Leeching and Seeding etiquette..?
« on: 14 Sep 2007, 22:36 »

Just a quick Q... I'm pretty new to the whole torrent thing. My old computer was a pile of junk and way too slow to torrent, but the new iMac is a gem.

Anyway, I was wondering what is considered to be a polite share ratio to have for a file after you've downloaded and are seedin it for others? I guess it varies for different files, but is there a general sense for how long you should seed something after you download it?

At this point the smallest share ratio I have on a file I'm seeding is 1.55, and the highest is 60.74, but that's a file I've had going for a few weeks.

I generally seed until I get a 2.0 ratio. If you really want to basically host a torrent, you can seed as long as you want, but I consider it proper etiquette to just put more into the swarm than you took out.

Ah... yeah I kind of figured seeding things to a 60+ ratio was kind of excessive. A lot of my other torrents were seeded out to the 20s and such.

I'm going to take down anything that's at a 10+ ratio at this point, I figure.

I think anything higher than 1.0 is fine.  It means you aren't in it only for yourself.

Now, when it comes to private trackers, I simply go as long as the torrent has demand, because that means if I download something no one else wanted, at least I gave back in other ways.

I feel as long as your OVERALL ratio is higher than 1:1 you are at least not taking more than you give.

I think trying to keep an overall ratio of about 2 is best.  Some trackers don't let you connect fully if you have lower, actually.

Also, if theres only a few seeds and a lot of leechers, keep seeding!

Anything above 1 is acceptable.

My overall ratio over on the ol' barnyard favorite is like 3.3 now or something.
