Not really on topic, but I thought that movie was vastly overrated.

But I might give the songs a proper listen now.

just-another-andy:
Muse are often refered to as sci-fi rock.

Listen to Space Dementia off their Origin of Symmetry album and you'll understand why.

It rocks  :-)

SilentJ:
He's not really rock by any stretch of the imagination, but every time I bring up John McLaughlin around my mom she calls to him a "space guitarist" and it's started to rub off on me.  I definitely dig it.

Jackie Blue:
Speaking of Hawkwind:

It's really hard to get a hold of, but if you can, Nik Turner's live 1995 re-imagining of Space Ritual, featuring Genesis P-Orridge on one track, is insanely good.

The Viz:
Rush's album 2112 is a really good space rock album, blends in quite  a bit of progressive rock in there as well.  If you haven't listened to it yet, you should.  Early Pink Floyd is cool too (though I far prefer their material from 71-79), their songs "Interstellar Overdrive" and "Astronomy Domine" are pretty much the best examples of space rock there are.
