Is Centrino any good?
Kana:
I bought myself a replacement to my old Sony VAIO last year for about $1800. Its a Toshiba Satellite and I have to say I have no gripes with it other than the crapware they are trying to stick with you at startup - which is easily removed.
Specs:
2.14 Intel Core 2 DuoCPU
1 Gb Ram (I am going to swap it with 2 2gb sticks when the next price drop comes)
8x Super DVD Writer
17" WXGA HD Widescreen (Res is like 1600x 1280 or something, I've forgotten)
120 GB 5400 (They sell 200gb 4200s for slight price increase, but 5400 is lowest RPM I'd go)
Bluetooth, Wifi, Firewire, Card Reader, tons of USB ports, etc etc
9 cell battery (I've ran my computer rendering Maya for 2 hours before it started getting pretty low, Movies and stuff 2-3 hours depending)
Vista Ultimate
My only gripe is I need to call Toshiba up as I just recently found out my Vista is 32 bit, which is crap since I ordered 64 bit. When I was comparing computers HP had a few that were eye catching, but the only serious competitor price-wise and system-wise were the MacBook Pros which I still freaking want. But the huge price difference for relatively same thing other than it being a Mac finally won out. Also, when comparing laptops made by Dell (lol) with same stuff the price was a joke. I was looking at a price of $2500+ at the time and when I called Dell to make a comparable custom machine the guy kept trying to sell me that XPS desktop replacer. I don't need a 20lb laptop with subwoofers, geezuz.

Good news, guys! My laptop budget just went up. I'm looking at maybe spending $1500-$1600 now!

Hi there. Then spend your leftover 100 buxx on this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145157
put those together and wham bam you should be set. (cept for vista sucking, but that's easily remedied by getting xp off a buddy or something.)
If it were me though, I'd hop my ass onto ebay, find myself a cheapass Macbook Pro that's up to snuff (2.4 core duo, 256 gddr3 video) and slap XP on that sexy bitch.

If you want a PC, I'd suggest waiting until the day after Thanksgiving if possible (yes I know it's the biggest shopping day of the year). The biggest deals occur then (online and in stores like Best Buy and Circuit City). Either that or go with a Macbook with XP on it like suggested (unless you can stand OS X). My wife has a Macbook and loves it -- she has both XP and OS-X on it (runs XP for casual activities // Runs OS-X for iPhoto/iMovie). Not a bad idea, although I personally like PCs.
If you're really not in a rush, wait for the Intel Metro Laptop. http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/may2007/tc20070523_272039.htm

i realize your limit might be that high, but it might be a better idea to make a list of options you need/want with reasons why. and then search around for different laptops with those features, and then you might have a lot more money to keep to spend on other things down the line.
This way, in 2 years you won't be wondering why you got a laptop with a GeForce 8800 graphics card when you don't do gaming or video editing, or whatever..
you know what i mean?
