I own an Epiphone, and I've played Gibsons. I think I just prefer cheaper guitars, and then modding them. My friend's got a G-400 with Gibson '57s and a Gibson SG Standard. The G-400 honestly blows the Standard out of the water.

I know we do not always agree on aesthetics, but unless the other alternative is sherwood green metallic, Gene is pretty much unarguably correct.

Lol, as soon as I wrote that I knew I should have specified.  Specifically, this one:http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-Vintage-Hot-Rod-52-Telecaster-?sku=512138

It's way too much money for me to spend but I love that mini humbucker.  Throw a bigsby on it and I will gladly give you a kidney.

p.s. Um, how do I link it under specific text so I can forgo the whole showing the entire address thing?

Quick fix:
-Squier Affinity Tele in blonde
-Guitar Fetish mini-hum Tele pickguard
-GFS mini-hum
-other mods as seen fit.

GFS/Guitar Fetish is generally cheap, but god quality.

Man that Am. Vintage Tele is hot shit.

I should clarify, I meant there is no other acceptable finish for the '52 Hot Rod or any other similar super old school Tele. There are plenty of gorgeous Teles in plenty of colors, above one not the least of them.

Hey guys so, I have a Martin. My ex-girlfriend bought it for me last year on my birthday.

Yeah, making a parts Tele would probably my best bet:

  • Arctic White Squier
  • fat neck from Warmoth
  • GFS mini-hum w/ black pickguard
  • hotter bridge pickup

of course, if I wanted to do this myself I would first need to know:

  • how to use a soldering iron

Super old school.  GOD I love vintage guitars.

Alright gents, after the success with my last CBG, I've decided to make another Cigar Box Guitar, only this one will actually have something of a budget!

I'm making it out of a relatively small cedar cigar box (literaly, it's a small rectangle that I think is just long enough to keep scale) that I'm going to fill with Maple.  Despite being a CBG, it's going to have quite a bit of tonal possibilities this time.  It's going to have a telecaster style bridge with a slanted bridge pickup and a Firebird-esque mini-humbucker at the neck.  As for electronics, it's gonna have a 3 way pickup selector switch, 2 tone knobs, and one volume, but the tone knob for the neck pickup will be a push/pull so I can change the mini-bucker from parallel to series.  I'm gonna get a maple neck with rosewood fretboard, but I'm probably going to stain it like I did with the last one.

At least, that's the plan anyway.  The parts I need I can get from the previously mentioned Guitarfetish.com for about $200.  I'd like to hear some suggestions for this build before I order the parts though.

I think cigar box guitars are ugly as sin. But hey, you're the one playing it. And the MH-S combo seems to work really well (see that Vintage Hot Rod Tele).

Guys. I played a rock and/or roll show last night in a venerable punk rock club.
Two other great bands came from out of town.
We were the rockstar headliners.
Nobody came so I had tequila. This made me break out the ACOUSTIC BLACK WIDOW. Because in a tequila fueled bout of angry rock it is best to have a very substantive guitar to pound the f*ck out of.

My point? ACOUSTIC BLACK WIDOW!

(self-congratulatorynessitude on guitar awesomeness)

Anyway there ought to eventually be some pics of my actually WIDOW rocking. It usually takes a while for our drummer to get them posted.

Loud bass half stacks. Whats good while still relatively inexpensive? (I am willing to drop dough though for good stuff though.)

I'm not really sure yet. I think I could get like, 500-550 dollars for my current amp and I have a good chunk in the bank, so maybe like, 800-900. I'm also gonna buy used if I can, since that'll save me monies.

Not sure of the price range on this but Nemesis (by Eden) is very good for budget bass stuff.  Eden makes fantastic stuff, but it's really expensive.  Nemesis is their budget brand, and it's nearly as good for less cash.

Eden amps have actually been having some troubles since they changed hands. I was looking into buying one of their heads but went with Genz Benz instead. I can't remember the specifics but some of the new models especially (like the WT800 I think?) have had lots of technical difficulties and poor customer support. Eden amps do sound fantastic though.

Actually, now that you reminded me, I do remember hearing that.  However, all my experiences with Eden stuff have been positive.  My close friend and I frequently share our equipment, and he played an Eden Metro for a while.  He now uses a Eden 4x10 cab with a Tech 21 Sansamp and a bizarre old power amp.  Both sound (or sounded) great.

So guys

Guitarists who play through bass amps: Crap or Not Crap?

I think it's a cool concept and one of the guitarists in one of my favorite local bands plays through an Ampeg bass head into a Marshall cabinet, but what exactly is the benefit of doing this, other than I think it looks/potentially sounds cool?

Dear Guitar Thread,

I played a Fender 57' Strat reissue today. My friend/bandmate is thinking about buying it (he has a PRS he is selling so that is how he can afford it. Don't ask me how he afforded a PRS. Don't ask me why he wanted a PRS. Actually anyone wanna blow a shitload of money? No? It's cool, I understand.) It is the most amazing thing I have ever heard. Ever. Like holy shit.

Heh, but DO NOT get a Fender BANTAM bass amp.

I had one of these gems taking up  space in my basement land of misfit amps. It weighed slightly less than a small subaru and had about all of 30w of spotty, crappy bass sound. And apparently they came stock with styrofoam coned speakers.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Bantam_Bass

The one I had someone had replaced the speaker with a 1970 Vega systems 15" that seemed ok. But the tubes would sometimes fall out of the back of the thing while you played.   :x

This turd has CBS "quality" written all over it.

A questions for the experts:

My sustain is fine when I'm playing alone, but when the bassist, drummer, and other gutiarist are playing as well, I get little to no sustain. Is it a matter of just upping my volume when I'm playing held notes, or should I get my bassist to turn down his volume (he plays excessively loud)?

Thanks

Do you mean that you can't hear your sustain? In that case you've already suggested two solutions. If your problem is because you have a really thin tone (low wattage at high volumes) and it therefore can't be heard too well in a band situation, then you'll need to get the rest of the band to quiten down.

So guys, while I was walking around The Happiest Place On Earth on Sunday, lo and behold on a corner I saw a completely unsupervized Fender red-knob The Twin. Totally just sitting there. No one looking at it, no one keeping watch over it.

I should've jacked it, but I think park security would've noticed me carrying around a huge amplifier that I didn't walk in with.

Anyone ever seen/heard of/played these old Vox Phantom models?

They never really looked too appealing to me, but I recently stumbled upon this site (http://www.phantomguitars.com/), and...I dunno, for some reason I really want one now. Maybe it's because I've been listening to Joy Division lately (Ian Curtis used one). For only like, seven-hundred bucks, too.

Well, in one song during Joy Division gigs.

Apparently the Phantom Guitarworks recreations are pretty great, though. At least based on Harmony Central reviews, anyway. I don't really find them that hideous; they're not exactly gorgeous, but I dunno, I think they look cool.

Perhaps the next time I come across seven-hundred bucks I'll know what to do with it.
