Nix on the mohawk, that's way too much upkeep.

I always go in with a vague idea of what I want, because I go to a student place, and students freak out if they have to decide everything.
The upside of it is that because my hair is so thick, the students usually buck and the instructors finish my cut to save time, and it's for $10 instead of the $80 they would usually charge. Of course, my first pixie took three hours, and I was late for work. But it was also probably the best cut I'd ever had.

You're also far more likely to get a fun cut if you go in with an idea, otherwise the hairdresser will be wary of shocking you. Nobody wants a sobbing client in their chair, and I think that's a reasonable worry. I know more than one girl who's cried in the chair when the cut ended up a couple inches shorter than they were expecting.

My mom is a hair stylist, and has been for 25 years. Most hairdressers hate when there is NO idea what you want. Have some general idea,"I'd like shorter, I'd like to keep the length but get a new style, I'd like another colour"

If you're going to a new hairdresser every month, no duh your going to get a shitty haircut, they don't live and see how your hair reacts. It's best to find someone with a nice cut, ask them who does it, and go to them a few times.

also, Kris is right, pictures are good. However. There is NOOOOOOOOOOTHING more annoying to a hairdresser when someone comes in with a VERY specific hair cut in mind, most people's hair will not do most things unless there is a load of upkeep to it. It's actually best to go to one good hairdresser for a while and then start asking them what they think. Example, I can't do reverse bobs without cowlickin' like fuck, I have had my hair really short like that and only because I insisted.

But, then again, I cut my own hair.

(PS Jens, you arbitrarily said you would recommend those things without knowing who! This is what Darryl is saying is bad. Shaving a head sounds fun but doesn't work for a lot of people etccccccc)

Me, for example.  I look pretty ridiculous with short hair.  I have a large head/forehead, and it just does not look good at all on me.  That reminds me, I haven't shown a picture with the actual beard yet.  Expect some later this week.

at least 6 months (likes say 8 haircuts)

I don't want to sound like a dick but... do people actually cut their hair that often? Seriously? I've been using the same lady exclusively for 2 years now and she's only given me 4 haircuts...

i only get my hair cut about twice a year but that is mainly cos i am perpetually broke and for the last couple of months it always looks pretty shapeless and silly. still, unless your hair fast grows like crazy i feel like once every 2-3 months should be enough for most people. mine grows pretty quickly and that's usually about how long it takes before i start to notice anything different. once a month or more seems pretty extreme.

I cut my own hair, and only about two or three times a year. Since it has to grow in little spirals, it doesn't gain much length even though it grows like crazy. Oh well.

Lets not split hairs here, the point I was making is an ongoing relationship with your hairdresser that gives them enough time to become familiar with your hair is pretty important.  For all you people who cut your own, well that means years of learning your hair so thanks for the input but without some relevant or anecdotal info contributing in other ways might be a little more helpful.

I like going to hair dressers who know my hair. First off, it's hard enough finding one who knows how to cut short hair on girls, one who knows how to prevent your cowlicks from standing straight up, and one who knows how your hair will grow out. I am really happy with the one I've got right now. I don't know what I'll do if she ever leaves. (Probably go to a barber.)

Also, I have to get my hair cut every month.5 - 2 months when I have short hair. It grows fast and quickly reaches a point where it stops doing what it's supposed to. When I had long hair, I'd get it done whenever I needed a trim or got sick of my hair. Actually, this is the longest I've had one style in ages.

It doesn't take years to learn to cut your own hair really Ryan. However it takes common sense and most people should just go out.

Also, to keep your hair the healthiest you should cut it every 3-6 weeks. The average person grows like a cm or so of hair a month(depends on length), so just a trim really, split ends are the worst.

I think he means that since it's your hair, you already know it better than anyone else, so you start off with a big advantage if you cut it yourself.

Considering how little of my own head I can actually see, other people probably know my hair better than me. Who knows, though.

Other people knows how it looks, but they don't know what you have to do to make it look that way, how long it takes, if it gets frizzy when it rains etc. You know your hair better than anyone else, that's just how it is.

Sorry to interrupt Hair Thread,

but it just occurred to me last night that I have had long-ish hair for my entire adult life- since I was 17, I'm now 22- and it's started to make me tempted to cut it just to see.

Thoughts? Y'all know what I look like.

Also the QC Forum dresses me and tells me what to listen to and it's worked out basically the best so far so fuck the haterz.

When you first cut it shorter a year or so back it looked really good, but I am curious to see how you would look with an even shorter cut. Besides,  it's hair! It grows back!

so I got some nice hair product at the salon. it's supposed to make my hair wavy and curly and not crazy frizzy everywhere. I tried it today after my shower but the instructions were like "put in hair and style as usual" but normally I just let my hair air dry to make it all curly. so I put it in and let my hair air dry and there was no difference except my hair was a little softer and limper.

what am I doing wrong? I'm pretty sure it's me, not the product...

I'm sure it takes more than one application to achieve the desired affect. Just keep using a small bit every time you wash your hair and see if anything happens in a week or two.

With a diffuser!!! (I usually purposefully try to make my hair not as fluffy so I always air dry with maybe some mousse and I get cute spirals, but if I'm going big ol curly lion hair I have to blow it try)

Yeah usually with those wavy-fiers and curl enhancers you would need to blow it dry. Lots of them are heat activated too. It's a bit silly really because usually if you have curly hair, blow drying is the absolute last thing you ever want to do. I'd probably recommend a shine spray rather than a curl enhancer, and work a tiny amount in with your hands once your hair is almost dry.

Also Dovey cut your hair cut it I want to see how it looks

Ally, try this next time-

Work the product in with your head flipped over, then follow the little comic instructions. You leave your hair up like that for as long as you can stand (it's kind of a pain to get most shirts on over the wrap), then let it down and have it air dry the rest of the way.

These are probably the best pictures of what my hair is like. It's a bit longer than this at the moment and sometimes it is less or more curly depending on what shampoo I use or if I condition it etc.

Should my hair be kept a this length/grown longer or would it suit being shorter? It's pretty unruly and I have no idea what sort of style if any would suit me.
