the flow for me... and Bitter Tea's instrumentation just packed a certain initial wallop, production-wise, that Blueberry Boat didn't.

People say Rehearsing My Choir is just inaccessible, and I get that, but to me it's just wacky Shatner-esque narration with some really great accompaniment... it stands alone from all their other albums in this respect, and that's why it isn't number one, but I honestly hope their next album does something similarly fucked-up.
