Author Topic: So I was thinking maybe I ought to be a musician  (Read 7101 times)

I was thinking, maybe. I was thinking (maybe) that I might want to be a musician. Music is a damn fine art form, though not one I've shown any particular talent for. I can read music and sort of play piano, and sort of play guitar, and sort of almost play a bit of harmonica, and I can maybe sing.

I was thinking of post-rock, whatever the hell that means.

Anyway I was considering making pretty music, most likely with my voice and Audacity or maybe my voice and my mother's iBook and GarageBand but that is such a sissy way to make music.

So my goal here would be make music and then get a small group of people to like it just enough to feel superior to those that don't. And then vanish from the public eye?

So guys what I'm sayin' here is maybe I ought to be a musician.

You need a good honest band name that people can believe in.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

Oedipus Sex is a name I've been shipping among various crowds for a while.
Take up the clarinet.  It's getting WAY popular in rock music.  That's a lie (EXCEPT FOR THE ISLANDS).  We could be friends anyway though.
If you already know how to read music, you're already at a jump start over John Lennon's musical ability.  He never learned how.
Good luck - music is awesome.

You say that with a tinge of longing, Johnny C.

Longing, as though for a long forgotten dream, or a lady who you once knew.

It doesn't matter, just record what you THINK it is using your harmonica, and we'll tell you how close you are.

That's a silly thing to do, seeing as all I can almost play on the harmonica is blues.

I totally imagine MathBluster with the "Deep Thoughts, By Jack Handey" Phil Hartman soothing voice.

Wait so you're letting something that happened 10 years ago ruin your quality of life? What are you, America? :psyduck:

I've never actually seen some one who has woken up with the unethical desire to become a musician- usually hits around noon. But seriously, just get an instument that you fancy and get together with some people and play.

Indie is the genre for you, I'd say.

It's in a constant state of flux because the indie taste dynamic has no stable equilibrium point.  Not like rock where you can stay at an equilibrium point for decades upon decades.

The likability of a band is inversely proportional to the amount of people who like it.  So no matter where you're starting point, you will spiral away from any number of repulsion points.  There are only three final destination points for indie bands.  There's the 'Obscurity graveyard' where most of them end up.  There's 'mainstream sellout', a mixed blessing.  And the truly lucky few get to become 'indie dinosaurs', but only if they retire around the peak of their popularity.  This follows from the 'Neil Young Theorem' which states 'it's better to burn out than it is to rust'.

There's also that even rarer fourth category, 'Critical legend'.  But that's only possible if you're consistently good for a long period, while being known in the mainstream, and keeping your indie cred.  This was way easier in the 60's when mainstream didn't suck quite as much, but it's nearly impossible now.
