It is kind of hard to tell what is going on with the sunglasses holding your hair back like that but I think: really cool Hannah!

Oh hey guys, I took the scissors to my hair again!  Now it is all super short again!  I had three customers come up to me at work today to tell me how beautiful/amazing/wonderful my hair looked, so my hairdressing skills are probably not too terrible.

(I look like a corpse because I am horribly tired all the time. Excuse my corpse face kthnx)

Oh and PS. Han you are adorable.

Not sure if someone already mentioned anything about straightening hair, but:

Unstraightened.

Straightened.

Dilemna: I seem to have damaged my hair BADLY with the iron in some areas. Split ends in a few parts and just burned hair in others.

How can I restore it back to healthier condition? And, if I can't restore it back to softer stuff that isn't brittle or dry, how can I manage it? (ASIDE from getting it cut)

I've tried Smooth N Shine's 60-second Critical Repair, and aside from making my hair smell funky (and maybe improving the parts that weren't already damaged to shit), those dead ends didn't change. I tried Aussie's 3-minute miracle, and, it... helped a LITTLE.  Herbal Essence's moisturizing shampoo and conditioner actually made it DRYER, and thus, die quicker against the iron. Smooth N shine's polishing repair helped a little bit.

Anybody have any other suggestions?

i don't know if there's a lot you can do for your hair except grow it out and cut off those dead ends. investing in a good straightener would probably be a much better choice, as your hair really shouldn't be experiencing that much damage when you straighten it and it probably says a lot about the quality of the straightener you are using now. the one i use now was pricey but i've never had any hair problems as a result of using it. if anything people comment a lot on how soft and nice my hair is. it's also an excellent investment; mine's lasted over five years now and is still going strong.

I'm using a Conair one, actually - ceramic, and it cost 15 dollars.

I guess that explains it. I've heard that the more expensive ones are what you're supposed to use, actually - they have smoother, better ceramic and they also use some negative-ion technology.

Are you putting heat protecting stuff on your hair before you straighten in? That could help for future straightenings.

Yes, I'm using a V02 heat defense spray.

I plan to start using the bottle of Aussie's anti-humidity spray after that one finishes - it's like a really liquidy, fine gel, a holding-spray. One thing I tried was, after the spray stiffened, I straightened. It's like you're sculpting hair rather than straightening, almost - I straightened one fold and it was like hair that was completely flattened after the gel dried. It was amazing.

yeah i paid about $150 CAD for mine. seems sort of silly expensive but again, this was about five years ago and it works just as good as the day i bought it, plus it doesn't damage my hair very much at all and does a pretty wicked job in general. if you plan on straightening your hair often (and it does suit you), it's an investment worth considering.

Yeah ditto on a flash straightener - I hassled my hairdresser about the difference there, apparently it's that it's all ceramic not ceramic plates over whatever metal they use, plus it's one plate rather than multiple like cheap ones so it's heated evenly. Basically heats much hotter, faster, and more evenly so you shouldn't have to piss about with your hair as long.

Possibly spend some ridiculous amount of money on a "masque" from Kerastase or something, and hell if you buy a GHD you get their flash heat defence crap with it. I have some (my hair has been dyed to fuck) and it's stupidly expensive but lasts forever because you don't use very much and it definitely helps.

All that said I don't do shit to my hair, am trying to talk myself into straightening it as it looks much nicer but I'm soo lazy when it comes to grooming. Your hair looks awesome straightened though!  :-D

Oh! And since I'm here and there are some people here with purple hair and stuff... I have always wanted fire-engine red hair. Since I was like 12, I wanted it. But because I'm lazy and cheap and the few times I ventured to a hair dresser they sort of ignored me and did it boring reds (lol, I had no idea how to ask for it) it has not been a happening thing!

Basically about 6 months ago I did this:

And you can sort of see it there - it was the first night, the glowing pinkish-red bit at the top is lovely previously undyed hair and the darker red is hair that had to be stripped. Well within days the darker bit had gone brownish red.

This is my hair now:

Like, right now. Yeah I look weird but you can see the lines of dye in my hair. I cut a bunch off because it was so screwed from bleaching. Basically the bottom's all washed out from being bleached and dyed over a bunch, the middle is dyed and unbleached, the top is untouched hair (oh god it's hard to leave it alone!)

Is it actually possible to get all of my hair a uniform red?! Failing lovely ridiculously unnatural reds, even just an intense permanent colour that's as unnatural as I can get it without having to use Fudge all over and reapply to my (extremely thick) hair every 2 weeks?

Please help, suggestions would be muuuch appreciated!

you may have to bleach your hair multiple times to get it light enough to dye bright red, as it won't be light enough the first time. the only way i could get my hair colour to last when i used to have dyed hair (very similar to your first picture actually, although that one is not very accurate cos i hadn't bleached or dyed it for a few weeks) was by leaving the dye in extra long and washing my hair as little as possible. the downside, though, is that you end up with sorta dirty hair all the time.

Guys I am bored. My hair is finally back to a normal, masculine length and color. No more blonde tips, no more atrocious long hair that did nothing for my face. Except now I am bored and I feel like I look too conventional. I keep trying to achieve a stylish "bedhead" look but it does not go well. I've used Biosilk a few times (I can't stand any heavy, goopy hair products and Biosilk is the only thing that is light enough not to make me feel like someone shat on my head) but I have no clue how to style it so I end up making a mess and washing it all out. I generally wash it, don't condition it, towel it until it's half-wet to moist, and let the rest air dry (as opposed to when I had long hair- I washed it, conditioned it, and meticulously blow-dried it only to have it be frizzy and shit anyway). During the air-drying process I shake it out a couple of times and it settles like in this picture.

I basically have not been happy with my hair ever since I was old enough to care about what it looked like. Suggest anything at all, radical or not. I'm of half a mind to turn it into a mohawk (floppy, not spiked up, such as this one). Though I am a pussy and in the end looking for something fashionable and handsome but not too conservative.

Tania: Ah, the awesome faded-pink hair! I have considered dying the crap out of it at home and having a professional finish it off (I can torture it myself for very little without paying for the hairdresser's time) but I'm just worried I'll still end up with lines of colour, just less obvious. Thoughts?

I am probably going to go talk to a different hairdresser that actually specialises in "alternative" hair rather than my slightly-horrified-by-my-taste hairdresser at some point, but I trust real people more. Possibly mistake when talking on the internet.

My natural hair colour is a very very dark brown.  I used to have a head of entirely pink hair (remember that guys?) and I would bleach it once a month and re-dye it every two weeks.  I think if you want very bright hair colour you kind of have to stick with the upkeep or it isn't going to stay bright.  I don't know why someone doesn't invent permanent bright awesome colours, they would make a fortune.

But to achieve this shiny pink (even with very dark hair to begin with) I only bleached it once and left the dye in for the normal amount of time. But then again, my hair is very awesome and even after over a year of bleaching it every month and dying it constantly and straightening it when I had a fringe it is still soft and lovely and not broken.

Oh god guys, look at my hair.  Why didn't any of you tell me how silly I looked?  That was only a YEAR ago!

I think you suit the purple, definitely. My hair used to be ridiculously silky but I've dyed it and dyed it... don't mind bleaching it just want an even result. Your hair is fucking awesome, looking at hair like yours has made me feel I can do it! LOL

Jodie, do you use any sort of extra conditioner to keep your hair so soft?  I bleached my hair last night and it's not light enough yet so I have to do it again, but I don't want to totally ruin my head.

Nope Rachel, I just use normal colour stay conditioner (sunsilk currently, but it changes).  After I bleach it and shampoo out the bleach I do usually give it an extra good condition and leave it soak in a bit while I shower because I worry my hair will get sad.  I think my hair is just incredibly patient with me and my whims.

the way i condition my hair is, after shampooing, towel drying it as much as i can then putting in a generous amount of conditioner and letting it sit for about 10-15 minutes. after that i rinse it out in cold water, which makes your hair incredibly shiny. when my hair was longer and dyed, i did this every time i washed my hair. now my hair is too short for frequent conditioning and also no longer dyed so i try to do this about once a week instead. it keeps it looking alright.

Personally, I think you'd look nice with that longish surfer look. Have you tried it?
As to product, you may want to give mousse a shot. If you use the right stuff, it just gives your hair body. Gel is disgusting and makes your hair goopy or crusty. Not cute. Give mousse a shot. Pantene's Ice Shine smells nice and will make your hair a bit shinier on top of giving it a bit of a wave.

Gene, get your sides and back trimmed a little and mess up the top (mousse is a good suggestion, but you could probably do it without it) to get a better bedhead look. It might help if it was feathered too, but I'm not sure.

Longish surfer look? Pics please?

Dan, every time I go shorter it just looks awkward. I prefer shaggy to short. This is my favorite picture of my current self.

Also, should I start conditioning again? When the above picture was taken, I washed, conditioned and blow-dried it every day. Now I just shampoo and towel/air-dry and it seems to look worse.

Also, what is feathered?

I can't help but lol @ how serious this guy is, but that's the hairstyle I'm talking about. The way your hair looks now, it makes your forehead look a bit high. The bangs sweeping over it would remedy this.
You'll get the longish feel you like, and it will look a bit more polished. You may have to grow your hair out a bit more so that your stylist has something to work with, to give you the texture and shaping you need.

Also, feathering began with Farrah Fawcett.

The flipped out edges are what the previous poster were referring to.

Bleugh, beards.
I can't understand why males between the ages of fifteen and twenty-two or so are so enamored with facial hair. As a female, I find it revolting and wouldn't even consider a second glance at someone who looks like a homeless person.

I've been a hair bum all my life, cutting it whenever it became unbearably hideous or in my way but never caring much about it.
So in the truest form of noobness I come before you, Hair Thread Experts, and ask -

what to do?

That's me with pretty short hair.

That's sort of longer hair when I don't do anything with/to it.

That's around the same length as before but with primping and combing involved.

And this is what it looks like now.

Now I'm open to any and all suggestions. Cut yes/no and how? Dye/color what and how?
I'm a blank slate to this. Haven't been to a hairdresser in more than 10 years. If I want to get rid of hair, I do it the old-fashioned way and rub it between rocks or against a tree trunk.
Please help me.

evernew i like the first picture best! maybe it would look even better if it was a bit longer in the front or something? you are a pretty good looking dude no matter what but short hair makes it a lot more noticeable.

Man what is with people hating on beards? I would say that yours could use a trim, Sam, but ain't nothing wrong with it. You do not look homeless, because your hair is not a matty rat's nest, and you don't have things living in your beard. I say that you are fine.

My boyfriend has a goatee thing that I would not approve of if it were not necessary to keep him from actually looking like he was 13. It is the only beardy-type thing he can grow, see, and I am kind of sad for him because goatees are unfortunate but if he shaved it off I would feel like I was a paedophile, so I guess it is a necessary evil.

(I like beards.)

Hey everyone, I need to buy some new bookshelves. When I get back from Ikea and put them together you're all invited to the bookshelf launch party.

Also, feathering began with Farrah Fawcett.
The flipped out edges are what the previous poster were referring to.

Check me out using all the wrong words. Feathered was not what I meant at all.

Also, should I start conditioning again? When the above picture was taken, I washed, conditioned and blow-dried it every day. Now I just shampoo and towel/air-dry and it seems to look worse.

I don't know about blow-drying but you shouldn't condition that much, a couple of times a week is best, usually. How quickly does your hair get noticeable greasy if you don't shampoo or condition it?

Just go to a good hairdressers (a unisex salon would be better if you currently go to a barber) and ask them to make it shaggy, not much shorter, and whatever else you want. You'll probably be pleasantly surprised at how much you like it.

I found what I was trying to describe earlier. I still think you would rock this look, and I'm seriously tempted to get it myself.

I like facial hair. It's only the itchy stubble that I don't, because it makes kisses uncomfortable. Soft stubble is good, though!
