PS3 Price Drop All But Confirmed
« on: 05 Jul 2007, 18:38 »

It's all over the Internet so I'm not going to bother linking, but basically a ton of retailers are slipping in $500 PS3 sales into their Sunday newspaper ads for the week following E3, making it nearly certain that Sony's going to announce a price drop at the show.

I'm personally not surprised, because the PS3 is getting its ass handed to it right now. Hell, at one point the GBA was outselling it in North America. However, what do you all think about this? Are you more likely to get one now? If all of Sony's first-party holiday slate turns out to be great (which quite frankly, I'm not expecting), then that along with the lower price might just persuade me to get one. It would be much earlier than I expected to get one, at least.

Cory you are a fool. A silly, silly fool.

Especially since that game will probably go multiplatform anyway.

probably not since there aren't any games that I really want to get, and do they do not even have a controller that rumbles, instead opting for a wii ripoff tilt function.

I don't have the money to get it right now, nor are there any games that interest me coming out until at least 2008.  I will wait for a permanent price drop.

I would love to see their financial report after dropping the price and losing more than the $300 they already are losing on every console sale.

Of course I could be wrong and they may be dropping it to a point that they are losing almost the same amount. Either way it's going to be a horrific amount.

All I care about concerning this is that it'll likely cause Microsoft to cut the price on the 360. With the Wii so much cheaper and the PS3 now within $100 and technologically superior, I figure Microsoft will have little choice but to drop it if they want to continue to compete. I've been wanting a 360 for months now, but refuse to spend $400 on a video game console.

I refuse to spend more than $300 on a video game console, so Sony still has a long way to go to get my money. They could pack in a human clone of Thora Birch to do what I wish with, and I still wouldn't pay $500 for it.

I agree. If the ps3 was $300 I'd think about it. I'd still have major reservations but I would consider it at least. I'm not an enormous console fan. PC games have always been better in my opinion. I do own a ps2 though and do enjoy it. If I'm buying a next gen console it would be a wii or 360 at this point, especially since so many games are coming out on both 360 and ps3. I was excited for Assassins Creed but that's headed to 360 and PC also. GTA IV is also surely heading to 360. Same with Fallout 3. And so many others. PS3 has nothing going for it right now.

Man, if you fools are going to cough up 500 to play Final Fantasy you deserve to be suckered by Sony. I mean, I like Final Fantasy and all, but it doesn't sell a 500 dollar system.

Besides, FFXIII is holiday 2008 now. Plenty of time for them to announce the 360 version.

Ummm....

I could have swore I read somewhere that Square-Enix has decided 100% that XIII and XIII Versus will be Sony exclusive titles?

Could be wrong, could have dreamed it. Anyone else with info on this?

Since FFXIII is so far away and SquareEnix can change their minds at any point in the mean time, I wouldn't take a god damn thing they say seriously. It's fun to go back and compare what kind of things they were saying/showing about FFX and FFXII and how they actually ended up.

I agree that you're an idiot if you buy a system for only one game. I realize there are likely to be other games you'll want for PS3 when FFXIII comes out, but if all of those games aren't exclusive to the PS3, why bother??

The thing is, making them Sony-exclusive makes no real sense for a business standpoint for Square Enix. I mean, nobody is really buying the PS3 in any territory except Europe (which is by far the smallest of the Big Three gaming regions anyway), and people in North America own dramatically more 360s at this point, which is just as big a fanbase for Final Fantasy as Japan, if not more so because there are just so many more people in America and Canada than Japan. Unless Sony finally got their game together and unloaded a really, really big check for Square Enix to keep it exclusive, there's really no reason for them to not make a 360 version. The only reason I think that FFXIII is less likely than MGS4 to go multiplatform is because Konami has already made MGS games for non-Sony platforms (Twin Snakes on Gamecube and Subsistence on the original Xbox). Neither of those series is really a huge deal to me individually. I've never played a Metal Gear game, and although FFXIII looks pretty neat, if it's just the same Final Fantasy gameplay I'm not overwhelmingly interested, especially if I'd have to buy a whole new system for it. If Heavenly Sword, Rachet and Clank, and Uncharted all turn out to be as awesome as the hype machine is spinning them as, then I'll be much more interested in the prospect of buying a PS3.

OK, Sony's confirmed the price drop, but something we didn't know before was that they are dropping the price because they're bringing out an 80 gig model bundled with Motorstorm at the old 60 gig model's 600 dollar price point. Personally, as somebody who isn't really interested in Motorstorm and since the only difference between the two models is 20 gigs of hard drive space, I would buy the cheaper model anyway.

Here's something I want to know. How did we end up in an era where consoles want to be computers?? If you have more than one version of your console and they cost differently, AND people have to download patches/firmware updates for the fucking things, you have failed!! This is exactly why I don't want a 360 or PS3. I just want to plug in a game and have fun.

Those are the reasons (along with software support and the much, much lower rate of piracy) that console gaming is pummeling PC gaming into the dirt, at least. Why Sony thought to go against these principles is just another mystery.

That's the feeling of the majority of consumers, hence why the Wii is currently on its way to running away with the console market for this generation.

I love this article from 2003.

Quote
Now Sony and Microsoft are expanding the scope of the entire videogame business, morphing their consoles into all-in-one home entertainment devices in their battle to dominate the long-trumpeted but slow-to-arrive world of PC/TV convergence. Nintendo, meanwhile, is still a game company--and only a game company. Which is precisely the problem, according to most people in the industry. "The battle is over entertainment. Period," declares Jack Tretton, executive vice president at Sony Computer Entertainment America. "If you don't have that vision, you are forever going to be a niche player."

It's possible that convergence could backfire and create an opportunity for Nintendo. Consumers could get turned off by rising console prices as Sony and Microsoft pack more functions into their boxes. Or consumers might not really want an all-in-one entertainment machine. "Name all the hybrid consumer-electronics devices that have been successful," notes Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush Morgan Securities. "There's just one: the clock radio."

But that's a minority view. Most in the videogame industry agree that Sony and Microsoft are on the right track. "I'm not sure there's room for a stand-alone game machine," says Brian Farrell, CEO and president of THQ, the independent publishing giant responsible for such hits as SpongeBob SquarePants and WWE Wrestling. Jeff Lapin, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, which created the blockbuster Grand Theft Auto franchise, agrees. "I think Nintendo is going to have to redefine its hardware if it wants to compete," he says. "The simple fact is that people are looking for extra features."

To be honest, I wish my wii played DVDs. We couldn't watch a DVD anywhere except the basement since it was late at night, and our DVD player is a bit messed up (it lacks a controller and is very old). It was a mess of connecting and unconnecting wires; I was like "man, the wii slot is the right size, why can't I just put it in?!"

There is a software update coming for the Wii for DVD playback, but really, who cares? I have like, 30 DVD players in my house in one form or another. Soon toasters will play DVDs.

DVD drivers are just one more thing that can wear down the laser. I've got three DVD playing devices in my living room already and will be getting a 360 by summer's end so I can play Resident Evil 5 eventually. I buy a video game console to play video games, no make me breakfast.

Oh, isn't that nice?  Sony are confirming that the PS3 will not be getting a price cut in Europe.
Well, I guess I'll go buy an inferior version of the console for what works out as more than $800.  Or I could not.

You know, I think I'll do that last one.

Bonus news!

Sony is going to discontinue production on the 60GB model. So that $100 price cut?

Means nothing in a month! You'll have to pay $600 again for the added bonus of 20GB!

I think Nintendo secretly bought Sony and is intentionally running the company into the ground.

Source on this? Everything I've heard says that the 60 and 80 GB versions will be available concurrently once the 80 debuts in September. I've heard nothing of them discontinuing the former.

I'm not entirely sure why they would do that. And why would the person in charge of Sony Europe talk about what they're doing in North America. So I'm not 100% sure this is true. If it is, I will probably send Sony headquarters a picture of my middle finger, because with that price drop and a strong holiday showing, I probably would have coughed up for a PS3. If they go back and charge that 100 dollars for an extra 20 gigs of hard drive space and a game I don't give a shit about, then I'm gonna be pretty pissed.

My wallet will be happy. Or happier, at least. There are a lot of good games this holiday season.

The official word from SCEA now is that they have no clue what SCEE is talking about.

So, either SCEE is talking out of their ass for now good reason or SCEA did not want this public knowledge.

It seems like a metter of one hand doesn't know what the other's doing.

Turns out the right hand is fingerbanging themself while the left is furiously masturbating to pictures of Marmaduke.

Unfortunately, neither hand is making good video game hardware.

At this point, we have Kaz Hirai and David Reeves, presidents of SCEI and SCEE respectively, saying that production on the 60GB model has ceased and SCEA denying anything about any such thing.

I think Kaz might know better than anyone, though, and if he says it (he's on video saying it, without any mincing of words)- it's true.

So, effectively, they're doing what they did with the 20GB model. Phase out the $500 model as fast as possible and maybe people won't notice that they can now only buy the $600 model. The $500 version must just be sold out everywhere!

Resistance: Fall of Man is about the only really good exclusive title available right now. For a 600 dollar machine. To be fair, the PS3 lineup for this holiday (Heavenly Sword, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Folklore, Rachet and Clank Future, and Lair are the ones I'm interested in) does look very strong. The fact of the matter is, if they hadn't rolled back this price cut, and the holiday slate turned out as good as it's looking, I probably would have bought a PS3. But now that it's back to 600 dollars and the only extra they've added is another 20 gigs of hard drive space and a pack-in game I don't want, I'm probably not buying one unless the 60 GB model is still available after all these games come out, which sounds very unlikely.

Well, maybe. I haven't played it. That's the only one anybody really cares about, at least. Point being is, Sony's bringing games out now that they should have had when the damn thing launched. The 360's lineup is no slouch this holiday season, but Sony's bringing a bunch of titles to catch up, but you can't help but think that if some of these had been available LAST November, then the situation to this point would be much different.

Thanks for the link. I've gotta wonder, though: end of the month? Seriously? This from the same asshat who said "I'd give $1000 to anyone who can find a PS3 on the shelf right now (In January)."

Really?  Fuck, he owes me a couple grand.  My Local Wal-Mart has had the same one for 8 months now (I got bored, wrote down the serial number just to see how long it would take to sell, still there as of last night at 8:45pm local).  And there are a couple collecting dust at some nearby Gamestops and Hastings.

My local EB Games has a display of them. It's full.

They've all collected dust.

I played a lot of Resistance this last weekend.

It has neat weapons.

The premise is interesting.

It's still pretty bland.

That game is pretty much junk. Nothing special in the least. Of course I feel the same about Gears though. In fact, I feel that way about almost all console shooters. The ps3 has done nothing to change that. I doubt it will ever.
