Is Centrino any good?

<< < (3/7) > >>

TrekkieTechie:
No, most notebooks' drivers for it have a checkbox for enabling/disabling under 'Mouse' in Control Panel. Their main gripe is that they'll accidentally brush against it while typing and it'll highlight and overwrite what they were typing or start them typing in the middle of what they'd already typed...

It's happened to me once or twice, and I never use it, so I just disable it. The looks of rapture on my clients' faces when I mentioned that I knew how to shut it off was delicious. I've had people hate it, I've had people not really care one way or the other, but I've never had someone love it. *shrugs*

DavidGrohl:
Toshiba or HP make reliable and great laptops.  Toshiba for durability -- HP for looks.  Just an opinion.  I'd stay away from compaq (HP's lower line), Gateway (although they're getting better), and Dell (is now cutting costs and overcharging for their name).

MlKE:
i agree with staying away from compaq. I had a desktop a few years back, and I've never had anything cause more problems. And from what I hear online, I'm not the only one.

although, I don't know how Dell can overcharge for their name when they sell computers for 400 bucks.

I agree with Tommy - HP puts out quality laptops.

A quick trip to hpshopping.com netted me this:
HP dv6500t 15.4" Laptop

Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo processor T5450 (1.66 GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 667MHz FSB)
15.4" WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)
75% OFF upgrade to 2GB DDR2 (2 Dimm)!!
50% OFF!! 383MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS!!
HP Imprint Finish (Radiance) + Microphone

Total price before rebate and taxes: $1,212.99. That's pretty damn good. If the laptop were for me, I'd upgrade the processor to the 2.0GHz, upgrade the wireless to ABGN w/ bluetooth, and add on a CD/DVD burning program.

The original poster isn't looking for a bottom of the line machine, but if he were -- the $400 Dell comes with the same quality parts as your troublesome Compaq.  Dell's middle to upper line is overpriced considering the parts they're giving you -- and I get more repair calls on the newer Dell models than I do and ever did on the older models.
