Likewise, while we're on the topic of amps:

I'd like someone to recommend me an amp of 50+ watts that'll produce a lead tone that sounds-quite-distorted-but-really-isn't-that-much, if you know what I'm talking about. Think about the kind of hard rock tone used for bluesy leads that emphasises the mids and trebles. A tone that's not too smooth, but quite controlled.
The lead guitar tone of Angus Young is a good reference point.

That's pretty easy, get yourself a good old Marshall tube amp (stay the hell away from things like MGs) and crank it - or use an overdrive pedal if you don't want to deafen everybody in a mile radius. Angus Young used mainly JTM series amps, if I remember right.

[EDIT - I think he also used JMPs sometimes.]

Since I've only been playing for about two months I have no idea about most of what you guys are talking about, but I have been thinking about switching out the pickups. Any suggestions?

Suggestion: give them to me, holy shit I would love to stick them in my battered old Squier Bullet. It'd take a little bit of routing (LOL, "BIT"), but it'd be SO WORTH IT.

EDIT for repost of a picture I posted in the Pedal thread:

While I'm willing to spend a fair bit of money, I do want to keep this reasonable. Marshall amps are quite pricey.

In AUD, I'm looking at $2000, absolute tops, although something below that would be preferred.

Consider that $1300-1500 USD, tops.

That's a nice fuckin' guitar.

No wonder you're unhappy though, P90s aren't exactly starter pickups. They're somewhat of an acquired taste.

I think guitarfetish.com has Strat pickguards routed for p-90s, actually. Plus, as I'm sure you know, the Bullets are pool-routed.

(those Teles are pretty nice, IMO. My friend used one as his main axe on stage until he got the J5 Triple Deluxe)

Dude the poor guy has been playing for two months. I doubt he knows how to adjust his action, much less fuck with the pick-up wiring. Quit eye-raping his P-90s.

As much as I like those (I'm actually thinking of picking one of these up to beat up on) let him keep his first guitar in one piece until he at least learns what to do with it. Over-complicating shit when you're first learning to play is the best way to burn out.

Yeah no deal, I'm going to stick with the P90s. Probably going to take it slow and just learn to hear the differences. It's not that I don't like the sound it's just that I couldn't hear much of a difference between the two pickups, which will eventually change.

And you're right about not knowing how to adjust my action. But I'm really good at wiring, unless it's overly complicated.

MadassAlex, get either an Orange Tiny Terror/PPC212 half-stack or a Rocker 30.

Orange is pretty much that same vintage British rock 'n' roll tone that Marshall amps have but heaps better.

I string her with 10s and I really like the way she sounds that way. Lots of people like to put ridiculously heavy strings on theirs but I like playing jangly shit anyway.

Yes.  I would love to upgrade to the Blues Deville.

Then again, the only difference appears to be the speakers.  Both amps have the same preamp and power tubes.  Man, now I'm lookin' at some Eminence Legends.

Or, These are pretty cheap and sound fantastic, according to this Gearwire walkthrough.

I have one of these, It is LOUD, Little noisy too.
Sounds pretty good, Clean channel really shines.
Crunch channel falls flat IMO, Dial back the bass, Turn off the boost switch & put an OD out front & it wakes up tho.

Yeah, he mentions the bum distortion channel.  Basically, the only amps you should ever buy for the distortion channels are Marshall, Mesa, and Orange amps.  Unless you want to get into vintage stuff you can't find now like Matchless and Sovtek amps.

I've got a Music Man Sixty-Five 210, which is, interestingly enough, 65W thru 2 10" speakers.  The speakers were replaced before I got it, since it's so damn loud.  It's got 1 12AX7 in an otherwise solid preamp, and power section is 2 6L6's.  It's basically Music Man's mid-70's Twin Reverb, but it's dirtier than Fenders tend to be.  Plus, <3 Vibrato and 2-spring verb tank.

Good god how I would love to have that thing. Shame I have no money anymore 'cause of those bastards at Scandinavian Airlines...

The Tiny Terror has a gain channel, doesn't it?  Also, I'm pretty sure the AD series amps do.

Oh, as in, oh. I've always thought of gain channels on all-tube amps as essentially the same thing as extra overdrive pedals. Distortion channel, in my head, is the simulated digital distortion that solid-state Marshalls and VOXes and shit have.

The Deluxe Reverb is more of a classic clean tone.  From what I've heard it is very warm and punchy.  It's primarily a clean amp, but I've been told it sounds pretty good with a dirt box or two in front of it.

The vibrato is pretty subtle as far as I can tell.

Well thing is, you see, I'm looking for a primarily clean amp. Something I can play my mopey indie rock with. That's not to say that I don't want to run a few pedals through it, though, I completely and totally intend on it.

However, I'm thinking the Blues Deluxe may be the better one to go with. It's cheaper, has more wattage, and from what I can hear you can pull off some pretty fantastic clean tones with it, as well. At least, that's what I hear.

If we're talking about Hot Rods, he could lay down an extra fifty bucks for ten more watts and four ten-inch speakers with some nice, bassy punch.  What I mean to say is, for a little more he could get the Hot Rod Deville.

I am seriously considering putting some Eminence Legend speakers in mine to make it into essentially a Blues Deville dressed in black tolex.

Nope, the 2x12 Hot Rod is ALSO a DeVille. 1x12 is Deluxe.

Well thing is, you see, I'm looking for a primarily clean amp. Something I can play my mopey indie rock with. That's not to say that I don't want to run a few pedals through it, though, I completely and totally intend on it.

Is there any way you can try both of them out? It's really up to you to decide if the difference in sound is worth the extra cash. Also in that price range are the Laney VC30, Traynor YCY40, Peavey Classic 30 (I think?) these are all also great amps for that money. IMO I don't think most people ever need 60W of headroom for their purposes, unless you wanna play super clean. 30-40 watts is plenty loud for stage volume and most big venues will mic up your amps anyway.

Is the reverb on the Hot Rod Deluxe much better than on the Blues Jr.? My Blues Jr. verb sounds assy.

What about Peavey? Randall?

From Peavey check out the 5150/6505.
The JSX & XXX are cool too, The Windsor is Effing awesome.
Their classic series is pretty bad ass too.
Their old stuff, Tho ugly, Is built like a TANK & made in the USA.
I'm still rocking my Bass Mark IV from 1982, It's been through a lot but it still fires up & sounds great.

I don't know anything about Randall.

I just got an email from Gibson, announcing the launch of "Dark Fire" on December 15th. It did not at all go into detail, but I can only assume it's going to be yet another round of robotic tuning some modeling bullshit that everyone else has already done (eg. Fender and Line 6).

Quote from: Gibson
The Gibson Dark Fire has arrived.

And man, oh man, it changes everything.

Never before has a guitarist had the ability to recreate any guitar sound ever made with one click.

Never before has a guitar provided infinite tonal possibilities.

Never before has cutting-edge technology been so accessible.

This is the evolution of sound.
