Huh? What about the D major on the fourth, third, second, and first strings? I heard that called first position, and the first finger is on the second fret there.

That's just the first position for that chord. The second position is presumably the B-shaped barre chord at the 5th fret.

So... First position chords are the closest to the nut you can fret them? I really don't know the reasoning behind most of what I know, I am usually more interested in playing better than knowing the terminology. Though not knowing how to play in a certain key really made it difficult to improv without sounding horrible.

I'm sure that's what I've been told, that as far as frets, the first position is the first fret. As far as chords, the first position is the closest to the nut you can fret it, and second is the next closed, etc.

Are you talking about the open D chord? Because if you are, that would be considered open position because you're using an open string.

My collection isn't quite as impressive as some of the others here; my main bass is an Antoniotsai custom Vietnamese five-string bass which looks pretty, but has a slightly muddy tone. I also have a Warwick Streamer LX four-string bass, a Jay Turser four-string Hofner copy, a Hagstrom II vintage guitar, and an incredibly shitty Sorina Stratocaster. My amp is a Sunn Solarus from 1967.

EDIT: Forgot my Yamaha acoustic.

That thing is way too huge to steal. But if you do manage to, I'd suggest replacing the tubes; they'd never been replaced when I bought it and it crackles like a bitch, and I haven't found time to buy new ones yet....

Otherwise, a little Craigslist searching should get you a sweet deal; they pop up often, around $650.00.

Yeah, the D is open, G is at 2, B is at 3, E is at 2. So the open A with D,G,and B at 2 would be open A? What would the G major rooted on the 6th string be?

E 3
B 3 (or O)
G O
D O
A 2
E 3

Or bar the third fret and arrange "an E major" on the fourth fret

Oops, my bad, I meant what would it be called, I was going to list out the fret positions, but that one uses almost all the strings (I was taught to mute the D with the finger fretting the A, don't feel like thinking enough to see if it works both ways right now).

Are we talking about G chords?  I fret mine like this:

e|---3
B|---3
G|---0
D|---0
A|---x
E|---3

Sometimes I don't mute the A string and play the B note as well.  It depends on what I feel like doing.

The notes that make up G Major are G B and D, so there's no need to mute the D string. I never mude the A string because the B is the third so I may as well play it. Unless I wanted G5, in which case I'd just play the Power Chord on the third fret root on the 6th string.

I guess it was just the specific... voicing? that I first played it in was muting the D, voicing is the right word, right?

Whenever I do G5 in that vicinity, I just fret the G on the 6th and mute the A string, play down to third, I never even think about fretting it like I do all the other power chords. Funny how habits stick from the first songs you learn.

I generally use standard and DACGAE (ha ha ha, "gae") tuning. The latter is rad for Yonic Southish droney/math-rocky guitar parts.

On my album for Darryl's 24 hour challenge, I tuned my guitar to CCFBbEbG. It's C Standard tuning, but I doubled the low C. If I had a seven-string, it would've just been an easy switch to CCFBbEbGC. But I don't.

What do you mean? A set that starts with .17 or just 6 .17 strings? And wouldn't be a .17 string way to thick for a standard high E string?

I use it for acoustics, not electrics. Just pop on some heavy gauge acoustic strings and it works fine.

Well, I don't have an acoustic, so that's that, I guess.

I still don't believe that you could tune a .17 string to a high E. On on of my guitars I have a .12 string as the highest, and if i tune that to E, the tension seems really high. I imagine with a .17 it would be to high?

It just works. I can't really explain it.

Alternately, you could do D A D A D F if that's easier to get to with lighter strings (which it is)...

So basically this is a drop-tuning with the highest three stringes tuned up two, three and one halfsteps, respectively? Wile the C G C G C E is the same except that the highest string is tuned up two half steps? I'll try this tomorrow.

Nodaisho, that would still be an open G. The position goes by where the note that is furthest down the neck is - eg. a G barre chord would be in third position.

I'm looking for a new bass, preferably vintage, doesn't have to be in great or even good condition, as long as it plays...something I won't feel bad about beating up. Anyone have any suggestions? Two pickups would be ideal.

Wait dude, why would you want to buy a vintage bass (much more expensive, more brownie points) if you're looking for something you can beat on without worry?

Also, you're Kabir's new bassist right? (I'm a friend of his, Eugene, we used to play together and I know the rest of your bandmates)

Yeah, we talked on AIM last night.

I'm not looking for, like, a high-end vintage bass...more like a Univox or an old copy brand.

You guys, one of these is now mine:

1970s Univox Echo-Tech EM 200 delay unit.  It's like an old tape delay, but instead of reel, it uses a magnetic disk and a couple of tape heads.  It makes awesome noises.  It was sitting in my friend's basement for forever, and his dad thought it was broken so he let me take it off his hands for fifty bucks and it works fine.  It adds some noise to my signal (a kind of dull hiss and a clicking noise), but other than that it works fantastic.  It's got an option for a footswitch, but that is long gone, I think.  The power switch isn't a bypass, either.  Which kind of irks me, but whatever.  It sounds better than my DOD FX90.

Oh man, these Univox Rics are all kinds of sexy.

See, the thing about Eastwood is that their copies aren't really copies. Pretty much all of their designs are based off shitty but cool looking no-name brand guitars from the 60s. These original guitars are now expensive out the ass simply because they're vintage, but they're no less playable. Most Airlines and Teiscos were made out of some crappy polycarbonate plastic type material. Eastwood makes quality instruments that look like these old designs. Their quality, however, is comparable at the very least to MIJ Fender instruments.

Have you ever played a Univox 4003 bass? Is it as nice as it looks?

Well guys, I just took the plunge. Just moments ago, I bought a slightly used CIJ Jazzmaster off of eBay.

I know I was talking about how I'd much rather get a AVRI and everything before, but from what I've read the CIJ's are pretty nice and this one came with a whole bunch of modifications and extras; Lindy Fralin pickups, a buzzstop, a hardshell case, and the guy's local guitar tech modified the bridge just beforehand, all for a little over 900 bucks (free shipping, also). I'm fuckin' thrilled.

So, not the ES-335-type guitars?  'Cause that seems like you're cutting out a significant amount of options.  Particularly some good options.  Like Gretsch Electromatics and Epiphone Dots.

It's pretty excellent.  I'm probably going to make a true bypass switch for it, as I've been kickin' around on the BYOC forums, and I'm in the middle of building myself a Tonebender MKII clone.

Hey guys. I got my Acoustic Black Widow back from the shop. My rock is infinitely cooler now. Note: that isn't a pic of mine. But is more or less what it looks like. Mine has some serious ding dongs on the back of the neck but looks infinitely shinier and sexxy.
