ATP 2008
« on: 26 Nov 2007, 08:29 »

really awesome but ridiculously expensive?

if price/awesomeness ratio is anything to go by then this should be awesome

but the price is really high, and for that reason I would not be able to go.

but the line up is kind of really cool.

I'd love to go, but I really don't think I can afford it. Bollocks.

Holy hell, this is one of the best lineups I've seen a quite a while. And it's not complete. If it wasn't almost $300 (fuck you U.S. dollar) and across the ocean I might have had a chance it go.

I went to the Shellac-curated ATP back in 2002. It was the best thing that ever happened.

I recommend anyone in the UK to go at least once in their life. Sadly, there will never be another one as good as 2002.

It was good but the one curated by the Chapman brothers was excellent as well and that had Mike Watt and George Hurley performing the Minutemen Duet, which is as close as I'll ever come to seeing my favourite band play.

I'm really very underwhelmed by the line-up for the EITS ATP. The Paper Chase and Ghostface are the only really exciting people they have lined up and the rest all seem rather uninspired choices. On the other hand, this is in less than two weeks:

They've just announced the times. No serious clashes, Aphex Twin is playing two sets (so are Portishead but you can only see one) and GZA is doing the Liquid Swords set. I'm more than a little excited.

Are you crazy?? A Hawk and a Hacksaw are killer, Eluvium is one of the best solo acts you can see, Lazarus are great, BSS are great (and even better live). Can someone, in the meanwhile, please explain to me the appeal of The Paper Chase? I've listened to two of their albums and seen them live twice and every time I hear them I like them less and less. An awful singer with awful stage presence and awful lyrics backed up by annoyingly discordant instrumentals...I just don't get it.

I'm not too familiar with A Hawk And A Hacksaw, Lazarus or Eluvium, but the former are playing this ATP so I'll catch them soon enough anyway. Broken Social Scene and Explosions In The Sky are too drab for my tastes, Animal Collective and Four Tet are ok yet overrated but again the former are playing this time around, Iron And Wine I like but not an exciting choice and I didn't bother watching Dinosaur Jr last time they played ATP and I can't see a reason I would if I was at that one.

As for the merits of The Paper Chase; I really, really like his lyrics and discordant instruments are a good thing in my book.
